Nepal Flood and Landslide Response 2024

From 26 September 2024, continuous rainfall lasting three days across Nepal has resulted in widespread flooding and landslides across the country. The heavy rains caused multiple rivers to exceed danger levels, leading to devastating floods that claimed 318 lives to date, affected over 38,000 families, and displaced a further 18,000 people. Further, there has been extensive damage to infrastructure, including roads, bridges, public buildings, and health facilities, as well as businesses and livelihoods. Currently the hardest-hit areas are reported to be in Kavrepalanchok, Sindhuli, and Lalitpur. This specific rainfall event, has been identified as the heaviest ever recorded in Nepal's history. The water flow in the Saptakoshi River reached the highest level in 56 years and Kathmandu witnessed the highest level of rainfall after 22 years, highest ever in valley's recorded history surpassing the previous records set in 2002.
