This project, developed in collaboration with local communities and the Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve (KTWR) located in the eastern Terai landscape of Nepal, aims to initiate conservation activities to ensure the long-term survival of wild Asian elephants and their coexistence with humans in this region. Project objectives include monitoring of Asian elephants, reduction of human-elephant conflict (HEC), outreach and education centered on elephant conservation and HEC, and promotion of alternative livelihoods in HEC-prone areas. Specific project activities include: 1) collection and analysis of dung DNA to estimate the elephant population size in KTWR; 2) formation and training of a community-based HEC response team (CBHEC) including two members from each of 14 Buffer Zone Community Forest (BZCF) groups; 3) CBHEC team monitoring wild elephants and collection of HEC data; 4) promotion of alternative livelihoods such as fish farming to HEC-affected and marginalized groups; 5) development of awareness and education materials and conducting an awareness program via local media including FM radio, street dramas, and sign boards; and 6) human-elephant coexistence (HECx) training delivery to 14 BZCF groups with 35 participants per training; 7) HECx training for 10 local journalists, 40 army personnel, local grade 9-10 school students; and 8) an exposure visit for the CBHEC response team and KTWR staff to Chitwan and Bardia National Parks to observe successful HEC mitigation measures employed in these parks. This project will contribute to the long-term survival and conservation of wild Asian elephants in Nepal by addressing the relatively new and increasing problem of HEC in the Eastern Nepal landscape. This project aims to foster knowledge sharing by recruiting, training and retaining health providers to serve and advocate for Indigenous, rural and remote communities. The University of Calgary (UCalgary) and institutional collaborators in Laos, Mongolia, Nepal, and the Philippines take part through virtual meetings, model site visits, and a multi-day workshop or symposium hosted by Patan Academy of Health Sciences (PAHS) in Nepal. This year-long project seeks to strengthen relationships and professional networks. It also aims to create new opportunities for co-research and co-learning. These topics include gender-inclusive and anti-racist approaches, Indigenous knowledge, recruitment and retention of remote or Indigenous health provider, and climate impacts on vulnerable groups. The proposed second phase of this project will further cover around 20,000 beneficiaries in the same districts, through construction of 15 community water supply schemes and WASH facilities in 10 remote schools covering most vulnerable areas of 4 Rural Municipality (6 VDCs). This phase of project considers the evolving context of these two districts (two years after the earthquake) by taking into account the aspirations of people living in the area. The constraints posed by time and funds during the 1st phase are well-thought-out to ensure that this phase of project would leave no one behind. This project employs participatory methodologies that promote inclusion and community decision making, and is building the capacity of community based platforms including users committee, health management committee and school management committee. Considering the new federal structure in Nepal - Action Against Hunger and its local partners are building dialogue between communities and local government in order to increase government support for WASH sector and investment for sustainability of the WASH structure in the long run. Apart from this, this project will contemplate the integration of WASH and nutrition specially targeting the Severe/Acute malnourished children along with under 2 year old children from the targeted areas by implementing intensive WASH behaviour change related activities. This project aims to improve comprehensive sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) for marginalized women, children and adolescents in Bangladesh, Nepal and Vietnam. Project activities include: (1) training healthcare workers to provide comprehensive sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and nutrition services that are gender-responsive, adolescent-friendly, and culturally sensitive; (2) raising awareness and promoting supportive households and community environments for comprehensive SRHR; (3) strengthening leadership capacities of government bodies to promote policy changes and planning for resilient health systems responsive to the SRHR needs of women, adolescents and children. In Bangladesh, the project is implemented in the underserved urban areas of Chattogram and is expected to reach a total of 150,000 direct beneficiaries, of which 112,500 women, 450 health workers and 185 key stakeholders. This includes government officials, community leaders, youth leaders, and school teachers. In Nepal, the project is implemented in 12 municipalities across 4 districts in Karnali province. It directly benefits 11,700 children with improved nutrition, 82,080 women of reproductive age with improved comprehensive SRH services and 7,860 mother’s group members and their male partners with better SRHR and nutrition knowledge. In Vietnam, the project is implemented in 15 communes in the province of Son La. It benefits 5,200 children under 5, improving health and nutrition knowledge for 10,000 people, and building capacity for 150 health workers and 80 teachers on comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) and communication skills.

Nepal has a variety of development challenges related to the nonfulfillment of human rights that need to be addressed. This Country Programme aims to catalyse and equip the local churches and other civil societies to act as strong societal advocates to ful fil the rights of vulnerable children and youth. In local partnership with AGN churches, Rescue Nepal, Relative Nepal, Transformation Nepal and New Life Service Association, the Country Programme improves children and other beneficiary rights, especially i n regards to their rights to health, education, and adequate living standards. The health component of the Country Programme is addressing the health situation, hygiene and sanitation, and unsafe drinking water that have resulted in the poor health situati on in village development areas of Basauti, Pabera, Gadariya, Pahalmanpur and Udasipur in the Kailali district. The Education component of the Country Programme is addressing the improvement on the quality of basic education, school management skills, know ledge and skills of parents in schools, and village development areas of Ishworpur Muncipality in Sarlahi district, in Ramgorpalpur and Hattisarwa in the Mahottari district, Janakpur Muncipality and in Bateshwar, Bagchaura, Mithileshwar Nikas, Bhutahi Pate rwa, Lagmagadhaghuthi and Tulsiyahi Nikash in the Dhanusha district. The adequate standard of living component of the Country Programme addresses the strengthening of institutional facilities and providing awareness and skills to improve livelihood of the families in Pokali, Ragani, Khijichandeshwori, Khijifalate and Khijikati village development areas of the Okhaldhunga district. The capacity building and advocacy components of the Country Programme are implemented with and within the AGN Church denominati on. On the grass root level, the AGN church partner is a motivated social and development actor throughout Nepal. The Country Programme is expected to directly benefit 57 000 people and 305 000 people indirectly already during the Programme period. Moreove r, the Programme will have many multiplier effects for the development of Nepal.
