On April 25, 2015, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal and was followed by a series of large aftershocks. The earthquakes resulted in over 8,700 deaths and 22,000 injuries, 2.8 million displaced and 3.5 million in need of food assistance. In response to the earthquake, Canada established the Nepal Earthquake Relief Fund that committed the Government of Canada to matching eligible private donations to approved Canadian organizations. With funding from the Nepal Earthquake Relief Fund, the project improves the wellbeing of 260,000 people by increasing access to and use of safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services in severely and crisis-hit earthquake affected areas in Nepal. The project trains local government officials and community organizations to respond to the current and future WASH needs of these communities, building resilience for the long-term. Beneficiaries are people unserved or under-served by adequate WASH services and include women, children and people of lower castes. Local governments and community organizations educate over 250,000 people, at least half of whom are women, on how to use WASH services and practice healthy hygiene behaviours. The project advances women's participation as decision-makers on critical WASH and health issues, and ultimately reduces gender inequalities in access to and control over WASH-related resources and benefits of development. The project focuses on the districts of Dolakha, Sindhupalchowk, Nuwakot and Kavrepalanchok. Activities are implemented by a national Water Expertise and Training Centre, hosted by the Environment and Public Health Organization.

This project works in collaboration with local governments in Nepal and Vietnam to make necessary health services and interventions accessible to children less than two years of age and their mothers. Research has identified that the first 1,000 days of a child’s life are critical for intellectual and physical development and lifelong health. Nepal and Vietnam have both made significant strides in reducing infant and maternal mortality and improving access to essential health care. However, inequality in terms of mortality and access to services between different regions and ethnic groups remains a challenge in both of these countries. This project addresses this inequality by working to improve the health care systems of remote regions (Banke district in Nepal) and ethnic minorities in the two countries (the Thai, H’Mong, Xinh Mun, Kho Mu and Khang of Vietnam). Project activities include: (1) improving health management capacity; (2) improving delivery of and access to quality health care and nutrition services; (3) promoting care-seeking; (4) improving nutrition; (5) engaging men and family members to reduce gender-related barriers; (6) providing capacity building to health management teams and health workers directly; (7) engaging and offering education to men and key family members on the importance of maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) and how they can support the health of women and children; and (8) increasing the awareness of Canadians in MNCH issues through public engagement initiatives. The project reach is a total of 38,418 direct beneficiaries in Nepal (18,056 women, 16,671 men and 3,691 children) and 20,611 in Vietnam (10,001 women, 9,172 men and 1,438 children). An additional 9,200 Canadians are reached through a public engagement component. This project is implemented in collaboration with the following HealthBridge Foundation of Canada local partners: The International Nepal Fellowship (INF) in Nepal who is implementing the project in the Banke district, located in the Mid-Western region and the Centre for Creative Initiatives for Health and Population (CCIHP) in Lai Chau province in the remote, mountainous North-West region of Vietnam. Both the Banke district and Lai Chau province are among the poorest areas in the two countries with high mortality rates and the least access to essential health services.

The initiative aims to address several development needs and challenges all linked to underlying poverty and lack of basic services in the remote rural areas in the Ramechap district in Nepal, in the Azabache and Nacaome areas in Honduras and in the Gourma province in Burkina Faso. The overall objective of the initiative is to improve the health of mothers and young children, and thus contribute to reducing maternal and child mortality, through assistance with village and household-scale infrastructure, parent health education and enhanced nutrition and food security. World Neighbours Canada aims to develop and implement training programs for women and men to learn about family planning options, to increase food crop production using sustainable and ecologically sound practices, to promote proper nutrition in infants and young children under two years of age that includes breast feeding promotion, developing and implementing water system plans with participation of users etc. The project proposes to benefit more than 50,000 women, men, girls and boys. World Neigbours Canada is working with Tamakoshi Sewa Samiti (TSS) in Nepal, L’Association d’Appui à la Promotion du Développement Durable des Communautés (APDC) in Burkina Faso, and Vecinos Honduras, in Honduras to implement this project. This project is part of Canada’s commitment to maternal, newborn and child health programming.

According to initial estimations and based on the latest earthquake intensity mapping over 8 million people are affected in 39 of Nepal?s 75 districts. Ove r 2 million people live in the 11 most critically hit districts. The UN Flash Appeal calls for US$415 million to respond to the most urgent humanitarian needs for the next three months. Finland will allocate 500 000 euros in humanitarian assistance to the victims of the earthquake in Nepal through World Health Organisation (WHO).

This project aims to increase the enrollment of disabled children at the pre-school age of 3-6 years in public schools simultaneously with other children of the age group. Identification of children with disabilities or disabling diseases is conducted by e xamining screened children at the eye + ear camps. Around 10 000 children will be provided with rehabilitation and/or simple treatment necessary for school attendance and prevention of additional morbidity. An estimated 75 children with severe visual or he aring disability will undergo a four month rehabilitation in the hospital run by the local partner organization (Children?s Hospital for Eye Ear and Rehabilitation Services CHEERS). To reach these goals volunteers are trained among female health workers te achers and students so they can identify children with neurosensory disabilities or at risk of disability whom will be sent to eye + ear camps for medical evaluation. This contributes to reducing the prevalence of disabling neurosensory conditions which is also achieved by raising awareness of health related to sight and hearing among locals as well as decisionmakers. The project envisages all four aspects of health care delivery; preventive promotive curative and rehabilitative services. The project is to be realized as a three-year pilot in two districts in the Terai region of Nepal. The project is to be realized as a collaboration between a Nepalese NGO called B.P. Eye Foundation which has developed the project idea and PSR Finland which has been contacte d by B.P. Eye foundation to act as a project partner. Based on the previous work of B.P.Eye Foundation this collaborative project also aims to change the Nepalese view on the rights of the disabled remove barriers and stigmas associated with disabilities a nd enable children with disabilities to become productive citizens. For sustainability of the activities the government of Nepal has made a preliminary commitment of implementing these protocols in other districts and eventually the whole of Nepal once the results of the pilot project turn out to be encouraging. B.P. Eye Foundation holds monthly meetings with the government and representatives from Early Childhood Development Center. The project is planned to start in 2015 with project duration of three yea rs.

Ipas works to improve women's and girls' sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) by improving their access to safe abortion and contraception. The organisation is technically strong and a well-respected actor with strong impact and extensive operations at global, regional and national level in about 30 countries. The initiative is central to achieving the expected results within the thematic strategy for Sweden's development cooperation on health and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) 2025–2029. They have proven to have strong impact and large scope globally and nationally. A central starting point for Ipas is that access to safe, legal abortion is critical for women’s and girls’ health, well­being, and is a fundamental human right which make their relevance for gener equality strong. Ipas is assessed to have a very good understanding of the environmental challenges the world is facing and have developed a strong environmental and climate impact analysis to identify opportunities for a positive impact from the contribution on the environment.

Spinal cord injury rehabilitation is a major unmet need in Nepal. In Nepal most cases are caused by falls from heights chiefly from trees (from which poor farmers cut fodder for their stock) and building sites. Road traffic accidents are an increasing caus e of SCI. There are currently only three centres in the whole country offering rehabilitation services to people with spinal cord injuries ? two of the three are in Kathmandu. GPHRC provides services to the Western Development Region and through four INF c linics to the Mid-Western Development Region - a total population of around 8.5 million people. At present large proportion of SCI patients present for rehabilitation with pressure sores. These patients require admissions up to 6 months as the pressure sor e needs to heal before rehabilitation can commence. Patients admitted without pressure sores can complete the rehabilitation within 6-8 weeks. The project ?Improving rehabilitation services for people with spinal cord injury in western Nepal? will be imple mented by International Nepal Fellowship Nepal?s (INF/Nepal) Green Pastures Hospital and Rehabilitation Centre (GPHRC) in collaboration with government and private hospitals in Pokhara Nepal and INF?s Partnership for Rehabilitation (PFR) which supports com munity-based rehabilitation services in the Western Region of Nepal. This project has three major objectives:1. To reduce the incidence of secondary complications in new cases of spinal cord injury (SCI) by providing health education and essential equipmen t to patients in primary (trauma) care 2. To provide better quality rehabilitation services to SCI clients through building a appropriately designed 12 bed SCI ward block at GPHRC 3. To reduce the incidence of infections and pressure sores in SCI patients after their return home and thereby reduce the rate of re-admission and improve their quality of life
