Promote agro ecology which leads to secure livelihood and income generation for farmers and community in Nepal
90%data completenessThe project partner runs a training institute that offers non-academic training in the field of social work. The focus is on courses that enable young people, particularly those from rural areas, to acquire the basic knowledge required for social and development work in their home communities. The aim is also to reduce the exodus of young people from their home communities. Many NGOs send their staff to the institute for training or recruit personnel trained there. In addition, the project partner supports local NGOs and cooperatives in rural areas with their organisational development and the implementation of their projects, particularly in the least developed western regions of Nepal. This makes an important contribution to improving the living conditions of numerous marginalised families in the project area. The project’s objectives include introducing smallholder farmers to organic farming by using local seeds, compost fertiliser and organic technologies. Furthermore, young people and agricultural leaders learn about community-led development processes and work together to address shared concerns. Young leaders are also trained to support marginalised communities.

Empowering women, children and young people and promoting gender equality in western Nepal
95%data completenessIn Nepal, people face systemic gender-based discrimination that limits womens and marginalised groups access to education, healthcare, economic resources and participation in decision-making processes. The project implementer has set itself the goal of strengthening the livelihoods of survivors of gender-based violence (GBV) and gender-based discrimination (GBD) by integrating climate change adaptation strategies to ensure long-term resilience and sustainability. The direct target group comprises a total of approximately 3,700 women, children and young people who participate in and benefit from the activities. The targeted support for women in the project area will improve their living conditions in the long term and strengthen their resilience to gender-based violence and discrimination. They will gain access to training measures and climate-resilient income-generating opportunities in order to achieve greater economic independence and protection from GBD and GBV. Furthermore, support structures for women will be strengthened in order to combat gender-based violence and gender-based discrimination. Access to specialised health services and the introduction of climate-friendly, energy-efficient planning and practices will ensure improved reproductive and general health for women and girls in the project area. To achieve this, numerous training courses will be held, cooperation with the local government will be intensified and networks will be formed.

Improving the resilience of communities to risks posed by natural disasters and climate change in Nepal
90%data completenessNatural disasters, which occur almost annually, repeatedly demonstrate how vulnerable the population of Nepal is in such situations. In the south of the country, more than half of the land is used for agriculture and 70% of the population is employed in this sector. However, many of the communities are threatened by flooding during the rainy season. If the harvest is poor or fails altogether, supplies are destroyed and people lose their animals, and self-sufficient food security is also threatened. It is therefore important to establish local mechanisms for disaster response, to initiate adaptation to the challenges posed by climate change and to promote the development of disaster guidelines at all levels of the country. This is being done, among other things, by strengthening the capacities of communities and local governments in the areas of climate protection, disaster prevention and emergency response. In addition, climate-friendly agriculture and green employment opportunities for women and young leaders are being promoted. The project is primarily aimed at schools, local government agencies, young entrepreneurs, women, young people and children. Childrens eco-clubs have been set up and information desks on climate protection have been installed in schools. The local government and schools are being supported in the development of environmentally friendly model schools with green components, including energy efficiency (solar energy) and waste management. Young businesses receive training on green jobs and business plans, including the promotion of worm composting. In addition, there will be at least one ‘climate-friendly agriculture and ecotourism village’ in each community. These are some of the measures designed to raise awareness of climate protection and disaster prevention among the target groups.

Trained community members support local communities in addressing individual and collective problems and finding peaceful solutions. The project places a particular focus on young women. An important component, therefore, is the strengthening of skills and self-esteem among young people, many of whom come from marginalized communities. To address the wide range of psychological problems, many of which are also a result of the armed conflict, psychosocial counselling is being offered.

Implementation of a joint project on sustainability and the generation and storage of renewable energies with the municipality of Rainas / Nepal
95%data completenessAs part of Agenda 2030 and the Global Responsibility and One World theme of Detmolds sustainability strategy, the city of Detmold has entered into a long-term and equal city partnership with the municipality of Rainas in Nepal, specifically on the topic of sustainability. During the visit of the Nepalese delegation to Detmold in December 2023, it was jointly determined that the topics of renewable energy production and use represent a common area of interest in which extensive knowledge could be exchanged and joint projects and implementation steps defined. For example, the municipality of Rainas has a photovoltaic system that is currently unusable due to a technical defect. In the meantime, the exchange has been further intensified and a cooperation project has been set up with Stadtwerke Detmold and the association Elektriker ohne Grenzen e.V. (Electricians without Borders), in which a delegation from the Detmold city administration, Detmold municipal utilities and the association will travel to Rainas to repair the existing photovoltaic system and establish further cost-effective decentralised solutions such as balcony power plants with storage facilities, initially as part of a pilot project.

Support to Gender Equality and Social Inclusion in the Health Sector (S2GESI)
95%data completenessContext: The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) has supported health and social protection system development in Nepal since 1994. Significant progress has been made since the civil war ended in 2006, with notable reductions in maternal and infant mortality. However, societal gender stereotypes and discrimination remain pervasive, posing multiple challenges in the health sector. Inequalities in health access, coupled with corruption risks, deepen existing social tensions. Addressing these challenges requires enhancing institutional mechanisms, empowering vulnerable populations, and tailoring health services and insurance schemes to their needs, aiming to reduce disparities and improve overall health outcomes. Objective: The availability and accessibility of gender responsive health services and social protection provision for women and marginalized groups have improved at both the national and local levels. Approach: S2GESI supports the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) and selected municipalities in two provinces in implementing the National Strategy of the Ministry of Health and Population on Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI). It aims to make gender-responsive health services available and accessible for women and marginalized groups at both national and local levels. It focuses on three key areas: a) mainstreaming of the GESI strategy of the MoHP in municipal health management through demand-driven sector planning for gender-sensitive health services provisions. b) increasing health insurance coverage and access to good quality health services for wom-en and marginalized groups, facilitated by improved enrolment strategies and electronic birth registration to address the gender gap, c) implementing approaches to lower supply-side barriers to access health services, including gender-responsive action plans to increase utilisation of good quality health care services by marginalized and vulnerable population

Support to the Health Sector Strategy II in Nepal
95%data completenessContext: The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) has sup-ported Nepal’s health sector development since 1994. Nepal’s social health security schemes, introduced in recent years, remain underdeveloped, leaving citizens inadequately protected and perpetuating inequities in healthcare access. Moreover, systemic deficits hinder modernization, particularly in digitalization, crucial for im-proving health service delivery. Objective: The institutional capacities of state actors in the health system, in particular the Ministry of Health and Population, the Health Insurance Board and selected municipal health authorities in two provinces, to implement the Nepal Health Sector Strategic Plan have been enhanced. Approach: S2HSS II aims to strengthen the abilities of key actors in the health sector, particularly the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP), the Health Insurance Board (HIB), and selected sub-national health authorities in two provinces, to provide equitable and quality healthcare services for everyone. Building on past achievements, it focuses on three main areas: a) Strengthening organizational management and improving the financial sustainability of na-tional health insurance program, that involves supporting HIB to develop strategies for sus-tainable financing and efficient claims management, as a foundation to increase insurance coverage among poor and vulnerable populations. b) Promoting evidence-based health management through data-driven decision-making and citizen participation, leading to efficient sectoral planning at sub national level and c) Strengthening digital health information systems by establishing standards, ensuring in-teroperability and allowing efficient data exchange leading to better data-driven decision-making, reduced costs, and enhanced public health outcomes.
