The project aims to improve the health of poor rural populations in Ramechhap District by providing clean water, sanitation services, and low-smoke cooking technologies for 20,054 women, 16,009 children, and 3,958 men. The project helps communities build and install household toilets, gravity-flow water systems that deliver clean water year-round through public taps, toilets, and smokeless domestic cooking stoves that reduce in-house smoke emission and fuel consumption. It promotes effective use of local resources and involves community participation. The project provides materials and technical support for building low-cost water, sanitation, and cooking facilities. The local communities contribute labour and materials such as sand and gravel. World Neighbours Canada is working in partnership with Tamakoshi Sewa Samiti to implement this project.

As part of the 2009-2015 Volunteer Cooperation Program, Cuso International places 1400 sector-focused skilled volunteers to build the capacity of partner organizations in 26 countries. Volunteer placements are both long- and short-term in nature, and include multiple types of volunteering options: North-South, South-South, South-North, national, Diaspora and business partnerships. Volunteers focus on capacity building (through sharing of knowledge, methodologies, and/or tools relating to specific capacity areas) and enhancing the ability of partners to influence development policy. Partners include local civil society organizations, national and local governments and various networks and associations. Cuso International also delivers a public engagement program in Canada designed to deepen understanding amongst Canadians and create opportunities for informed action on international development issues. Cuso International works in the following sectors: Education, with a particular focus on the inclusion of women and girls in educational options; HIV and AIDS, with a particular focus on the vulnerability of woman and girls, and the rights of people to have access to services; Participation and Governance / Access to Justice, by aiming to empower poor and marginalized groups, especially women, to fulfill rights of access to basic services, and by ensuring access to justice for women and children; Youth Social and Economic Inclusion, by creating opportunities for training and employment for young women and men facing poverty, underemployment and social exclusion; Protecting Environments; Managing Natural Resources, by strengthening community-level governance mechanisms, including the participation of women in community decision-making, aimed at better local management of natural resources; Gender Equality, by incorporating GE as a crosscutting theme throughout all programming components, and through local GE capacity building activities with partners. An amount of $80,622 has been added to the total amount for each of the Volunteer Cooperation Agency programs for CIDA-led program evaluations.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, more than 41 percent of women in Nepal have lost their jobs compared to 28 percent of men. Although entrepreneurship and women-led enterprises in agriculture and forest product value chains are considered an important avenue for women’s economic empowerment in the country, enterprises led by women entrepreneurs/farmers in the rural areas remain excluded from the government’s economic relief packages. While past research has addressed the role of entrepreneurship in promoting women’s economic empowerment, linkages between gender, entrepreneurship, and climate have not been widely explored. Further, resilience-building of businesses that includes multiple factors such as disasters, climate change, and dynamic markets and prices has not been thoroughly applied in Nepal. This project will examine how climate change plays a role in enabling or disenabling women’s economic empowerment in agriculture and forestry. Using participation action research approaches, researchers will co-produce with farmers, enterprise leaders, local women’s groups and champions, local and provincial government, private-sector actors and associations, and financial service providers a model of support for women entrepreneurs that will encourage the adoption of low-carbon practices in the agriculture and forestry sectors. This model will be disseminated through a number of scientific, policy, and media-based outputs. The elements of the model will range from digital and climate-smart technology, financial services, management and marketing training, training on high-potential value-addition activities and more, with the intention of increasing business resilience to climate change. Project interventions include promoting plantations in community forests and private lands by mobilizing community forest user groups and women’s groups. The research team will facilitate the uptake of such practices at the national level by engaging in national/provincial-level dialogues with relevant stakeholders.

Forest-based entrepreneurship is considered an important vehicle to respond to the growing impacts of accelerating climate change. Innovative businesses and entrepreneurship for non-wood forest products will offer low-carbon solutions through locally available technological innovations primarily aimed at sustainable forest management and locally processed forest products. Nepal’s new Forest Act emphasizes the importance of business-oriented forest management that can play an important role for women’s economic empowerment, as it offers a stable source of income. However, empirical evidence is lacking in terms of how women’s economic empowerment can be achieved within the context of nature-based solutions and a low-carbon development agenda. Much of the knowledge on women’s economic empowerment is informed through development programs on micro-credit and community savings programs. The project aims to develop business models and scalable solutions to increase women's access to and control over forest resources and forest-based enterprises, enabling them to make economic decisions for themselves and their households. Through various skill-oriented interventions and support to encourage self-employment, the project further aims to strengthen women’s agency by enabling them to take charge of their life decisions and influence forest management decisions in their favour and in favour of the environment. The project will engage in policy dialogues to ensure women’s representation and leadership in forest management and forest-based enterprises. This will lead to increased sensitivity and accountability of forestry stakeholders to address existing power relations and enhance equity in benefit sharing. It will also allow for women’s knowledge of sustainable forestry management to gain prominence. Project outputs will include research reports, policy briefs, and journal articles on topics of women’s economic empowerment and engagement approaches for inclusive, low-carbon, nature-based solutions. Women’s agency will be supported to sustainably manage forests and run forest-based businesses. The project will ultimately enhance capacities of women’s networks, producer organizations, and forest federations.

The 6th Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) confirmed that forest restoration is expected to help limit global warming and that restoration is biophysically feasible for up to two billion hectares of forests in low- and middle-income countries. The World Leader’s Summit at COP26 announced its first major agreement in which 105 countries covering 85% of the world’s forests committed to act on reducing and reversing deforestation. In South Asia, tree planting and other forms of forest restoration have been conducted by most countries for many years. This has been done primarily to increase the production of timber and non-timber forest products to support livelihoods but also to conserve soil and water resources and biodiversity. However, the economics of forest restoration as a carbon-mitigation option and its distributional impacts on gender and marginalized groups remain poorly understood in the region and globally. This research will examine the economics of different types of forest restoration programs (both plantations and natural regeneration) as nature-based carbon-mitigation options in South Asia. It will explore the impacts of such restoration on rural livelihoods, including distributional effects related to gender and to marginalized communities; examine the effectiveness of financing mechanisms for restoring forests; and, based on these findings, propose appropriate institutional and financial arrangements for scaling up forest restoration in South Asia. The research will be conducted in four South Asian countries – Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and Pakistan. Project outputs will include journal articles on topics related to economics of forest and land restoration and nature-based solutions. Several policy briefs will be produced identifying policy-oriented entry points, to be done in collaboration with national stakeholders and researchers. The research will generate knowledge products and provide an evidence base for informing policies related to forest restoration in the region. It will also develop the research capacity of several junior to mid-career researchers who will be able to conduct similar research in the future.

Students who participate in the program are given increased international understanding and development of methods and working methods when studying at a Swedish university. Through the program, Swedish universities are given a strategic and competitive tool on the global education market. They can offer international mobility programmes and skills development for students from low- and middle-income countries by recruiting specially qualified fee-paying students from these countries. The Peace Rights and Governance programme (PRGP) is designed to support initiatives by state and non-state actors, the sole aim of which is to foster social cohesion and thereby help Nepal to ensure political stability and peace in the medium term. The promotion of conflict transformation is a central objective of all programme components, sub-components and projects at all levels and across all aspects of the PRGP. The program has a total budget of DKK 200 mio. for a period of 5 years from 2014-2018. The program comprises of 3 components: I) Peace building and democratic development II) Local Governance and III) Access to Justice and human rights. Component I will be implemented by the Nepal Peace Trust Fund (NPTF), Election Commission and the multi donor Governance Facility (GF). The purpose of this project is to establish a small community-based not-for-profit business led and operated by women, to cultivate, harvest, weave, laminate, and distribute low-cost corrugated bamboo roofing sheets. The roofing sheets are used by the Habitat for Humanity International - Nepal (HFHI-Nepal) Save and Build microfinance housing program for low-income families. The project aims to make housing more affordable for the lowest-income families by reducing the material cost of roofs and ensuring a continuing supply of roofing sheets for HFHI-Nepal. The project also aims to create income-generating opportunities for low-income families involved in each step of the fabrication process. This is one of two components of a project valued at $493,080. The first component has been completed.
