Development projects in Nepal

Heal Nepal will improve health, dignity and wellbeing of 2,136 people affected by leprosy and lymphatic filariasis (LF) from 11 highly endemic districts in southern Nepal. It will support 1349 Government community health volunteers to use highly effective methods to identify, diagnose, treat and manage leprosy and LF and complications and prevent disability. It will support 1,379,657 community members to develop less discriminating attitudes towards leprosy and LF, and higher tolerance for patients receiving treatment, through a thought-provoking awareness campaign. People at risk of infection will access early diagnosis and preventive prophylaxis. The project will support managing leprosy and LF complications and prevent stigmatising and irreversible disabilities using highly effective clinical innovations. It will create safe spaces for patients to explore inner strengths, improve self-image and wellbeing, and advocate for rights.

The Project will increase the preparedness of Anandaban Hospital to deliver critical COVID-19 care to patients experiencing COVID-19 complications including vulnerable individuals including people affected by leprosy and disabilities and to protect the most vulnerable and health workers from infection. The project will do this by training all staff in COVID-19 response including testing, treating, and managing cases; opening an isolation ward aimed to treat critical patients using ventilators and respirators; providing counselling sessions for both staff and patients struggling with their experience of COVID-19; sharing awareness-raising messages about how to keep safe during the pandemic; and by distributing food and sanitation packages amongst households in the local community.

By the end of this project, by conducting school screening camps and systematic follow-up, we intend to have reduced visual impairment (particularly due to uncorrected refractive error) as a barrier to education for over 308,000 school-going children aged between 6-18 years in Siraha District and Parsa District in Nepal. Teachers, schoolchildren, parents and Community Health Volunteers will have increased knowledge of eye health. Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the most prevalent infectious diseases and significant public health problems in Nepal and continues to pose serious threat to the health of the population and development of the country. Global targets for TB control have been achieved by the Program consistently over the past several years and Nepal has achieved the Millennium Development Goal of reducing the prevalence of TB by 50 per cent. This National Strategic Application grant aims to build on the gains made during the last 13 year of DOTS implementation and ensure the quality assured comprehensive implementation of the Stop TB Strategy. The goal of the Program is to reduce the mortality, morbidity and transmission of TB until it is no longer a public health problem in Nepal. The Program is targeting districts with low TB case detection rates; TB and multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) patients and their close contacts; patients suffering from respiratory illnesses; and public health care providers. This Program consolidates the Round 7 and Round 4 TB grants and the approved National Strategy Application.

Il progetto ha l'obiettivo di favorire il sostentamento di 3500 agricoltori su piccola scala migliorando la produzione agricola e la commercializzazione di sementi e spezie di alto valore commerciale. Verranno realizzate attività incentrate sul miglioramento della produzione di semi di varietà locali che andranno a soddisfare la domanda dei mercati locali permettendo cosi un incremento del reddito medio dei produttori. Altre attività saranno rivolte al miglioramento della produzione, commercializzazione e trasformazione primaria di spezie con potenziale per l'esportazione, come lo zenzero, la curcuma e il peperoncino. Le attività proposte sono state costruite partendo dai bisogni delle popolazioni beneficiarie dei distretti di Kavre e Sindhupalchock in cui si riscontrano principalmente problemi legati alla produzione di semi di qualità, scarse conoscenze dei canali e modalità di commercializzazione e delle tecniche di produzione. Un importante intervento per migliorare la qualità nella produzione delle spezie e incrementare la competitività sui mercati è legato al corretto uso dei fitofarmaci sia di sintesi che naturali. La migrazione da parte di molti uomini verso Paesi esteri per la ricerca di lavoro ha lasciato un vuoto nella gestione familiare e aziendale; una particolare attenzione verrà data al ruolo delle donne nella gestione imprenditoriale, garantendo la partecipazione piena ed effettiva e pari opportunità di leadership a tutti i livelli del processo decisionale nella vita politica, economica e pubblica. Il cambiamento politico post elezioni del 2017 ha provocato un indebolimento delle politiche locali, non preparate all'autonomizzazione. Un processo di governance verrà attivato per supportare gli enti locali e governativi nella costruzione di strategie agricole nel territorio e per rafforzare la partecipazione popolare alle politiche locali.
