Development projects in Nepal

On 25 April 2015, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal with the epicentre located 81 km northwest of the capital city of Kathmandu. The earthquake impacted 39 out of the 75 districts in the country with 14 districts most affected, left over 8,000 people dead and destroyed over 500,000 houses. With the severe humanitarian impact of the disaster, the Government of Nepal requested for international humanitarian support on 26 April 2015 . The World Food Program (WFP) has been providing logistic operations which includes the Humanitarian Staging Area at the international airport, communication facilities, storage space and office buildings. The Conflict Mediation in Post Earthquake Recovery supports Nepal's long term recovery following the devastating earthquake on 25 April 2015. On 25 April, an earthquake measuring 7.8 struck Nepal near Lamjung north-west of Kathmandu, followed by a 7.3 earthquake on 12 May between Sindhupalchowk and Dolakha districts north-east of Kathmandu. Both earthquakes were followed by multiple aftershocks and landslides with Kathmandu, Gorkha, Lamjung, Sinhupalchowk, Langtang and Everest Base Camp amongst the worst affected areas. In total, 8,219 people were killed and 20,063 injured by the two earthquakes and resulting landslides. Critical infrastructure was damaged and destroyed, including schools, hospitals and roads with around 409,000 homes destroyed and 265,000 damaged. This investment provided $10 million dollars to provide lifesaving humanitarian relief. It provided $1 million to the Australian Red Cross, $500,000 to RedR Australia, $4.5 million to the Nepal Flash Appeals, $4 million to Australian NGOs, and $50,000 to the SPRINT initiative (maternal and child health).

On 18 August the eastern embankment of the Kosi Riverin south-easten Nepal collapsed resulting in major flooding in Nepal and in Bihar in north-east India. Estimates are that 70,000 people are displaced and are in need of shelter and assistance. Nepal is also providing relief for more than 10,000 displaced people from Bihar who have crossed into Nepal seeking assistance. The humanitarian repsonse has been well managed and coordinated by the Government of Nepal at both the central and local level. UNICEF has requested US$1.8 million to provide shelter, safe water, sanitation facilities, hygiene kits, education and child protection.

The unseasonal rainfall in October 2021 has impacted a huge loss in terms of seed production and the livelihood of the Farmer Seed Enterprise (FSE) members that are being supported through the Sowing Diversity = Harvesting Security (SD=HS) Program in the Sudurpaschim province in Nepal. A total of 137 MT of paddy and 3.8 MT of vegetable seed has been damaged. A total of 69 seed producers members from the FSEs has been severely impacted due to the catastrophic climatic events. The seed producers and other local farmers fearfor their food security, as paddy is the main staple crop. Likewise, it is anticipated that there will be an overall shortage of paddy seeds in 2022. The majority of the paddy seeds of early to medium rice varieties were damaged all over Nepal. The loss of the seed production, together with damages to its infrastructure has also caused a negative impact on the sustainability of the FSEs. Theymay fail to recover their investment in the paddy and other crops seeds and are likely to have a shortage of working capital next season for the purchase of foundation seeds and fertilizers. The SD=HS program will support the FSE in procuring enough foundation seeds of paddy for seed production in the coming season. However, there is a need of immediate support in building resilience and improving coping strategies of these farmer communities for the future in the advent of natural disasters. Project proposal With the donation of the Kihle Fund, Oxfam in Nepal and LI-BIRD will support the flood-affected farmers that work with the SD=HS Program in the Sudurpachim province of Nepal. Specific activities will be carried out over the next year to realize the following objectives. Objectives: 1. To support flood and landslide affected seed producers to recover from the damage from the 2021 rainfall 2.
