Development projects in Nepal

Asia Disaster Preparedness Center, ADPC, has applied to Sida for funding of 5 933 000 USD (54 million SEK) to carry out the "Building resilience through inclusive and climate-adaptive disaster risk reduction in Asia-Pacific" in Asia and Pacific during the period 2017-2022. The five-year program aims to enhance regional capacity for cooperation on disaster and climate risk management with an overall objective of building resilience of people in the Asia-Pacific region. This will be achieved by building on current good practices and providing technical assistance to select governments, civil society organizations and regional bodies. Key focus areas of the program include: emergency preparedness and humanitarian response management; facilitating the use of risk information and sex-age-disability-disaggregated data by policy makers and disaster managers; integrating disaster and climate change concerns into development policy and programs; promoting inclusion and protection-sensitive approaches in risk reduction and disaster preparedness, promoting gender equality and women leadership for risk resilience; and enhancing the role of the Regional Consultative Committee on Disaster Management (RCC) to support member countries on implementing global frameworks and serving as a conduit for South-South learning, transboundary risk reduction and knowledge sharing. ADPC will implement the intervention together with the Swedish Contingency Agency, MSB, Stockholm Environment Institute –Asia, and the Raul Wallenberg Institute.

A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Nepal in between Kathmandu and Pokhra. The epicenter was 30 km east-south-east of Lamjung district. The earthquake has caused a number of landslides and avalanches. Strong aftershocks, including a 6.7 magnitude quake on 26 April, continued to threaten the lives of thousands of people and to further damage buildings and infrastructure. Many people are afraid and have slept outside for several consecutive nights, in spite of the falling rain. According to UN, it is estimated that over 8 million people are affected in 39 of Nepal’s 75 districts. Over 2 million people live in the 11 most critically hit districts. CRS has committed resources to relief efforts and has requested Caritas to begin procuring emergency relief materials such as tarpaulins/shelter kits and water, sanitation and hygiene materials. CRS is also looking at transporting materials from India to Nepal and has contacted the UN Hub in Dubai to request options for humanitarian supply flights from Dubai. Caritas Nepal launched a response in the immediate aftermath of the disaster. Distribution of supplies, including food packages, tarpaulins, have already occurred. Through grassroots organisations and partner CBOs, and the ability to mobilise a high number of volunteers, Caritas Nepal is well placed to deliver an immediate relief and subsequent recovery programme. The scale of the disaster and the willingness of Caritas organisations to respond necessitates a rapid response through this appeal. This response will meet urgent needs in shelter, WASH, and non-food items. A follow up full Emergency Appeal will be prepared to include a comprehensive recovery strategy. The funding from this appeal will ensure Caritas Nepal can continue relief operations- focused primarily on immediate shelter needs non-food items, with a focus on provision of water and hygiene kits in 7 of the worst affected districts. 4 new district offices and warehouses will be established to coordinate and manage the response. CAFOD has since responded to the relief efforts and has deployed a number of staff to the country. Our response will focus on WASH, shelter and protection components.

Following a devastating earthquake on April 25th 2015, the Australian Defence Force delivered over 13 tonnes of Australian Aid to Nepal and evacuated 106 Australian and other foreign nationals to Thailand. Using two RAAF C-17A Globemaster III strategic airlift aircraft, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade-supplied aid was flown into Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport. Civilian evacuees then boarded the aircraft and were flown out to Bangkok. The C-17s also carried into Kathmandu five Defence personnel who were then integrated into the staff of the Australian Embassy to assist with the Australian Government response to the disaster.

The purpose of this project is to study the behavior and genetics of wild Asian elephants in the Chitwan-Parsa National Park complex of Nepal to better understand the drivers of conflict elephant behavior and overall population structure of this subpopulation in Nepal. Specific project activities include: 1) conduct a population survey using genetic techniques; 2) using dung samples perform ELISA tests on stress hormone levels in elephants; 3) extract DNA for DNA-based profiles of individuals; 4) establish and train a rapid response team for human-elephant conflict events; 5) conduct three visits for villagers of high HEC villages to elephant-bearing protected areas. This project will produce reports on the population status and structure of Asian elephants in the Chitwan-Parsa complex, contribute to a better understanding of stress on elephant conflict behavior, build a DNA-profile database of the existing population, create a well-equipped HEC rapid response team, and increase the tolerance of local inhabitants to elephants and overall contribute to the conservation of wild Asian elephants in Nepal. ."

On 25th April 2015 a devastating earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale occurred in Nepal, 48 miles from the capital of Kathmandu following which there were at least 30 aftershocks. Thousands were injured and thousands died. JOA granted Oxfam £30,000 for the provision of emergency food, access to clean safe water and hygiene kits, Save the Children £30,000 for the provision of shelter support, rope and essential household items, British Red Cross £30,000 for thousands of tarpaulins, oral rehydration salts, soap, water purification tablets and first aid. JOA also gave £50,000 to the Bailiff’s Disaster Appeal matching public fundraising in Jersey for the provision of a longer term sustainable project.

On 09 April, 2015, a sudden fire started from a house leaving 160 houses of a village in Rampura Malhaniya-5, Saptari in ashes. According to District Administration Office, properties worth Rs. 20 million were destroyed and 65 families were rendered homeless in the incident. The houses had thatched roofs and timber and bamboo walls hence the fire quickly spread throughout the village. JOA granted Habitat for Humanity £30,000 for the provision of emergency shelter.

The Strengthening Urban Resilience and Engagement ( SURE ) programme is a five-year DFID-funded multi-hazard urban risk reduction programme running from September 2016 until August 2021. Given emerging risks and hazard trends the programme continues engagement in the three districts of the Kathmandu valley and expanding further west into two additional districts. The programme aims to see increased action in target municipalities by citizens government and the Nepal Red Cross Society to reduce and respond to multi hazard risks increasing overall disaster resilience and enabling timely and effective response by the Nepal Red Cross Society. The targeted municipalities include six within the previously-engaged districts of the Kathmandu valley namely: Kathmandu sub-metropolitan city and Budhanilkantha municipality in Kathmandu district Bajrabarahi and Karyabinayak municipalities in Lalitpur district and Bhaktapur and Madhyapur Thimi municipalities in Bhaktapur district and two additional municipalities in the West and Far-West specifically Pokhara sub-metropolitan city and Dhangadhi sub-metropolitan city. Impact: Target municipalities have increased their disaster resilience and are supported by the Nepal Red Cross Society with timely and effective disaster response. Outcome: Targeted municipalities are increasingly taking action to reduce and respond to multi hazard risks through citizens government and the Nepal Red Cross Society. Output 1: Awareness and action in urban DRR for informed citizen voice and greater social accountability is increased enhancing DRR capacity in targeted municipalities. Output 2: DRR advocacy and support and strengthening of preparedness for response enhances the capacity of municipalities and is aligned to existing policies and structures. Output 3: NRCS is stronger and well organised in order to better respond to vulnerable communities and individuals. Output 4: NRCS and BRC actively learn with urban partners and external institutions to contribute to improved thematic and institutional knowledge and practice enabling efficient and effective programming with partners.
