Development projects in Nepal

Preventing instability in the Asia-Pacific region and globally is a foreign policy priority for the government. Australia has been a strong supporter of and signatory to the UN Programme of Action (UN PoA) to Prevent, Combat and Eradicate the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All its Aspects since its inception in 2001; and the Geneva Declaration on Armed Violence since its inception in 2006. The UN PoA outlines steps for countries to take to prevent the illicit trade in small arms and light weapons (SALW), while the Geneva Declaration commits signatories to strengthening efforts to integrate strategies for armed violence reduction and conflict prevention into national, regional and multilateral development plans and programs. The Australian Leadership Awards (ALA) aim to develop leadership and build partnerships and linkages within developing countries, while addressing priority development issues of the region. ALA Scholarships are for study at Masters or Doctorate level in an Australian university. Study programs must relate to a priority development area: disability, economic growth, education, environment, food security, gender, governance, health, human rights, infrastructure, regional stability, rural development, water and sanitation. Reducing maternal mortality is one of the key priorities for the Government of Nepal's health sector program.
