On 18 August the eastern embankment of the Kosi Riverin south-easten Nepal collapsed resulting in major flooding in Nepal and in Bihar in north-east India. Estimates are that 70,000 people are displaced and are in need of shelter and assistance. Nepal is also providing relief for more than 10,000 displaced people from Bihar who have crossed into Nepal seeking assistance. The humanitarian repsonse has been well managed and coordinated by the Government of Nepal at both the central and local level. UNICEF has requested US$1.8 million to provide shelter, safe water, sanitation facilities, hygiene kits, education and child protection.

There are currently 33,404 Early Childhood Development centres (ECDCs) in Nepal, open to children between 3-5 years of age, which aim to increase enrolment and retention of children in primary schools. This pilot project will provide training to visually impaired children in daily living skills and pre-Braille activities to encourage ECDCs to enrol them, something which is currently not happening. The Department for Education in Nepal is keen to take this approach, if successful, to scale as a part of an Education for All Children with Visual Impairment (EFAVI) campaign to meet targets of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The IRBM capacity strengthening will also take a multi-scale approach. o Historical background, Impact, outcomes up to now and their limits ICIMOD played an important role in Phase 1 of the project by providing technical support to the Community Based Flood Early Warning System (CBFEWS), as well as developing a framework for the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystem (WEFE) nexus in the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region. Additionally, ICIMOD contributed significantly to the gender discussion and promoted regional cooperation. CBFEWS is one of ICIMOD's most successful endeavors, having been piloted with ICIMOD's technical support in the Rangoon river in Mahakali. CBFEWS has since been scaled out to numerous locations in Nepal, India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, and has even been replicated in Malawi with ICIMOD's assistance. But, but in the context of South Asia the coverage of CBFEWS is minimal.
