SUMMARY Many young (ethnic) women in Nepal are vulnerable to abuse and exploitation due to poverty, cultural traditions and discrimination. The project trains 300 young vulnerable women (aged 18-24) from Pokhara region, Nepal, to obtain decent work in the tourism and hospitality sector. The project aims to socially and economically empower these young women by offering them an accredited market demanded vocational training, a life skills training and will conduct an internship. This 3 year project started in August 2018 by Plan International Nepal in partnership with various local public and private partners who have expertise in training and job placement. Due to Covid-19 the project was extended to March 2023.

A mapping in 2013 of the 219 SRGs formed under the FKLDP project showed that these were playing a key role in improving the livelihood of their members and raising their level of confidence but most of them were still not mature and strong enough. In the absence of a specific dynamic aimed at further building their financial and technical capacities there was a high risk they would collapse. The current project was designed in 2013/4 to build further on the FKLDP project and especially bring the SRGs towards a level of sustainability and facilitate further processes especially strengthen the community structures and relevant government services to enhance the livelihoods of vulnerable families towards more sustainability. The sustainability of the action will rest on the institutionalization of SRGs into 29 village Women Saving and Credit Cooperatives.

The project aims at rehabilitating the monuments and sites of the Kathmandu Valley World Heritage property that suffered extensive damage by the 2015 earthquakes in Nepal. Bajhang is one of the least developed districts of Nepal where almost 50 % of people live below poverty line and suffer from food insecurity. Agricultural productivity is low due to lack of technical knowledge and unavailability of quality inputs and irrigation facilities. There are natural resources available but due to limited knowhow and poor market access people are not able to use them for livelihood improvement purpose. Masta Rural Municipality has patriarchal social structures where women are suffering from gender discrimination and violence and are excluded from decision-making. There are also other marginalized groups such as Dalits and persons with disabilities who are suffering from multiple discrimination and are excluded from decision making process both at home and other public domain. So, efforts are needed to provide women with equal rights and empowerment opportunities for their greater participation and access to resources. The objective of this project is to uplift the livelihoods and food security of the socially and economically marginalized communities of Masta Rural Municipality through improved organic farming practices, value addition and better access to markets, empower women through capacity development and leadership trainings and build more resilient communities through sustainable animal husbandry and developing NTFP-based and other new livelihood opportunities. The project will also promote better hygiene practices and food diversification for improved health and nutrition of the target communities. The project implemented by Sahara Nepal and supported by Swallows supports Finland's development objectives by increasing food security and promoting sustainable use of natural resources and enhancing the rights and status of women and girls. The project will strengthen local partner organization's capacity and role in community capacity building and establishing linkages between communities and local government. The project is expected to benefit directly about 700 poor households. More than half of the direct beneficiaries will be women.

An estimate 5% of the population of Nepal is affected with physical disabilities and their livelihood is affected far beyond the physical handicap itself. They suffer from exclusion and social stigma, which in turn reduces their ability to be socially and economically integrated. Switzerland is recognizing the importance of high quality vegetable seed production through the promotion of private-public partnership among producer cooperatives, NGOs and private seed entrepreneurs in the seed sector. Producing seeds through farmers groups and cooperatives has been a successful approach, which allows a sustainable national seed production. The goal of VSP-III is “to have improved food security and income for the poor and disadvantaged households in remote areas of Nepal”. VSP-III will have two major focuses: 1) farm families from poor and DAGs produce and sell quality seeds; and 2) National Seed Board, Nepal Agriculture Research Council and Department of Agriculture enforce decentralised seed production and quality control through public and private institutions. VSP has proven synergies with other SDC supported agricultural projects, such as the Hill Maize Research Project in promoting seed related market and policy issues and the Home garden project in promoting diversification of vegetable production.

This project aims to help 10,000 women and men with disabilities to find sustainable employment and increase their household incomes. The Nepal earthquake on April 25, 2015 and the subsequent major aftershock on May 12, 2015 caused severe devastation to homes, livelihoods, and private and public properties, including considerable damage to the sanitation infrastructure. The Government of Nepal and many agencies addressed immediate needs but agriculture is still severely affected, pushing the sector into further crisis resulting in low production and abandoning of farms. Through the provision of livelihoods, this project aims to improve the quality of life of the earthquake-affected communities, particularly the most vulnerable populations in the Sindhupalchowk, Kavrepalanchwok and Lalitpur districts. The objectives of the initiative are to build capacities and close existing gaps on both the demand and supply sides in different spheres of economic activities. Project activities include: (1) building capacity and promoting environment friendly and gender sensitive agriculture and dairy production techniques; (2) increasing the employability of working age adults through better awareness of skills that are in demand and training them within skills development institutions; and (3) facilitating the development of micro, small and medium enterprises led by vulnerable women groups targeting economic opportunities in agriculture, livestock, poultry and other non-farm sectors.
