Armed Violence Reduction (AVR)

Preventing instability in the Asia-Pacific region and globally is a foreign policy priority for the government. Australia has been a strong supporter of and signatory to the UN Programme of Action (UN PoA) to Prevent, Combat and Eradicate the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All its Aspects since its inception in 2001; and the Geneva Declaration on Armed Violence since its inception in 2006. The UN PoA outlines steps for countries to take to prevent the illicit trade in small arms and light weapons (SALW), while the Geneva Declaration commits signatories to strengthening efforts to integrate strategies for armed violence reduction and conflict prevention into national, regional and multilateral development plans and programs. This funding supports various activities which aim to reduce armed violence through grants to multiple organisations with a goal of AVR under the guidelines of UN PoA and the Geneva Declaration.
