Interburns has developed the first set of operational standards for burns services in Low and Middle Income Countries, guidelines that define the staff skills and knowledge, equipment and operational capabilities required to achieve good outcomes for burn patients, despite limited resources. In Nepal 234,600 people are victims of Modern Day Slavery (MDS/trafficking), with poverty a root cause. CLAMP supports the eradication of forced labour, ending modern slavery and human trafficking; overcoming its physical & emotional trauma (SDG 8.7). Focused in 2 high-risk districts, it will enable the socio-economic empowerment (SDG 1.1) & protection of slavery survivors, vulnerable adolescents & women, reducing vulnerability of potential victims & enhancing survivors’ capacities to rebuild their future. It will create better access to education, skills & economic empowerment. Advocacy, led by Youth Change Agents, will unite Govt. & civil society to build strong protection mechanisms, influencing power structures to bring needs-based policy change. 25.2% of Nepalis live below the poverty line (HDI:145). Political instability and the 2015 earthquakes devastated Nepal, restricting economic growth, throwing a million people into extreme poverty. In Sindhupalchowk district 90% of houses & 557 Govt schools were destroyed, with 3,532 casualties, and similar devastation in Nuwakot district. MDS increased with a 15% spike in human trafficking. Nepal is a MDS source, transit & destination country rating 13th on the Global Slavery Index. 2014-16 Sindhupalchowk police records report 66 women & 37 girls missing & 183 missing (2013-16) in Nuwakot, the majority go unreported. A recent government order to form Committees for Combating Human Trafficking at all Government levels is a huge opportunity

The project will build sustainable capacities within the National Implementation Unit and other relevant entities through their active involvement in each step of the project cycle. The aim is to support Nepal’s efforts in advancing its trade-related development agenda. At the sector level this initiative will play a key role in allowing CP exporters to brand, position and promote their newly designed products, while also creating new market links with overseas buyers. The newly created CP trademark will be promoted in priority markets and domestic industry surveillance established. The project will also contribute to find pilot solutions for adding increased value in the local wool industry by building the necessary capacities at the Nepal Pashmina Industry Association to analyse backward linkages, i.e. the fibre supply situation and to develop business plans and project proposals that address value addition at farm level and linking farmers to processors. It is expected that these will be taken on by other potential donors such as e.g. the ADB-financed HIMALI project. Thus, NPIA will be strengthened to support the sector’s export development in a sustainable manner. The project office will therefore be located in NPIA. The implementing team will work closely with the NIU, the EIF Focal Point, other Governmental entities and support institutions (at national and sector level) to bring about the project’s objectives. In order to assure country ownership and an effective day-to-day support for project related tasks inside of Nepal, a National Project Coordinator will be hired and located within the NPIA. The approach rests in “learning by doing”, with local TSIs and firms taking an active role in delivering project activities. Synergies and complementarities between the current project and other similar initiatives developed by international bilateral and multilateral development agencies will be promoted. As an EIF project, existing local institutions will be given preference as implementing partners, if and where deemed sufficiently effective.

WaterAid has supported 91,450 schoolchildren and teachers gain access to inclusive WASH services enhancing gender equality in 185 schools in Nepal and Pakistan. Women and Girls at school and 14,891 members of the community have been empowered to manage menstruation hygienically and with dignity. This included improved WASH facilities, raised awareness, affordable supply chains for sanitary materials and increased institutional accountability. SDDirect has been commissioned to deliver dedicated and specialist support to three DFID country offices (Nigeria, Rwanda and Nepal) and the DFID Safeguarding Unit (SGU) in three phases. They include; 1) a diagnostic phase to understand the needs of each country office and develop an action plan to address these; 2) a support phase in which remote and in-country support is provided to country office staff to support the implementation of the action plan, and 3) a learning phase where lessons learned are gathered and analysed and shared in the form of short guidance or information notes for the SGU. In order to facilitate open and constructive conversations with country offices on their approach to safeguarding on SEAH, SDDirect will adapt and pilot their Safeguarding Diagnostic1 tool with senior management and safeguarding leads in three DFID country offices. The diagnostic is a platform-based digital tool developed to help leaders of organisations working in the international development sector to feel confident that they have robust systems, processes and resources in place to safeguard against sexual exploitation, abuse and harassment: in the workplace, in their programmes and in their partnerships. Senior SDDirect SEAH facilitators will lead this process to create a safe space for senior management to discuss issues around SEAH and identify a roadmap to strengthening their approach. Using the diagnostic tool will allow SDDirect to explore sensitive issues beyond those of working with partners to co-develop a useful action plan which addresses the key issues at hand. SDDirect will embed a knowledge and learning approach across our work to ensure all lessons and good practice are captured to inform the development of the guidance/information notes outlined in the ToR.
