This project focuses on the approximately 6300 Lhomi people living in the remote area of the highlands in northeast Nepal Khandbari and Kathmandu. The objectives of this project are threefold: - Increase the number of functionally literate children and adults in both Lhomi and Nepali- Provide awareness raising an d training in hygiene and basic healthcare midwifery veterinary skills- Set up 3 pilot MLE preschoolsA conclusive review of all the national policy papers concerning literacy work in Nepal indicates that the objectives and activities of this project are cl early in line with the strategic plans and policies of the government of Nepal. During a meeting in March 2008 between NELHOS the Ministry of Education and the Non Formal Education Centre (NFEC) the government representatives were very interested in the Lh omi project. Additionally Nepal?s most recent PRSP has been used as a reference point to lend more legitimacy to the project?s activities. There are two targets in the PRSP that are directly taken into account through this project:1. To improve literacy ra tes of people over 15 years old2. To increase literacy rates of women and girls over 15 years oldThe project?s ethos is influenced by international development policy objectives including the eradication of poverty through increased education promotion of women?s empowerment and gender equality use of environmentally friendly technology and the promotion of education as a basic human right. NELHOS seeks to improve the economic and social position of the Lhomi people through providing mother tongue education to Nepal?s Lhomi community in combination with vocational training. The link between education and poverty reduction is widely acknowledged in the international community. The project will also give women and girls a second chance to learn to read and wri te in Lhomi and Nepali. The extension phase is necessary for achieving sustainability of the mobilization processes started during 2010-2012. The established women's groups will be continued but at the same time also other community based thematic groups will be strengthened su ch as water users groups and community forest users groups. Women's participation in elections and local government will be promoted by training.In the environmental health component the financial support will be geared more towards ultrapoor households. T hey will benefit from EcoSan toilet components and smokeless stove components provided by the project. For other beneficiaries support will be mainly technical advice and training for ensuring the proper location and construction of toilets their maintenan ce and utilization of urine and compost in organic farming. This component will be coordinated with the VDC and District level water sanitation and hygiene coordination committees' work aiming at Open Defecation Free Devichaur. The technical inputs are i ntegrated with preventive health awareness through the Female Community Health Volunteers (FCHV) who will continue to be capacitated.The income generation activities (IGA) will be continued and experiences from pilot projects disseminated within Devichaur. Training providing microloans and facilitating the services and financing from District offices will be used to obtain the goal of poverty alleviation with women's role as the main cross-cutting aspect. The environmental sustainability of the new IGA p roducts will be ensured taking into consideration climate change resilience such as erosion risk mitigation.

Bajhang is one of the least developed districts of Nepal where almost 50 % of people live below poverty line and suffer from food insecurity. Agricultural productivity is low due to lack of technical knowledge and unavailability of quality inputs and irrigation facilities. There are natural resources available but due to limited knowhow and poor market access people are not able to use them for livelihood improvement purpose. Masta Rural Municipality has patriarchal social structures where women are suffering from gender discrimination and violence and are excluded from decision-making. There are also other marginalized groups such as Dalits and persons with disabilities who are suffering from multiple discrimination and are excluded from decision making process both at home and other public domain. So, efforts are needed to provide women with equal rights and empowerment opportunities for their greater participation and access to resources. The objective of this project is to uplift the livelihoods and food security of the socially and economically marginalized communities of Masta Rural Municipality through improved organic farming practices, value addition and better access to markets, empower women through capacity development and leadership trainings and build more resilient communities through sustainable animal husbandry and developing NTFP-based and other new livelihood opportunities. The project will also promote better hygiene practices and food diversification for improved health and nutrition of the target communities. The project implemented by Sahara Nepal and supported by Swallows supports Finland's development objectives by increasing food security and promoting sustainable use of natural resources and enhancing the rights and status of women and girls. The project will strengthen local partner organization's capacity and role in community capacity building and establishing linkages between communities and local government. The project is expected to benefit directly about 700 poor households. More than half of the direct beneficiaries will be women.

UN Women´s Women´s Economic Empowerment project aims to enhance the economic situation of especially the most poorest groups of Nepalese women. The participation of Nepalese women in the advancement of the national economy is limited due to insufficient economic resources and low level of education. The project advances the consciousness of the beneficiaries regarding their rights through networks of marginalized women. The project builds up the capacity of the Government of Nepal to follow the conditions of equality in its economic policy both at national and provincial level. Women are often victims of the discrimination. Living in remote rural areas, women's rights are often unsatisfactory. The reasons for the unequal situation can be found in cultural, economic and political factors. Nepal's judicial system is relatively slow and inefficient. The project reduces child poverty and the use of child labor. It increases the number of children regularly attending school and improves child well-being in Sindhupalchowk and Kavre Districts. Children below 18 years of age constitute 42 % of the total po pulation of Nepal and more than a third of Nepalese children live below the national poverty line. Many of them suffer from severe malnutrition. Around 10 % of children do not have access to schooling and about 40 % of children between 5-17 years of age ar e working. Although Nepal has made tremendous progress on educational attainment lately the hard to reach group children in the project location villages of Gimdi Asrang and Thuladurlung of Lalitpur district are out of school the drop-out rate is high and the quality of education and school management is not satisfactory. Effective management of school and education is seriously problematic highly centralized and with inadequate local ownership. Besides many community schools have become hotbeds of corruption with loc al leaders fighting for the appointment of teachers and resources. The overall development objective is to attain improved status of education and literacy in project locations through efficient education governance in active engagement of community local government and participation of children. Immediate objectives of the project are enhanced engagement of local governments in education planning and interventions; improved access to school management and quality of education with capacitated accountable a nd democratic School Management Committees (SMC); and increased engagement of parents community and children in educational planning and implementation.The project will enhance the right to quality education for easily marginalized groups such as dalit and tamang (or janajati) children. Inclusive education is promoted to children with disabilities. These actions contribute also to reduction of inequalities. Majority of the target group children are girls and therefore special attention is paid to consider g ender equality in all activities. Climate sustainability is also taken into account in awareness raising campaigns conducted by child clubs.The project has a comprehensive target group who are key actors on changing school and education environment. It inc ludes the 4100 target children and their parents policy makers civil society actors media schoolteachers SMCs Parents Teachers Association (PTA) members and education officials. These groups are reached through different interventions; such as capacity bui lding collaborative consultations with responsible authorities along with wider awareness campaigns and mass mobilizations. This project aims to help 10,000 women and men with disabilities to find sustainable employment and increase their household incomes. This project aims to improve the well-being and resilience of communities living in earthquake-affected areas of Sindhupalchok, Nepal, by meeting their needs for potable water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services and practices. Supporting increased access to WASH services in Sindhupalchok will not only help the district recover from damage, but also contribute to reaching a level of WASH development that is improved from pre-earthquake levels. Improving access to WASH services in Sindhupalchok will also provide an opportunity to make them more equitable and inclusive, and to ensure that they are resistant to future natural disasters. Project activities include: (1) increasing the equitable access of households and institutions (schools and health posts) to WASH services by rehabilitating and/or constructing appropriate infrastructure; (2) increasing the capacity of individuals and organizations in the community to operate and maintain the infrastructure and to promote the use of good hygiene practices; (3) increasing resilience to future shocks through "build back better", and extending coverage to a greater number of beneficiaries. The project directly benefits 15,290 men, women (51%) and children in Sindhupalchowk, one of the districts most severely affected by the earthquakes. Oxfam Canada is working with Gramin Mahila Sirjansil Pariwar (GMSP), Mahila Atma Nirbharta Kendra (MANK), and Janahit Gramin Sewa Samiti (JGSS) to implement this project.

On April 25, 2015, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal and was followed by a series of large aftershocks. The earthquakes resulted in over 8,700 deaths and 22,000 injuries, 2.8 million displaced and 3.5 million in need of food assistance. In response to the earthquake, Canada established the Nepal Earthquake Relief Fund that committed the Government of Canada to matching eligible private donations to Canadian organizations. While the Government of Nepal and many agencies addressed immediate needs, one year later, there are still critical water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) gaps. Through the provision of WASH services, this project, funded by the Nepal Earthquake Relief Fund, aims to improve the quality of life of the earthquake-affected communities, particularly the most vulnerable populations in the Dhading and Sindhupalchowk districts. The objectives of the initiative are to increase access to potable water, increase use of improved sanitation services and improve the adoption of hygiene practices. Project activities include: (1) providing increased and more equal access to safe and sustainable drinking water and improved sanitation services in communities and institutions; (2) enhancing the capacity of water user committees to construct, operate and maintain drinking water systems; (3) helping district-level stakeholders respond more effectively and appropriately to the different potable water supply, sanitation and hygiene needs of various target groups; (4) building the capacity of communities, schools and health posts to maintain total sanitation; (5) providing increased and more equal access to improved hygiene facilities to individuals and institutions; and (6) improving local knowledge and attitudes about safe hygiene.

Prithvinagar Small Farmer Agriculture Cooperative (PSFAC) is located approximately 10 km South of Bhadrapur close to the border with India. It focuses on the processing and marketing of tea produced by the members. Besides tea processing and marketing the cooperative is also involved in the business of savings and credit services to its members.The cooperative was established in 1995 in response to promote the production of tea by smallholder farmers as the land in the area is very suitable for tea production. The cooperative started with only 25 members and 1250 NPR shared capital. Now the cooperative has 2146 members and shared capital of 18.9 million NPR. Until 1999 the cooperative only collected tea leaves from its members and sold it unprocessed to a private tea factory. However the prices offered by this factory where relatively low and there was no timely payment. Therefore the cooperative created in 2009 the ambition to invest in its own processing factory. The large tea factory was built with government funding support. Total investment was 80 million NPR of which 30 million government grant 20 million loan SKBB (5% interest) and 30 million share capital of the members. Tea processing is new for PSFAC. So far the business has not created significant profit (0 in the 2016-17 fiscal year). PSFAC believes it can increase profit if it can optimize the efficiency of the factory and strengthen its capacity in marketing of the processed tea. By the end of 2018 through the collaboration with Agriterra the cooperative strives to have its profitability of the tea factory increased with 5%.

Agriterra conducted a Company Assessment at SDMPCL in November 2016. In this assessment it became clear that although the cooperative is very motivated to increase profitability for its farmers and has firm ideas on what plans to execute long term planning and feasibility studies upfront are lacking and therefore a clear and shared view on how to reach their plans is missing. The action plan of 2107 is in the line with company assessment recommendations. The cooperative is specialized in provision of credit and saving services and in the collection of raw milk from its 1792 member farmer households (around 7.500 liter per day). It chills the milk in its chilling facility after which it is sold in bulk to dairy processors mainly in and around Kathmandu. SDMPCL furthermore has a small dairy processing facility where it produces small quantities of pasteurized milk yoghurt cheese and ice-cream. Agriterra conducted a company assessment at SDMPCL in November 2016 and it was decided to start a partnership for the year 2017. The overall goal of the partnership is to increase the profitability of dairy farming for the member farmers. This will be achieved through 1) increasing the total milk chilling and processing capacity through investing in a new plant 2) strengthening the marketing/sales capacity 3) increasing the per-cow productivity and 4) increasing provision of affordable and quality feed through investing in a feed factory. This action plan will mainly focus on strengthening the long-term strategic planning capacity the business planning the marketing capacity and the record keeping of farmers
