SUMMARY Many young (ethnic) women in Nepal are vulnerable to abuse and exploitation due to poverty, cultural traditions and discrimination. The project trains 300 young vulnerable women (aged 18-24) from Pokhara region, Nepal, to obtain decent work in the tourism and hospitality sector. The project aims to socially and economically empower these young women by offering them an accredited market demanded vocational training, a life skills training and will conduct an internship. This 3 year project started in August 2018 by Plan International Nepal in partnership with various local public and private partners who have expertise in training and job placement. Due to Covid-19 the project was extended to March 2023.

In 2016 a learning agenda will be worked out and this will focus on the continuous assessment of the assumptions underlying the programme’s design and Theories of Change. Learning will also be an outcome of the programme’s evaluation agenda. A baseline will be conducted in the first half of 2016 and a mid-term review and final evaluation are scheduled for 2018 and 2020 respectively.

A mapping in 2013 of the 219 SRGs formed under the FKLDP project showed that these were playing a key role in improving the livelihood of their members and raising their level of confidence but most of them were still not mature and strong enough. In the absence of a specific dynamic aimed at further building their financial and technical capacities there was a high risk they would collapse. The current project was designed in 2013/4 to build further on the FKLDP project and especially bring the SRGs towards a level of sustainability and facilitate further processes especially strengthen the community structures and relevant government services to enhance the livelihoods of vulnerable families towards more sustainability. The sustainability of the action will rest on the institutionalization of SRGs into 29 village Women Saving and Credit Cooperatives.

The Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN) brokers practical and tailored knowledge on climate and development for use and application in decision-making in the Global South. This project supports CDKN’s ability to engage with existing climate change adaptation research projects through strategic events designed to build partnerships that can enhance the impact of existing research at country, regional, and international levels. CDKN will be supported to engage with existing IDRC projects, such as Climate Resilient Cities in South America and the Collaborative Adaptation Research Initiative in Africa and Asia, as well as research projects funded by the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. This research project will enhance CDKN’s ability to connect these different initiatives, support the application of their knowledge, contribute to the sustainability of their results, and generate linkages to emerging initiatives. A key set of activities that will be supported is a series of regional workshops intended to enhance partnerships between CDKN and existing or recently closed research projects in Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia. The primary focus of these workshops will be to co-develop partnership proposals for impact-oriented work that will be carried out through support from CDKN. This will therefore enable CDKN to pursue a robust and transparent engagement process to identify research partners where opportunities for further impact and scalable solutions are high. Selected research partners will then engage in a “co-delivery” process where CDKN will offer in-kind knowledge management, communications, and engagement expertise in the delivery of different interventions, in addition to funds to support activities. This research support project will also provide resources for strategic events at the global level to convene key partners and leverage important partnerships in response to opportunities that arise on the global stage.

(Nepal): The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MOEST) has demonstrated its commitment to ensuring equitable access to quality education for all students by meeting targets set under the 2016-2021 School Sector Development Program (SSDP). The MOEST and development partners are developing a new five-year sector plan. In USAID's Education Sector Wide Approach (SWAp) Phase 1, the activity supported one disbursement linked indicator (DLI) that targeted improving primary grade learning outcomes through scale-up of the National Early Grade Reading Program (NEGRP). In SWAp Phase 2, under the new SSDP, USAID will use FY 2020 resources to expand its support to at least two DLI result areas, continuing to incentivize the GON's implementation of targeted interventions to improve primary grade learning outcomes and to ensure that the most marginalized groups have access to education - even in the face of crisis. Potential Phase 2 DLIs include financing targets to expand the NEGRP to the remaining 38 districts, implementing "pro-poor" school interventions that advance Nepal's Equity Strategy, and supporting the continued development of digital distance learning..SWAp Phase 2 advances the USAID key Basic Education Policy priorities: "Children and youth gain literacy, numeracy and social-emotional skills that are foundational to future learning success" and "the most marginalized and vulnerable, have increased access to quality education that is safe and relevant." This assistance will allow the USG to better harmonize foreign development efforts with other donor partners, demonstrate commitment to the principles of aid effectiveness, and achieve financing and Journey to Self-Reliance metrics.
