CGIAR Initiative: Fragility, Conflict, Migration
80%data completeness
Hunger and severe malnutrition are surging in fragile and conflict-affected settings (FCASs), which often struggle to sustain resilient food, land, and water systems (FLWSs). For the 1.5 billion people living in FCASs (1), livelihood challenges and rising food, fertilizer, and input prices (2) are compounded by climate change, unsustainable resource consumption, poor governance, and weak social cohesion (3,4,5). Conflict and forced migration often result from, and further escalate, these challenges. Economic disruptions, such as those caused by COVID-19 and the Ukraine-Russia War, are sparking the risk of food and nutrition crises and poverty and conflict traps. Nearly 670 million people are projected to face hunger in 2030 — 8 % of the world population, and the same as in 2015 when the 2030 Agenda and UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were launched (6).

By mid-2021, 84 million people were forcibly displaced worldwide; 80% of them experience acute food insecurity and high levels of malnutrition (7,8). Migration is an important development tool; it can support livelihoods, build resilience, and protect against fragility and conflict — particularly for youth (9,10). However, migration can strain FLWSs and create challenges for those left behind — especially women facing increased work burdens alongside insufficient decision-making authority and limited access to key assets and services (11,12). Currently, low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) host 83% of the world’s refugees (9). Host communities struggle to provide livelihood opportunities for all; new arrivals often strain local infrastructure and services, put pressure on natural resources and the environment, and increase competition for jobs.

By 2021, most food crises were due to conflict and insecurity (5). On average, 30% of the population in countries facing protracted crises lives in extreme poverty (<$1.90/day), compared to ~6% in LMICs overall (13). Climate change and social inequalities exacerbate conflict. Climate change is rapidly intensifying, increasing pressure on livelihoods and ecosystems (14). In 2020, about 25% of internally displaced people were displaced by conflict and violence, and the remainder by disasters, mostly weather-related (15). Social inequalities further increase risks of hunger and reduce access to benefits from FLWSs, while serving as structural constraints to stability and peace (16,17, 18). Women are disproportionately negatively affected by shocks and crises and have less access to channels of power and influence that could help them benefit from programming addressing these issues. Failure to address interactions between climate stress and human-made crises will escalate both problems.

Governments and development organizations demand evidence to address these complex global crises. Poor governance and weak access to basic services, common features of FCASs, severely limit policy effectiveness and require novel solutions. The recent “Global Food Crisis Report 2022” highlighted the need to fill data gaps so that research and evidence guide proposed policy solutions as well as contextually appropriate implementation (5). And the Committee on World Food Security High Level Panel of Experts has called for a globally coordinated response to both address the humanitarian crisis and build more resilient FLWSs (19).

A systems approach in partnership with those working in FCASs — incorporating women’s and youth’s voices — is needed to devise practical solutions that promote gender equity and social inclusion (GESI). CGIAR is uniquely positioned to generate evidence to support more effective and transformative policies and programming to enhance FLWS resilience in FCASs facing migration-related challenges, and to promote social equity, conflict mitigation, and peacebuilding (20).

UK Aid Direct: A challenge fund designed to support the UK’s commitments to achieving the Global Goals.
90%data completenessFunded by the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID), UK Aid Direct was established in 2014 as a successor to the Global Poverty Action Fund (GPAF), which was created in 2010. UK Aid Direct is a challenge fund designed to support the UK’s commitments to achieving the Global Goals. A Window to Nepal
80%data completenessThe main message for our project is to emphasize the importance and inclusiveness in global development cooperation. As for our case it will be in Lamjung, Nepal. Target Group: Our primary target audience is Danish youth from age of 20-29 interested in global development agenda. The target group will see content from the community in Lamjung, Nepal, where we will document activities through photos and videos for social media, particularly on Facebook and Instagram. We will be writing stories, newsletters, and video editing, benefiting both local and national organizations (DUF, DRCY and NRCS) and enhancing our awareness-raising campaign. It will enable us to create visually appealing content and write stories/blogposts about our project.

Development Visit From Nepal
80%data completenessThe project “Development visit from Nepal Scouts” aims to actualize the experiences we gained during the pilot project "Youth Forum for Change." Here, we learned the importance of being physically together when planning, brainstorming, and connecting. It has proven crucial for the process, and we are confident that this project would be a catalyst for the further development of the overall partnership, allowing many more scouts to engage in the partnership. During the pilot project visit, we developed a timeline for 2024 and partly for 2025 and 2026. When finished, we all agreed that this would have been close to impossible to complete online. Furthermore, our partnership has now finished the initial phase, allowing us as partners to be more honest, direct, and understandable to each other. Therefore, with representatives for the youth, scout centres, activity developers, and the project leaders, we feel well assured that this project/visit will play a key role in ensuring that the dreams encapsulated in the timeline will actually be realised successfully.

Project development, project Junkiri
80%data completenessThe objective of Project Junkiri is to enhance understanding of SRHR (Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights) as well as mental health among students in grades 7, 8, 9, and10 in 3 di?erent districts of Nepal. The increased knowledge of this subject will help in eradicating the taboos and embarrassment associated with SRHR and mental health. This will be achieved through workshops by PSRN-sc volunteers, the establishment of student clubs at the local school, and advocacy e?orts. The primary focus will be on engaging the target group in a variety of activities, including interactive lectures, workshops, and the transfer of knowledge among peers. All initiatives will be tailored based on initial baseline questionnaires. Collaborative e?orts with local stakeholders and individuals of interest will be undertaken to ensure sustainability and gather local support. Additionally, the project will emphasize the capacity building of PSRN-SC and IMCC Nepal, aiming to strengthen our partnership.

Partnership with Nepal Scouts
70%data completenessKFUM-Spejderne in Denmark has a long tradition of longstanding partnerships with foreign scout associations. We have now had a longer search for a possible new partner in South East Asia, and we found a match in capacity and intentions in Nepal Scouts. We have had a few online meetings, and we have agreed to clarify our possibilities in a physical meeting. We, therefore, wish to send a group from Denmark including 3 persons from the planning team to Nepal, and we will then meet with members of Nepal Scouts to set up guidelines for possible future cooperation. We have realised that exchanging values, wishes, and experiences with a possible new partner demands both time and presence, and this we believe can be an option through this Partner Identification trip. We also need to clarify our common understanding of the frame and the options in a possible future partnership, and we find a physical meeting is needed.

We believe that this is a golden opportunity for the selected members from both organizations to learn, interact, network and build capacity for the benefit of the partnership and our future projects. The participants could furthermore get inspired on how to do advocacy and be empowered to become advocates themselves. A team of five participants, two from PSRN-SC and three from IMCC Nepal, will participate in this meeting between people and politicians to debate current political issues. Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) Research and Innovation Fund: VAWG in Conflict and Humanitarian Emergencies
85%data completenessViolence against women and girls (VAWG) is the most widespread form of abuse worldwide: globally, one in three women is beaten or sexually abused by an intimate partner in her lifetime. Under DFID’s £25 million flagship ‘What Works to Prevent Violence’ research and innovation programme, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) is leading on researching the drivers, prevalence, trends over time and effective prevention and response mechanisms for VAWG in conflict and humanitarian emergencies. The evidence being generated is a global public good, intended to help DFID, developing country governments and international partners everywhere to improve the effectiveness of their efforts to prevent VAWG.

Youth Leader Exchange Program in the partnership between Nepal Scouts and KFUM-Spejderne i Danmark
80%data completenessThe exchange programme between NS and KS supports the ongoing partnership project, which focuses on ensuring long-term youth involvement in NS, based on the principle of youth teaching youth. The project pursues this goal by delivering local and provincial training for young scout leaders in key topics such as democratic values, mental health, and local changemaking. YLs in the exchange will act as cornerstones for reaching local groups, conducting trainings, and starting a domino effect whereby they teach others, driving continuous youth empowerment in both Nepal and Denmark and helping to break intergenerational barriers.

Young voices - NNDSWO // Mariagerfjord Youth Council
80%data completenessWith this application we are applying for a Partner Identification in Nepal with NNDSWO. We have been in contact with each other for the last year, and we do have an idea about what a potential future project could look like, as well as a sense of mutual ambitions on behalf of our respective groups - but we still need to work on our foundation, and most importantly match our expectations in a partnership. When we first got in contact last year after a conference about international partnerships, we matched because both our organizations work hard on creating an environment where young people feel heard and where they can express themselves in democratic ways. Both organizations aspire young people to be a part of a community where their participation matters and where they can grow into strong and responsible citizens. All of this happens while they participate in or organize projects for their peers, and that?s where we see a huge potential with an international project like this; what existing projects can we learn from, what can we create with this target group and how can we build an even stronger group of young people in both Nepal and Denmark.

Youth Leader Exchange in Relation to Project Junkiri
80%data completenessThe Youth Leaders (YLs) will be connected to the Junkiri project, a partnership project between the Danish organization IMCC Nepal and the Nepalese organization Physicians for Social Responsibility Nepal Student Chapter (PSRN-SC) concerning Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and mental health. The purpose of the Youth Leader Exchange (YLE) is to strengthen the partnership between the organizations by facilitating capacity building and thereby supporting the project's activities. Just as important, the YLE allows easier communication and the opportunity to work with more rapidly growing results, which is also essential for motivation and sustainability. Recently, issues regarding bank transfer has caused a six-month delay in the beginning of the project. Therefore, the YLE will be supporting PSRN-SC in the process of kickstarting activities. The YLE will last 3 months in Nepal, but the YLs will continue to remain active in the organizations after the exchange.

Youth Leader Exchange 2023
80%data completenessThe Youth Leaders (YLs) will be attached to the partnership project between IMCC Nepal and PSRN-sc on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and mental health. The purpose of the Youth Leader exchange (YLE) is to support the project objectives and activities and to strengthen the capacity and communication within the partnership. The previous YL’s' exchange to Nepal and project activities was cancelled, due to the COVID-19. We consider YLE as a great opportunity for our partnership to develop and for the motivation and communication to flourish again. The YLs will have a special focus on capacity building of members of PSRN in different workshops, and an ongoing evaluation of how the project is going in the ‘new’ project-district; Tanahun, where our teaching, empowerment, and advocacy work takes place. The duration of the YL exchange will be 3 months in Nepal, but the YLs will remain active members of our organizations after the exchange

Inclusive and Resilient Community with Empowered and Engaged People. Youth Leaders.
80%data completenessThe youth leader exchange will support the implementation of the Inclusive and Resilient Community with Empowered and Engaged People (ICE) that starts in May 2023 (annex 11). The project is implemented by Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS) and Danish Red Cross (DRC) in rural municipalities in Lamjung District, Gandaki Province, Nepal. The DRC and NRCS has a long-standing partnership and have implemented projects in the Lambjung District for the past 15 years. The ICE project has a strong focus on empowering youth and vulnerable groups by capacity-building them to position themselves as agents of change in their families and communities and through improving their socio-economic status. Unemployment is a major challenge for youth in Nepal due to the caste system and inadequate economic growth. The youth leader exchange will support the project by strengthening the capacity of key NRCS youth volunteers to support local youth in Lamjung in building personal capacities and initiate youth-led projects to enhance their livelihood.
