Nepal Earthquake Recovery Program
95%data completenessThe project aims to improve the economic sustainability and resilience of people affected by the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Nepal on April 25, 2015. The earthquake, followed by a series of large aftershocks, resulted in over 8,700 deaths and 22,000 injuries, 2.8 million people displaced and 3.5 million in need of food assistance, including over 530,000 people who experience acute food insecurity (no access to safe, sufficient and nutritious food). Households involved in farming, small business and wage labour have difficulties recovering their livelihoods, due to a lack of inputs, skilled workforce (temporary migration of household members), and the demands of caring for the elderly and people with disabilities. The project is providing households with agricultural inputs (seeds, fertilizer, livestock and improved technologies); business and financial support for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises; and labour market skills training. Project activities include: (1) rehabilitating small-scale market facilities that were damaged by the earthquake; (2) linking up communities with other service providers on large scale rehabilitation needs to stimulate production and local markets; and (3) providing gender-responsive disaster risk reduction training and organizing awareness-raising in communities (through radio, TV, and community information sharing) to increase the proportion of communities with disaster risk management plans.

Increase production efficiency of tea factory and strengthen marketing strategy
85%data completenessPrithvinagar Small Farmer Agriculture Cooperative (PSFAC) is located approximately 10 km South of Bhadrapur close to the border with India. It focuses on the processing and marketing of tea produced by the members. Besides tea processing and marketing the cooperative is also involved in the business of savings and credit services to its members. The cooperative was established in 1995 in response to promote the production of tea by smallholder farmers as the land in the area is very suitable for tea production. The cooperative started with only 25 members and 1250 NPR shared capital. Now the cooperative has 2146 members and shared capital of 18.9 million NPR. Until 1999 the cooperative only collected tea leaves from its members and sold it unprocessed to a private tea factory. However the prices offered by this factory where relatively low and there was no timely payment. Therefore the cooperative created in 2009 the ambition to invest in its own processing factory. The large tea factory was built with government funding support. Total investment was 80 million NPR of which 30 million government grant 20 million loan SKBB (5% interest) and 30 million share capital of the members. Tea processing is new for PSFAC. So far the business has not created significant profit (0 in the 2016-17 fiscal year). PSFAC believes it can increase profit if it can optimize the efficiency of the factory and strengthen its capacity in marketing of the processed tea. By the end of 2018 through the collaboration with Agriterra the cooperative strives to have its profitability of the tea factory increased with 5%.

Towards realization of paddy processing factory in order to process yearly 15.000 ton paddy from members by 2019
85%data completenessThe Dumarwana Small Farmer Agriculture Cooperative Limited (DSFACL) is located at the central region of Nepal in Bara district. In 1997 the cooperative was registered with 454 members and grown to 9.572 members in April 2017. Out of total members about 8.000 are rice farmers. The livelihood of members largely depends upon the income of paddy. There is demand from members to invest in a rice processing plant and market rice on behalf of the members. DSFACL already purchased the land and constructed a building for the rice processing plant. DSFACL is currently exploring options to finance the investment. DSFACL could gain regular source of income from agri-business other than financial services. The cooperative should focus on organizational development and development of rice processing business. Increasing volume of processed products through improved marketing plans and skills
85%data completenessAnnapurna Dairy Producer Cooperative Limited (ADPCL) and Agriterra started working together beginning of 2017 with the BHAG of Improving the profitability of the cooperative and the profitability of dairy farming for the members through increasing the volume of processed dairy products from 2000 liters today to 4000 liters in 2 years’ time. ADPCL is mainly specialized in the collection chilling processing and marketing of the milk produced by its 600 (484 at the start of 2017) farmer members. The cooperative furthermore has its own feed factory model dairy farm and provides credit and saving services to its members. ADPCL currently has difficulties in using the available processing capacity of its factory. Processing is required to add value to the milk of their members. In 2017 ADPCL in coordination with Agriterra focused on strengthening the marketing of the cooperative with activities such as research for product diversification and market segmentation investment in more attracting branding of shop/sales point and products exchange visit to other relatively successful dairy factories to gain idea on their marketing techniques and many more. In addition to these activities a study on the production cost of farmers was also carried out to identify the efficiency of the activities. As a result the milk intake which was 4000 liters per day at the beginning of 2017 has now increased to 4800 liters similarly processing has increased to 2700 liters from the previous 2000 liters. Still the results are not as expected. The biggest challenge of ADPCL in realizing this ambition remains in lack of marketing of processed products. Processing capacity is available in the current facility but it is not used to its optimum because the cooperative cannot find a sufficient market. In 2018 as well ADPCL and Agriterra will mainly focus on this action plan on strengthening the marketing and organizational capacity of the organization while also paying attention to production at the member level. The cooperative realized the target of marketing 4000 liters milk daily and paid Rs 8 extra on base price. This year 2020 the cooperative has set a target to increase its collection by 7500 liters by increasing productivity and by merging with other similar types of dairy cooperative. Similarly the cooperative has a plan to establish a feed factory to decrease the cost of milk production.

Generating income through improved agribusiness services to members
85%data completenessMain objective is to work towards the financial sustainability of the federation by providing quality services to its members focussing on improved farm profitability and positioning the cooperatives actively in the agricultural value chain . This is done in various ways:1. Marketing support services to six member organisations in which the federation will support for marketing of high quality agri-products: Turmeric powder maize flour and honey. It fits very well with the government programme: one village one product OVOP. The federation will receive a margin on the sales and if this concept works it can be rolled-out in the future to other cooperatives. 2. Support member cooperatives for cooperative output marketing of potatoes in three member cooperatives. These three cooperatives have identified potato as the main commercial crop and are willing to improve the cooperative business by cooperative output marketing and value addition in the future. This year continues to lay a firm foundation at farmers level for commercial farming (record keeping and bench marking) resulting in higher production productivity and profitability and cooperative marketing concepts.3. ENZA Seeds: The second year of cooperation between ENZA Zaden and DAF Makwanpur will be continued in this year too. This comprises technical assistance by ENZA to 45 seed producing farmers of three selected agriculture cooperatives (Gogane Bajrabarahi and Namtar) . Crops selected for the Seeds are chilli (akabare kursani) beans and broad leaved mustard. 4. Organisation development: - improve income through quality services focussing on agri business - develop earning models - improve governance and financial management - linking and networking with input suppliers (potential business deals with input suppliers) and,- access to training and research funds (NUFFIC ESFIM). Increasing productivity and profitability of dairy farming
85%data completenessAgriterra conducted a Company Assessment at SDMPCL in November 2016. In this assessment it became clear that although the cooperative is very motivated to increase profitability for its farmers and has firm ideas on what plans to execute long term planning and feasibility studies upfront are lacking and therefore a clear and shared view on how to reach their plans is missing. The action plan of 2107 is in the line with company assessment recommendations. The cooperative is specialized in provision of credit and saving services and in the collection of raw milk from its 1792 member farmer households (around 7.500 liter per day). It chills the milk in its chilling facility after which it is sold in bulk to dairy processors mainly in and around Kathmandu. SDMPCL furthermore has a small dairy processing facility where it produces small quantities of pasteurized milk yoghurt cheese and ice-cream. Agriterra conducted a company assessment at SDMPCL in November 2016 and it was decided to start a partnership for the year 2017. The overall goal of the partnership is to increase the profitability of dairy farming for the member farmers. This will be achieved through 1) increasing the total milk chilling and processing capacity through investing in a new plant 2) strengthening the marketing/sales capacity 3) increasing the per-cow productivity and 4) increasing provision of affordable and quality feed through investing in a feed factory. This action plan will mainly focus on strengthening the long-term strategic planning capacity the business planning the marketing capacity and the record keeping of farmers
