This Research Support Project (RSP) seeks to enhance the knowledge base on the interactions between women’s paid and unpaid work through two complementary activities. First, it will consolidate evidence from a four- country study (India, Nepal, Tanzania and Rwanda) supported under the Growth and Economic Opportunities for Women (GrOW) program on how women’s child care responsibilities interact with their economic prospects. Second, it will foster policy dialogue on ways to support women achieve better balance between paid and unpaid work. The GrOW project, which was successfully completed, was instrumental in highlighting women’s daily struggle to balance unpaid care and paid work, often leading to depletion of their physical and emotional capacities, and negatively impacting on their children. This research adopted a broad definition of care to include direct care of people as well as indirect household tasks such as care of animals, and collection of fuel and water. While this approach was valuable in understanding the social organization of care, disaggregating the various care tasks is important to provide the basis for targeted policy action. This RSP aims to fill this gap by analyzing the data to understand the difference in the extent and type of depletion that women face because of direct care of people, and the indirect care tasks. The resulting working paper and policy brief will shed light on the extent to which provision of childcare facilities can facilitate women’s engagement in the paid labour force, and thereby assess their importance as a policy solution across various country contexts.

At the sixth regional meeting of the 14 South Asian think tanks in Bangkok in December 2016, the participants collectively highlighted the strong need for capturing and documenting the transformative role that Think Tank Initiative (TTI) support has played in their organizations over the past seven to eight years. Furthermore, there was strong will to ensure that the stories of organizational change in the lives of think tanks and their directors are communicated to help demonstrate the value of core support in strengthening think tanks in ways unparalleled by project funding, particularly in creating conditions for long-term sustainability, strengthening organizational systems, and enhancing the effectiveness of think tanks. IDRC is supporting this initiative to document and share experiences and lessons learned, in collaboration with the Institute for Social and Environmental Transition – Nepal. The directors of all 14 TTI-supported institutions will contribute to a publication detailing how core support from TTI helped them strengthen research quality, operational effectiveness, and policy engagement. The Think Tank Initiative (TTI) is a multi-funder program dedicated to strengthening independent policy research institutions, or think tanks, in developing countries. The program aims to enhance their ability to provide sound research that informs and influences policy. This second TTI phase (2014‒2019) will fund 43 institutions, helping them consolidate their role as credible development actors in their countries, and in some cases, regionally, and internationally.

Given the importance of strong leadership, management, and governance in building and sustaining effective organizations, the think Tank Initiative (TTI) has developed an Organizational Leadership, Management, and Governance Fund for TTI-funded institutions. This fund provides an opportunity for think tanks to take advantage of additional support from TTI to strengthen their leadership, organizational management, and governance to position them for organizational resilience and long-term sustainability when TTI ends in 2019. The fund aims to complement the core funding and other supplementary support provided to achieve their long-term organizational change objectives. Each TTI-supported organization prioritized its greatest needs against three categories for targeting support: executive directors or senior management; staff who have been identified in succession planning processes in the face of impending executive director retirement or departure; and new or existing board or assembly members with a need/desire to strengthen their governance skills and competences. A powerful 7.8 Richter magnitude earthquake hit central Nepal on April 25, 2015, causing over 8,700 deaths and more than 22,000 injuries. Hundreds of thousands of homes were flattened, some 15,000 government buildings and 288,797 residential buildings were destroyed, and some 8,000 schools and 1,000 health facilities were damaged. Over half of Nepal's districts were affected by this event. Through this project, the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) will carry out rehabilitation and reconstruction in Dhungentar, Nepal, covering about 100 severely affected households. The focus of the intervention includes restoration of housing and public buildings, restoration of basic infrastructure such as roads and irrigation systems, and development of local capacity for better disaster mitigation and risk management through knowledge gathering, sharing, and dissemination. The goal is to build resilient mountain community model villages, with climate- and earthquake-resilient housing, and to ensure sustainable livelihoods. Communities will be actively involved in the project through their village development councils. Training will be provided to community members in sustainable rehabilitation and reconstruction in a post-disaster scenario. The efforts will help the mountain communities to better prepare for climate and non-climate hazards and the knowledge generated through the project will be shared throughout the region for better disaster planning and preparedness.

The project aims to enhance women and girls’ social and economic growth. It focuses especially on women from Dalit and most vulnerable groups by relying on proven poverty reduction measures.
