Nepal?s education system can?t offer child friendly school environment to all. Project?s development problem is that public schools and teachers lack adequate teaching learning methods and infrastructure resulting children dropping out of schools. This pro ject aims to strengthen teacher?s role in their community and inside the education system form learning network among teachers promote child?s rights and participation in schools and sensitize stakeholders to take responsible role for implementation. Throu gh these activities the objective of this project: Child Friendly School concept is widely accepted and practiced in public schools in the project area. Motivated and skilful teachers and inspiring and safe school environment are available to all the child ren at the 14 schools in 5 VDCs will be reached.

This project focuses on the approximately 6300 Lhomi people living in the remote area of the highlands in northeast Nepal Khandbari and Kathmandu. The main development problems are: extreme poverty very high child + mother mortality no functional healthcar e system and poor education. In addition there are no roads and there is no electricity. The objectives of this project are threefold: - Increase the number of functionally literate children and adults in both Lhomi and Nepali- Provide awareness raising an d training in hygiene and basic healthcare midwifery veterinary skills- Set up 3 pilot MLE preschoolsA conclusive review of all the national policy papers concerning literacy work in Nepal indicates that the objectives and activities of this project are cl early in line with the strategic plans and policies of the government of Nepal. During a meeting in March 2008 between NELHOS the Ministry of Education and the Non Formal Education Centre (NFEC) the government representatives were very interested in the Lh omi project. Additionally Nepal?s most recent PRSP has been used as a reference point to lend more legitimacy to the project?s activities. There are two targets in the PRSP that are directly taken into account through this project:1. To improve literacy ra tes of people over 15 years old2. To increase literacy rates of women and girls over 15 years oldThe project?s ethos is influenced by international development policy objectives including the eradication of poverty through increased education promotion of women?s empowerment and gender equality use of environmentally friendly technology and the promotion of education as a basic human right. NELHOS seeks to improve the economic and social position of the Lhomi people through providing mother tongue education to Nepal?s Lhomi community in combination with vocational training. The link between education and poverty reduction is widely acknowledged in the international community. The project will also give women and girls a second chance to learn to read and wri te in Lhomi and Nepali. Approximately 85% of the project?s participants in the first stage were women, this was very successful.In order to accomplish the project?s objectives the following activities will take place:- Set up community development committe es in 18 villages- Manage an adult literacy program- Set up 3 MLE pilot preschools- Provide vocational training- Build NELHOS?s capacities

Supporting Democracy and Peace-building through Investigative Journalism in Nepal has been a two year project (2010-2011/12) jointly implemented by CIJ Nepal and Vikes Finland. Investigative journalism is the extreme need of the country where corruptions b ad governance conflict marginalization of people are the common phenomena. Despite some individual's effort an effective investigative journalism is still missing in the media.Well-researched in-depth and explorative reporting is necessary to promote quali ty debate on national agenda including the discussion on democratization peace-building and governance in Nepal. With this broad concept the first project trained about 50 mid-career journalists to produce well-researched and in-depth stories on various as pects of peace-building and democracy and to publish them in local regional or national media. in 2012 gate-keeper journalists were sensitized to IJ. The second part of the project will take the training from Kathmandu to eastern far-western and mid-wester n parts of the country. The overall objective is to increase and widen the field of investigative journalism. The intermediate objectives will be similar to earlier efforts. Refresh and enhance the skills of journalists in investigative journalism which is key to increasing the quality of the debate in the media? Produce a quality content that will raise the bar for all media in Nepal. Inform the public on the issues in a manner that is not done by the media which essentially remains caught up in day-to-day reporting. Better inform the general public on the issues of the day and contribute towards their decision making process and influence the debate during constitution writing and upcoming elections. The major outcome of the project is expected to support democratic governance and peace process in Nepal through investigative journalism. But the immediate expected outcomes are: Provide training to 75 young journalists from different part of Nepal in the field of investigative journalism,? Produce at least 5 0 well- researched articles and publish them in the media. All or the best articles compiled and published as a book (in Nepali and English) for wider dissemination. Nepal is a country with a history of conflict lack of education and rule by the few.Our project aims to tackle these issues by strengthening the capacity of a local youth organization - Nepal Scouts - which with 30 000 members working with the youth all ov er Nepal. The objective of the project in the long run is to promote the participation of children and youth gender equality as well as role of the civil society in developing local communities and peace building by strengthening the capacity of Nepal Scou ts. By enabling Nepal Scouts to be more efficient and democratic NGO the project aims to enforce civil participation of Nepalese citizens as well as offer quality non-formal education.The project and it's two hired employees will work from the Nepal Scouts Headquarters in Kathmandu from where they will organize project activities in cooperation with the Nepal Scouts volunteers all over the country.The project's main activities are Youth Participation and Peace Forums Leadership Trainings Trainers' Seminars (ToT) locally organized Community Development Projects and development of Educational Methods. Beneficiaries constitute from young membes of Nepal Scouts volunteering scout leaders scout trainers local community people and key persons of Nepal Scouts.

The extension phase is necessary for achieving sustainability of the mobilization processes started during 2010-2012. The established women's groups will be continued but at the same time also other community based thematic groups will be strengthened su ch as water users groups and community forest users groups. Women's participation in elections and local government will be promoted by training.In the environmental health component the financial support will be geared more towards ultrapoor households. T hey will benefit from EcoSan toilet components and smokeless stove components provided by the project. For other beneficiaries support will be mainly technical advice and training for ensuring the proper location and construction of toilets their maintenan ce and utilization of urine and compost in organic farming. This component will be coordinated with the VDC and District level water sanitation and hygiene coordination committees' work aiming at Open Defecation Free Devichaur. The technical inputs are i ntegrated with preventive health awareness through the Female Community Health Volunteers (FCHV) who will continue to be capacitated.The income generation activities (IGA) will be continued and experiences from pilot projects disseminated within Devichaur. Training providing microloans and facilitating the services and financing from District offices will be used to obtain the goal of poverty alleviation with women's role as the main cross-cutting aspect. The environmental sustainability of the new IGA p roducts will be ensured taking into consideration climate change resilience such as erosion risk mitigation.

The proposed project is continuation of the earlier MFA funded project in the Indrawati Sub-basin of the Koshi river basin (Jan 2010-Dec 2012). This project is based on the outcomes needs and recommendations of the first phase and has involved extensive st akeholder consultation in the process of design and planning. The overall development objective of the project is: By 2020 water and related resources of Koshi basin are best managed (in the face of climate change and development scenario) to promote socio economic development for the benefit of all the local people especially the poorest and marginalized while maintaining the ecological balance.The immediate objectives include: 1) By 2016 institutional structures are functional having broad-based partner su pport to implement democratic IWRM approach which empowers local communities and marginalised groups to participate in decision-making planning and implementation 2) By 2016 local communities in target areas are empowered and capacitated to manage natural resources sustainably and to reduce their vulnerability against the impact of climate change through rights-based approach complemented by optimised economic benefits from water and other natural resources At the catchment level the project will be impleme nted through the 9 Integrated Resource Management Committee (IRMCs) the legally registered institutions that were established and institutionalized during the first phase. The IRMCs are responsible for planning and implementation of the IWRM activities at catchment levels with the technical and financial support from project office. The project will strengthen them further to enhance their capability to function as an independent institutions in the longer run. In addition the project will play an instrumen tal role of coordinating with the concerned and relevant agencies and organizations for the IRMCs to enable them to raise funds for sustainable functioning.The proposed project will directly benefit atleast 4000 HHs and 20000 individuals across the project intervention areas in Indrawati. Indigenous people (IPs) Marginalized Janajatis and disadvantaged groups primarily women will be project's prime focus. IRMCs Eco-clubs water smart communities Buffer zone user committees are the direct beneficiaries. The i ndirect beneficiaries are primarily the stakeholders indirectly associated with IRMCs and different user groups (waterirrigation farmers forest agriculture).

Bajhang is one of the least developed districts of Nepal where almost 50 % of people live below poverty line and suffer from food insecurity. Agricultural productivity is low due to lack of technical knowledge and unavailability of quality inputs and irrigation facilities. There are natural resources available but due to limited knowhow and poor market access people are not able to use them for livelihood improvement purpose. Masta Rural Municipality has patriarchal social structures where women are suffering from gender discrimination and violence and are excluded from decision-making. There are also other marginalized groups such as Dalits and persons with disabilities who are suffering from multiple discrimination and are excluded from decision making process both at home and other public domain. So, efforts are needed to provide women with equal rights and empowerment opportunities for their greater participation and access to resources. The objective of this project is to uplift the livelihoods and food security of the socially and economically marginalized communities of Masta Rural Municipality through improved organic farming practices, value addition and better access to markets, empower women through capacity development and leadership trainings and build more resilient communities through sustainable animal husbandry and developing NTFP-based and other new livelihood opportunities. The project will also promote better hygiene practices and food diversification for improved health and nutrition of the target communities. The project implemented by Sahara Nepal and supported by Swallows supports Finland's development objectives by increasing food security and promoting sustainable use of natural resources and enhancing the rights and status of women and girls. The project will strengthen local partner organization's capacity and role in community capacity building and establishing linkages between communities and local government. The project is expected to benefit directly about 700 poor households. More than half of the direct beneficiaries will be women.

Chepang and Tamang communities living in the hills of central Nepal are among the most marginalized and resource poor groups in Nepal.Their tiny land holdings provide no more than 3 to 6 months of food security and deforestation has contributed to environmental degradation. Due to lack of knowledge of efficient and sustainable agricultural practices and land-tenure rights, the communities are practicing unsustainable agriculture and animal husbandry which aggravate soil erosion that causes regular landslides that destroy agricultural fields and threaten the lives of people and animals. To improve access to remote villages, local government has started infrastructure development projects without proper social and environmental impact assessments. The objective of this project is to uplift the livelihoods and food security of the Chepang and Tamang communities through agro-forestry development and developed market access, strenghten community-based natural resource management, sustainable land use and climate change adaptation and empower women and persons with disabilities.This is achieved by, e.g. developing sound biodiversity management and sustainable livelihood activities in cooperation with community-based organizations and local government. Capacity building of forest user groups will be done to strenghten their operational capacity and local government will be supported in preparation and implementation of the local climate change adaptation plan of action. The continuation project implemented by NAFAN and supported by Swallows supports Finland's development objectives by increasing food security and promoting sustainable use of natural resources, local democracy and participation of women in decision making. The project will strengthen local partner organization's capacity and role in community capacity building and establishing linkages between communities and local government. The project is expected to benefit directly around 3000 right-holders and 150 duty-bearers. In addition, approx. 3500 people are expected to benefit indirectly.

Beginning in the second week of August, Nepal experienced a period of sustained, heavy rainfall resulting in widespread flooding across 35 of the 75 districts. The number of affected schools has been reported to be 1866 (as of 15 Sept). More than 170,000 students have been affected and there is a crucial need of providing necessary support for children affected from the flood to help them overcome this kind of difficult experiences. Providing lifesaving messages and hygiene promotion for increased protection from various impacts of the disaster is to be carried out for affected children through teachers being trained in how to provide support to their students.

The lack of physical access to economic opportunities, natural resources and social services is highly correlated with incidence of poverty in Nepal. Social and economic vulnerability of disadvantaged groups is often exacerbated by reduced access to road network. One of the major reasons for constraints in rural Nepal is in-adequate or ‘unsafe’ river crossings and lack of its maintenance. The proposed intervention will improve ‘safe’ river crossings by rehabilitating the 137 ‘critical’ trail bridges.
