CAFOD is supporting Caritas Switzerland in the reconstruction of schools destroyed or badly damaged in Sindupalchowk by the 2015 earthquake. This is the second phase of Cordaid's earthquake response activities in Lahrepauwa and Daibung VDCs, in Rasuwa District. Phase 2 focuses on broader recovery and the full use of the resilience methodology as a learning, planning and implementation tool. The objective is to build on existing capacities and strengthen resilience. Both phases built on Cordaid’s strategy that in disaster prone areas an integrated approach is needed to strengthen resilience in order to reduce risks and build response capacities of local communities and authorities for future disasters. The integrated strategy uses a multi- stakeholder approach involving affected communities, local and international civil society organizations, local and international authorities, private sector and research institutes. The approach focuses on hazard and local risk conditions, in this case the earthquake, landslides and its impact on the target communities. The resilience building process assumes that all men and women in the community are equally vulnerable to the hazard, what differentiates within the community are capacities to respond. The community identify their capacity gaps and priorities have been given to those sections of society where resilience is weakest and their ability to bounce back is restricted. The resilient community action plan will define longer term plans with priorities disaggregated to what can be funded by Cordaid and the rest are to be added in VDC/District plans and plans for other agencies on integrated approach. The key outputs for this project will be construction of permanent shelters and latrines, rehabilitation of water systems, livelihoods development, DRR and protection mainstreaming.

SADED Nepal promotes grassroots democracy and ecologically sustainable society, using mainly the methodology of dialogues. The dialogues on sustainable alternatives will be carried out in particular on the following themes: youth and migration, biodiversit y and farming, and sustainable rebuilding. The dialogues are facilitated on different levels. On a village level in Nuwakot, Rasuwa, Dhading, Sindhupalchowk, Dolakha, Dhankuta and Sankhuwakhabha districts the dialogues seek to be an impetus for a lasting e mpowering platform. On a district or regional level dialogues take place between villagers and policy makers (wanting to challenge the usual top down policy making process), whilst the dialogues in the centre, in Kathmandu will reach out to students and na tional policy and opinion makers. The dialogues are also continued at the Social Forum process and the dialogues will in total be feeding into a policy alternatives building process (forming national consortium for policy alternatives) between different ac tors besides SADED, as trade unions and various youth groups, which will meet at regular intervals around the main themes of the dialogues. The outcomes of the dialogues, the ideas around sustainable alternatives, will be published and disseminated in the interconnected dialogue processes via newsletters, newspaper items, SADED's website (http://sadednepal.org.np) a journal and books.

The IRMCs are responsible for planning and implementation of the IWRM activities at catchment levels with the technical and financial support from project office. The project will strengthen them further to enhance their capability to function as an independent institutions in the longer run. In addition the project will play an instrume ntal role of coordinating with the concerned and relevant agencies and organizations for the IRMCs to enable them to raise funds for sustainable functioning.The proposed project will directly benefit atleast 4000 HHs and 20000 individuals across the projec t intervention areas in Indrawati. Indigenous people (IPs) Marginalized Janajatis and disadvantaged groups primarily women will be project's prime focus. IRMCs Eco-clubs water smart communities Buffer zone user committees are the direct beneficiaries. Two earthquakes in April and May caused massive damage in central Nepal killing 8 856 people destroying 543 000 homes and affecting 5.6 million people. The Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS) launched an immediate relief effort with other 8 000 volunteers taking part. 29 Red Cross and Red Crescent directly supported the response as well as the IFRC and ICRC and in total the RCRC Movement has provided emergency shelter to over 500 000 people water and hygiene to over 500 000 and medical care to over 50 000. BRC launched an appeal for funds on the day of the earthquake and by 01/08/15 has raised 13.1million including a 4.1million from the DEC. Of this 5.9million has been committed to the emergency response efforts including: 1.4million of relief items sent from BRC stocks in Kuala Lumpur and Dubai including tarpaulins mosquito nets blankets and hygiene kits. 3.8million supporting IFRC emergency operations including shelter and cash distributions. Deployment of 11 delegates to be part of FACT the IFRC coordination unit overseeing the operation. Deployment of the Mass Sanitation Emergency Response Unit a four-person team that is providing safe drinking water clean toilets and hand washing facilities in Sindhupalchok the worst-affected district. As thousands struggle in the aftermath of this devastating earthquake we have launched the Nepal Earthquake Appeal.

The mountain communities of Nepal and across the Hindu Kush Himalaya region face specific challenges due to the remoteness from road networks, accelerated climate change, food scarcity and malnutrition, poor sanitation and health, low levels of literacy, with little opportunity to generate incomes and develop livelihoods beyond subsistence farming. These challenges are likely to be exacerbated with the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in Nepal, with assessments by our Trustees in Nepal suggesting that mountain communities based on subsistence farming are likely to experience food shortages, interrupted access to seeds and agricultural inputs and the danger of famine and malnutrition. This project builds on a post-earthquake livelihoods programme in North Gorkha (2016-2021), which piloted micro-agricultural development, by modeling kitchen gardens in Tsum Nubri and the provision of monthly agricultural development training workshops to mothers’ groups in North Gorkha.

After 3yrs 800 ‘hard to reach’ female and male farmers will be producing green vegetables all year round, many families will receive additional cash income from crop sales. 3,000 women and 800 men will have increased knowledge of nutrition. The project has been implemented since July 2015 to address the livelihoods and WASH needs of the families living in the IDPs Camps in 2 VDCs (Lahrepauwa and Daibang) in Rasuwa district. The project aims to reach above 500 families in 4 different camps (camp B=Lahrepauwa-Dandagaun 163 HHs, Camp D=Lahrepauwa-Haku 200 HHs, Camp A=Lahrepauwa-Haku camp 65 HHs and Camp C=Daibang-Haku camp 63 HHs). there has been minor changes in the total number of the households as there is still people moving. Cordaid and its two partners Parivartan Patra and Lumanti) has established vocational centres for short term trade courses including carpentry, masonry, handicrafts (bamboo baskets in particular). Individuals from the IDPs and host communities have been/are being selected on set criteria to provide them the skills. some of the trades were outsourced to local providers like mobile repairs, computer skills and driving lessons. As envisaged the carpenters' and masons' skills as reported are being utilized in the reconstruction of the damaged houses in their local communities. The products prepared during these trainings/vocational centres were exhibited in local mela (exhibition festival) near Lahrepauwa VDC to attract market for the products. An agro-farm has also been established for the IDPs to grow innovative agri-products including seasonal and off season vegetable and mushrooms to support their livelihoods in the local markets. In continuation of applying the learning from the agro-farm Cordaid and parivartan has further supported the leading farmers from the IDPs communities to establish their own afro-farming tunnels to grow different seasonal vegetables like tomatoes, cauliflower, garlic, beans etc. 3 afro-farms have been established. Another major component of the project is to ensure for the safe drinking water and sanitation facilities both for men and women meeting the minimum humanitarian standards, and improved hygiene messages are being delivered to the camps dwellers through Child clubs organized in camps. project has also constructed child friendly spaces in some camps where the residents agreed on their construction to help the camps children in their recreational activities and continuous hygiene messages to reach to their parents and households living in the camps. In the context of these IDPs the project has been a great success in engaging them for learning different vocational skills as the there are still no clear plans from the government side for their resettlement. they have been supported with learning innovative vegetable growing techniques, establishing their own poultry farms, clothes sewing skills etc. Cordaid in Nepal and its partner Parivartan Patra, is successful in wining part of the Ockenden International Award with CAFOD's support and will continue the activities with the IDPs as CAFOD's funding deadline will finish in the end of April 2017.

Inclusive and Accountable Schools is a cooperation project of Loo Niva Child Concern Patan Community Based Rehabilitation and Interpedia Finland Ry. This project builds on previous co-operation between Loo Niva and Interpedia with a new partnership with Patan CBR adding expertise in children with disabilities.Previous work aimed to contribute t o strengthening efficient and effective school and local education governance mechanism in South Lalitpur. This project is focused on promoting inclusive and accountable schools as well as advancing the realization of the right to education for marginalize d children who face discrimination particularly due to disabilities or the caste but also due to gender and ethnicity. The goal to increase inclusion of these vulnerable groups of children will be achieved by identifying and finding excluded children; prov iding material and financial support that sustains enrolment to school; sensitizing training and rising awareness about rights needs and potential of marginalized children among children parents and teachers; improving school governance and using local med ia for raising awareness of the importance of education for all children. The three organizations involved have versatile expertise of both advancing the right to education improving governance and advancing the involvement of children from margin groups f or instance children with disabilities and dalit children. Moreover the project has been designed with consultation of children local communities and authorities for ensuring engagement of the local communities as well as the most effective implementation of the project in promoting the right to education. From the beginning the project has been planned in collaboration with local and national level authorities other NGOs and community groups for ensuring the sustainability and continuity of the good result s of the project.

Supporting Democracy and Peace-building through Investigative Journalism in Nepal has been a two year project (2010-2011/12) jointly implemented by CIJ Nepal and Vikes Finland. Investigative journalism is the extreme need of the country where corruptions b ad governance conflict marginalization of people are the common phenomena. Despite some individual?s effort an effective investigative journalism is still missing in the media.Well-researched in-depth and explorative reporting is necessary to promote quali ty debate on national agenda including the discussion on democratization peace-building and governance in Nepal. With this broad concept the first project trained about 50 mid-career journalists to produce well-researched and in-depth stories on various as pects of peace-building and democracy and to publish them in local regional or national media. in 2012 gate-keeper journalists were sensitized to IJ. The second part of the project will take the training from Kathmandu to eastern far-western and mid-wester n parts of the country. The overall objective is to increase and widen the field of investigative journalism. The intermediate objectives will be similar to earlier efforts ? Refresh and enhance the skills of journalists in investigative journalism which i s key to increasing the quality of the debate in the media? Produce a quality content that will ?raise the bar? for all media in Nepal.? Inform the public on the issues in a manner that is not done by the media which essentially remains caught up in day-to -day reporting.? Better inform the general public on the issues of the day and contribute towards their decision making process and influence the debate during constitution writing and upcoming elections. The major outcome of the project is expected to su pport democratic governance and peace process in Nepal through investigative journalism. But the immediate expected outcomes are: ? The planned project is a continuation for the ongoing project ?Integrating Mental Health in Primary Health Care in a Post-conflict Setting 2012-2014? which took place in Dang district in Nepal. In the second phase of the project the aim is to improve equal access to effective treatment of mental health problems. The project will be expanded to cover the whole district (548.000 inhabitants). After this continuation phase responsibility of the project will be handed over to local authorities. The prevalence o f mental health problems is high but no mental health professionals work in the public healthcare system in the whole district. The aim is to develop the activities implemented in the first phase of the project in a way that enables the actors of the local health system to continue them independently. All government health facilities including primary care units and hospitals will be covered.The immediate objectives are to improve the capacity of the primary health care workers to detect and treat common me ntal disorders to improve access to specialised psychiatric services at district level and to raise the level of awareness of mental health and to reduce negative attitudes of the general population. Training sessions will be organised for female health ca re volunteers primary health care workers and hospital-based medical officers. Four psychosocial counsellors hired by the project will provide counselling services as well as supervise trained primary health care workers in providing support to people who suffer from common mental disorders. The effectiveness of counselling will be studied by using a randomised controlled trial (RCT) design. Specialised care will be offered to a selected group of patients with severe disorders. Information about mental heal th mental health problems and coping skills will be distributed via community mental health promotion workshops (CMHP) school mental health programmes radio programs and printed materials. Advocacy work will be focused on increasing the human resources in public mental health services in Dang.

This will be done by: (a) organizing a central level consultation meeting in Kathmandu to establish the roles and responsibilities of organizations participating in the project; (b) obtaining government approval to place GPS collars on rhinos; (c) procuring the necessary equipment for conduct of the project; (d) conducting a field level coordination meeting at Bardia National Park to coordinate field level activities among the various involved agencies; (e) training the four local people who will carry out the projects field duties; (f) capturing, collaring and tracking four rhinos for one year; (g) mapping the land-use and land cover data in Khata corridor using high resolutions satellite imagery; (h) interpreting the images and assigning rhino movement data to land-use and land cover classes based on wildlife habitat suitability; (I) assessing and classifying the forests of the project area into different classes based on succession and restoration; (j) overlaying the GPS locations from the collared rhinos on the land-use and land cover maps to determine how rhinos move through the corridor habitat matrix; (k) using the preferred habitats of rhinos in the Khata to optimize land-use planning; (l) using the rhino habitat use data to develop a tactical patrolling plan for use by the CBAPO at the local level; and (m) utilizing the project data in assessing the potential of the Karnali, Basanta and Laljhadi corridors for rhino movement.
