Nepal Earthquake Preparedness
80%data completenessResponding to the needs of Nepal as a multi-hazard prone country, where 90% of the population lives in high-risk areas exposed to two or more hazards, such as earthquakes, floods, landslides, snow avalanches, hailstorms, droughts and epidemics, requires a multi-sectoral approach. Disaster risk management (DRM) has a dynamic relationship with the environment – it receives various inputs, transforms these inputs in a certain way, and implements the learning from this process to save lives and improve livelihoods. Though disasters cannot be predicted, disaster preparedness, supported with adequate resources, is seen as the best disaster mitigation strategy. Further building resilience, as the key principle of urban development, rests in ushering a shift from relief to preparedness. The National Urban Development Strategy (NUDS), endorsed by the GoN in 2015, recognizes resilience as one of the five guiding principles for a balanced and prosperous urban future. The NUDS demands integrating resilience in the planning process when building resilient urban areas that are adaptive to current and future vulnerabilities. Implementation and the furthering of a resilience based urban development approach, however, is a shared responsibility of the government, communities, civil society, private sector and individuals. The Model Strategy for Resilient Local Communities, endorsed by MoFAGA in 2018, expects the rural and urban municipalities to develop their own strategy to guide the infrastructure and socio-economic development plans that follow a trajectory to a resilient future. Based on this, the response strategies and approaches proposed include: a) Evidence-based planning b) Responsive disaster governance, integral to urban governance c) Ecosystem fostering shared responsibility in urban DRR and response preparedness d) Local leadership and participation in first phase response e) Preparedness and response plan of urban services integral to urban disaster management planning f) Last-mile connectivity, improving access to information on social safety nets, risk transfer mechanisms, protection and addressing social inequalities g) Fostering evolution of community of practices h) Readiness and coordination in response

Nepal Glacial Flooding- August 2026
80%data completeness· A major flash flood struck northern Nepal on 26 August 2026 following a sudden surge in the Bhotekoshi/Trishuli river system near the China-Nepal border. The districts of Rasuwa and Nuwakot experienced the most severe impacts, while downstream effects extended into Dhading, Chitwan, Gorkha and Tanahun districts. Government authorities have declared affected municipalities disaster crisis-affected areas for a three-month period. Access remains severely constrained due to extensive damage to roads, bridges, power infrastructure and telecommunications networks, with helicopters currently serving as the primary means of reaching isolated communities. Formal assessments remain ongoing and the full scale of the disaster is not yet known. The disaster has also disrupted the Nepal-China trade corridor, affecting customs facilities, markets, hydropower infrastructure and transport links. The Rasuwa border crossing remains closed. Impact and Humanitarian Concerns The humanitarian consequences are significant and continue to evolve as access improves. Preliminary satellite analysis suggests that more than 93,000 people (approximately 18,000 households) may have been affected, although this figure remains unconfirmed. Initial field estimates indicated approximately 10,000 directly affected people in the most severely impacted areas. Reports from partners and authorities indicate: Approximately 165-177 fatalities identified, with figures continuing to change as recovery efforts progress Between 73 and 130 injured people reported, including several patients receiving intensive care treatment in Kathmandu More than 800 people reported missing, unaccounted for, or unreachable Entire villages, market areas and businesses destroyed or severely damaged Houses swept away and families displaced to temporary gathering areas and camps Bodies recovered far downstream from the original impact zone Thousands of people seeking information regarding missing relatives and family members

NSD in Nepal
75%data completenessThe IFRC secretariat and network approach to safeguarding is underpinned by the Fundamental Principles of humanity and impartiality and the principle of ‘do no harm’. Power imbalance is at the heart of safeguarding. Humanitarian workers hold enormous power, which can create the risk of exploitation and abuse. Sexual exploitation, abuse and sexual harassment involves certain groups and individuals within organizations exercising power in harmful ways against those less powerful. The BRC support is critical to strengthen the Safeguarding component of the NSD and 8th development plan and strengthen the safeguarding mechanism within NRCS.

Enabling Actions for Community Health (EACH)
85%data completenessEnabling Actions for Community Health (EACH) by addressing health inequalities through an integrated health-climate resilience programme. Climate change is no longer something that will happen in the future. It is happening now, and people are feeling its effects. Climate change represents the single biggest health threat facing humanity, and one most borne to those who are already marginalized. To address health concerns, we must safeguard communities against the effects of climate change and aim to save lives at times of climate induced disasters. Climate change in Nepal (ranked 4th in the world in terms of the country’s vulnerability to climate change) is already impacting health in a myriad of ways, leading to death and illness from increasingly frequent extreme weather events. The disruption of food systems, increasing the disease burden leading with water borne, vector-borne diseases, non-communicable disease, mental health issues and sexual and reproductive health, and a range of other health issues and determinants of health which are getting magnified many folds at times of any disasters. The lessons learnt from BRC Nepal’s disaster response programme and other studies shows, a silo approach to climate change, disaster preparedness and health does not bear fruit and rather proves counter- productive. Therefore, working at the nexus between health disaster preparedness and climate change adaptation approach is key to ensure an equitable health service delivery even at times of humanitarian crisis.

Nepal Karnali Earthquake November 2023
85%data completenessOn 3 November 2023 in the late evening, a magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck the Jajarkot district resulting in large scale destruction of physical properties with 157 people reported dead and hundreds remaining injured in 11 districts, of which Jajarkot and Rukum West were the worst affected. The epicentre was identified as Ramidanda of Jajarkot districts. According to the National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC), approximately 35,321 households (176,605 people) were affected by the earthquake in the 11 districts. This number is increasing as assessments are ongoing. An estimated 250,000 people have been exposed to hazards and are at risk. This is a largest earthquake to impact Nepal since the 7.3 magnitude earthquake in 2015 and the latest one to hit western Nepal in the past year since November 2022. The impact of the earthquake is expected to be hugely challenging for the most vulnerable in the area, which is already coping with low socio-economic indicators. No cost extension of 3 months (Jan 2025 to March 2025) is requested from NRCS to complete the ongoing recovery constructions of WASH and HP facilities including few associated software activities and final reporting. An additional extension is given to NRCS based on the extension of one of the birthing centre construction timelines, which was beyond the control of the project given the extreme climatic conditions at the field. NRSC has requested to complete the construction by end of June 2025, without additional resources. Once completed, NRCS will provide the reports to be verified by BRC Country Office and initiate the closure of project, accounts.

Climate NbS with Resilient Livelihood in Nepal
85%data completenessThe primary goal of this project is to increase the resilience of most vulnerable and marginalised individuals/ HHs impacted by the Covid-19 through livelihood early recovery and improve their coping capacities to absorb future shocks and stresses. To achieve this goal, the project strategises to work in a twin track approach. Targeting the most vulnerable and marginalised individuals/HHs on the one hand to support them to recover from the impacts of Covid-19 through livelihood start up support, improving access to information, preparing individuals/HHs to devise shock and stress risk mitigation plans and preparing them for future uncertainties. On the other hand, Support will be provided to work with the Cooperative/ financial institutions and local government for the inclusion of left behind individual/ HHs into the larger sphere where they can achieve financial inclusion and access to different risk transfer mechanisms. Thereby, strengthening links between local government and cooperatives/other institutions and addressing underlying systematic issues.

Migration, Displacement & Anti-Trafficking in Asia
80%data completenessAt a regional level, it is our vision that by 2030, the IFRC APRO, and regional National Societies have the capacities, expertise and resources required to support and protect people on the move, and can respond holistically to the wide range of issues which arise from Migration, Displacement and Anti-Trafficking. Migration, Displacement and Anti-Trafficking (MDAT) already feature strongly in the work that we do as a region, in our priority countries of Bangladesh, Nepal and Afghanistan, as well as in Myanmar and Pakistan. We have identified MDAT as a key strategic focus area by the Asia team, aligned to the BRC-wide international strategy, in recognition of the fact that the Asia Pacific region is a fulcrum for international migration, with 107 million migrants, and that 80% of sudden onset natural disaster-induced displacement worldwide occurs in the region. This project will ensure that we are coordinating our work around MDAT ensuring that the sum of our work in the region is greater than its parts, and that we have the necessary resources to enable our partner National Societies to implement projects to best support their communities.

The Justice Project in South Asia
95%data completenessAs countries in South Asia move toward greater economic integration, a range of interconnected challenges to constitutional and human rights guarantees are emerging. These challenges revolve around established norms, gender-based violence, poor justice delivery mechanisms, and inconsistent legal practices and protections. Together, these factors produce distinct patterns of violent conflict, social and cultural inequalities, structural injustices, and governance gaps across the region. The Justice Project brings together prominent documentary film-makers, senior scholars, and practitioners to document the state of justice in the region. It will produce research papers and five films in Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and India on violent conflict and its aftermath; conflict and gender-based violence; justice delivery systems; group conflict, public space, and state order; and land, conflict, and the nation state. These films and papers aim to influence public policy and raise public awareness about the importance of challenging impunity in conflict and post-conflict contexts.
