Development projects in Nepal

Nepal will utilize two pronged approaches: (i) Deepening and diversifying the ongoing work of SDHS in two districts of SudurpaschimProvince as a core impact site; and (ii) Expanding in a new district in Karnali Province as a scaling out/up site. The project will benefit a total of 15,000 beneficiaries (2,500 direct and an additional 12,500 indirect beneficiaries) through partnerships with governments (local to national), CSOs and networks, and development partners with similar priorities active in the regions. In 2024, the project will establish partnerships with government, National Federation of Farmers Group (NFGF), Community Seed Bank Association of Nepal (CSBAN), Land Rights and Right to Food Networks, and value chain actors and private sectors. Global Partners and Allies will include (1) Agroecology Coalition: The program partner (LI-BIRD) will join the Agroecology coalition and contribute to the Agroecology Campaign by sharing the ground evidence and documentation and forge collaboration to strengthen the Agroecology movement in Nepal. (2) Farmer Managed Systems Group led by Oxfam Novib and CRS: The program will actively contribute on issues related to farmer-managed seed systems by sharing Nepal learnings in Farmer's Variety Registration and Source Maintenance Forum. The program will actively participate and engage in organising workshops and side events in relevant international forums such as CBD and ITPGRFA. (3) International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD): IFAD is supporting Nepalgovernment in developing a project based on agroecology entitled ‘Resilient High-Value Agriculture Project (R-HVAP)’ to be implemented in Sudurpaschim, Karnali and Lumbini Provinces. LI-BIRD contributed significantly to the design of this project, and expects to collaborate during the implementation phase.

The Strengthening Urban Resilience and Engagement ( SURE ) programme is a five-year DFID-funded multi-hazard urban risk reduction programme running from September 2016 until August 2021. Given emerging risks and hazard trends the programme continues engagement in the three districts of the Kathmandu valley and expanding further west into two additional districts. The programme aims to see increased action in target municipalities by citizens government and the Nepal Red Cross Society to reduce and respond to multi hazard risks increasing overall disaster resilience and enabling timely and effective response by the Nepal Red Cross Society. Impact: Target municipalities have increased their disaster resilience and are supported by the Nepal Red Cross Society with timely and effective disaster response. Outcome: Targeted municipalities are increasingly taking action to reduce and respond to multi hazard risks through citizens government and the Nepal Red Cross Society. Output 1: Awareness and action in urban DRR for informed citizen voice and greater social accountability is increased enhancing DRR capacity in targeted municipalities. Output 2: DRR advocacy and support and strengthening of preparedness for response enhances the capacity of municipalities and is aligned to existing policies and structures. Output 3: NRCS is stronger and well organised in order to better respond to vulnerable communities and individuals. Output 4: NRCS and BRC actively learn with urban partners and external institutions to contribute to improved thematic and institutional knowledge and practice enabling efficient and effective programming with partners.

The purpose of this grant is to support assessment of the status of Nepals tigers (now routinely carried out at four year intervals) to evaluate the effectiveness of conservation interventions taken since the last assessment and to provide information needed to plan conservation interventions for the upcoming four years. The Recipient will do this by: (1) forming a central task force in the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation (DNPWC) made up of representatives from DNPWC, the Department of Forest, WWF Nepal and the National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC) to review and adapt the monitoring methods based on the monitoring protocol produced in 2008; (2) form the field monitoring teams for each of the five protected areas that will carry out the fieldwork; (3) train and orient the monitoring teams; (4) carry out camera trapping surveys to estimate tiger populations in Suklaphanta Wildlife Reserve, Bardia National Park, Banke National Park, Chitwan National Park and Parsa Wildlife as well as the critical habitat corridors of Khata, Basanta, Kamdi and Barandabahar; (5) carry out habitat occupancy surveys both inside and outside of the protected areas to include the occupancy pattern of both tigers and their prey as well as relevant data such as cattle grazing, tree lopping, tree cutting, encroachment and poaching sign; (6) carry out line transect surveys for prey species; (7) carry out analysis of the camera-trapping data, the occupancy data, and the prey transect data; and (8) work with the task force to prepare a comprehensive report detailing the results of the tiger camera trapping in the core areas of the major protected areas, the occupancy surveys of both tigers and prey at the landscape level and the prey density work.

Supporting the Education of Marginalised Girls in Kailali (STEM) 1) Training marginalised girls to complete a full cycle of education. The transboundary Khata and Karnali forest corridors in the western Terai landscape of Nepal connect the important protected areas of Bardia National Park, Nepal to Katerniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary, India, and is home to wild Asian elephants, rhinos, and tigers. This project will work to to strengthen human-elephant coexistence (HECx) in this landscape and promote science-based management of wild elephants through the revision of the Nepal Elephant Conservation Action Plan (NECAP). Over three years, this project will transform the quality of life of 1,365 children who develop cancer in Nepal by improving the accessibility, quality and equity of cancer treatment and the skills of healthcare staff. The project will also allow for more treatment to be provided outside the capital Kathmandu, closer to children’s homes. The combination of treatment close to home and the psychosocial support provided will ensure that fewer families reject or abandon treatment for their children. This is currently a particular problem for girls who are less likely to be presented for diagnosis and whose families are more likely to either reject or abandon their treatment. The provision of early warning signs training will ensure that more children who develop cancer receive a diagnosis and the opportunity of treatment, and that often diagnoses will be earlier, increasing the chance of successful treatment.
