Increasing volume of processed products through improved marketing plans and skills
85%data completenessAnnapurna Dairy Producer Cooperative Limited (ADPCL) and Agriterra started working together beginning of 2017 with the BHAG of Improving the profitability of the cooperative and the profitability of dairy farming for the members through increasing the volume of processed dairy products from 2000 liters today to 4000 liters in 2 years’ time. ADPCL is mainly specialized in the collection chilling processing and marketing of the milk produced by its 600 (484 at the start of 2017) farmer members. The cooperative furthermore has its own feed factory model dairy farm and provides credit and saving services to its members. ADPCL currently has difficulties in using the available processing capacity of its factory. Processing is required to add value to the milk of their members. In 2017 ADPCL in coordination with Agriterra focused on strengthening the marketing of the cooperative with activities such as research for product diversification and market segmentation investment in more attracting branding of shop/sales point and products exchange visit to other relatively successful dairy factories to gain idea on their marketing techniques and many more. In addition to these activities a study on the production cost of farmers was also carried out to identify the efficiency of the activities. As a result the milk intake which was 4000 liters per day at the beginning of 2017 has now increased to 4800 liters similarly processing has increased to 2700 liters from the previous 2000 liters. Still the results are not as expected. The biggest challenge of ADPCL in realizing this ambition remains in lack of marketing of processed products. Processing capacity is available in the current facility but it is not used to its optimum because the cooperative cannot find a sufficient market. In 2018 as well ADPCL and Agriterra will mainly focus on this action plan on strengthening the marketing and organizational capacity of the organization while also paying attention to production at the member level. The cooperative realized the target of marketing 4000 liters milk daily and paid Rs 8 extra on base price. This year 2020 the cooperative has set a target to increase its collection by 7500 liters by increasing productivity and by merging with other similar types of dairy cooperative. Similarly the cooperative has a plan to establish a feed factory to decrease the cost of milk production.

Increase cooperative vegetable business through own outlets and other sales channels
85%data completeness2018Agriterra has started collaboration with AACL in March 2017 which gave opportunities to know each other better. During 2017 Agriterra mainly focused on study of cooperative vegetables marketing strengthening institutional capacity in managing agricultural cooperatives and on financial management. As follow up of advisory services in 2017 AACL has started mushroom and tomato packaging with cooperative logos and provision of vegetable price list daily on the notice board. AACL has formed separate management team for cooperative marketing. These activities have resulted in increased sales turnover of vegetable marketing. Currently AACL is only able to absorb approximately 2 percent of total production of its members through one cooperative outlet. AACL has made a plan to add two new outlets and use different sales channels for increasing the sales turnover. AACL would like to further position itself in the vegetable marketing by adding value to the products of its members with own branding logos and packaging. In order to do that there is need to further improving financial management and increase capital to support the marketing plans. AACL has formulated BHAG to develop and implement a sustainable and cooperative vegetable output marketing modality for the 150 commercial farmer members. The proposed activities are made to achieve sales turnover of cooperative vegetables marketing of Rs.25 million in 2018.2019Since 2017 Agrtiterra has been providing advisory support to AACL. In 2017 Agriterra focused on study of cooperative vegetables marketing strengthening institutional capacity on cooperatives and financial management. In 2018 the collaboration focused on institutional capacity development on strategic financial management internal capitalization governance and market development. AACL developed 3 years business plan for vegetable marketing. These efforts resulted to increase sales turnover by 2 times compare to 2017. The sales turnover was NPR 10 million in 2017 and NPR 20 million in 2018.AACL would like to further position itself in the vegetable marketing by professionalizing its marketing services and adding value to the products. AACL has set goals to achieve sales turnover of NPR.66 million by own main and branch outlets home delivery and delivering to restaurant hotels and hostel. The proposed action plans are targeted to support AACL for achieving its goals.

Realizing packaged tea export to the Netherlands
85%data completenessThe 2017 action plan is focussing on realization of the first shipment and total export of around 1000 kg packaged tea. The direct export to the Netherlands should become an example for other cooperatives in the country. Agriterra will provide training and capacity building on strengthening the cooperative and its business activities. The program will provide a practical learning trajectory on exporting tea for all stakeholders involved. This can bring significant development to the farmers and the region as the activities can be duplicated in the future.

Generating income through improved agribusiness services to members
85%data completenessMain objective is to work towards the financial sustainability of the federation by providing quality services to its members focussing on improved farm profitability and positioning the cooperatives actively in the agricultural value chain . This is done in various ways:1. Marketing support services to six member organisations in which the federation will support for marketing of high quality agri-products: Turmeric powder maize flour and honey. It fits very well with the government programme: one village one product OVOP. The federation will receive a margin on the sales and if this concept works it can be rolled-out in the future to other cooperatives. 2. Support member cooperatives for cooperative output marketing of potatoes in three member cooperatives. These three cooperatives have identified potato as the main commercial crop and are willing to improve the cooperative business by cooperative output marketing and value addition in the future. This year continues to lay a firm foundation at farmers level for commercial farming (record keeping and bench marking) resulting in higher production productivity and profitability and cooperative marketing concepts.3. ENZA Seeds: The second year of cooperation between ENZA Zaden and DAF Makwanpur will be continued in this year too. This comprises technical assistance by ENZA to 45 seed producing farmers of three selected agriculture cooperatives (Gogane Bajrabarahi and Namtar) . Crops selected for the Seeds are chilli (akabare kursani) beans and broad leaved mustard. 4. Organisation development: - improve income through quality services focussing on agri business - develop earning models - improve governance and financial management - linking and networking with input suppliers (potential business deals with input suppliers) and,- access to training and research funds (NUFFIC ESFIM). Improved marketing services to its members

Increasing productivity and profitability of dairy farming
85%data completenessAgriterra conducted a Company Assessment at SDMPCL in November 2016. In this assessment it became clear that although the cooperative is very motivated to increase profitability for its farmers and has firm ideas on what plans to execute long term planning and feasibility studies upfront are lacking and therefore a clear and shared view on how to reach their plans is missing. The action plan of 2107 is in the line with company assessment recommendations. The cooperative is specialized in provision of credit and saving services and in the collection of raw milk from its 1792 member farmer households (around 7.500 liter per day). It chills the milk in its chilling facility after which it is sold in bulk to dairy processors mainly in and around Kathmandu. SDMPCL furthermore has a small dairy processing facility where it produces small quantities of pasteurized milk yoghurt cheese and ice-cream. Agriterra conducted a company assessment at SDMPCL in November 2016 and it was decided to start a partnership for the year 2017. The overall goal of the partnership is to increase the profitability of dairy farming for the member farmers. This will be achieved through 1) increasing the total milk chilling and processing capacity through investing in a new plant 2) strengthening the marketing/sales capacity 3) increasing the per-cow productivity and 4) increasing provision of affordable and quality feed through investing in a feed factory. This action plan will mainly focus on strengthening the long-term strategic planning capacity the business planning the marketing capacity and the record keeping of farmers

Strengthening JCCU in supply chain and market positioning of oranges
85%data completenessJCCU has committed itself during a strategic planning workshop to address 3 strategic objectives in the coming 3 years: 1) establishing a modern Junar tree nursery 2) building the management and governance capacity of the primary cooperatives and 3) increasing the sourcing and marketing of Junar from the primary cooperatives. The main focus in 2017 will be on ambition 2 and 3. In order to ensure a regular sourcing to the factory members must be committed and understand the added value of the cooperatives. Many members are unaware of cooperative principles, management and marketing. Record keeping at farm level in order to know the cost price but also to compare production levels and improve this. FACT will be introduced to few active leaders to improve the effectiveness of their lobby. FACT can be applied in preparing a good business plan to apply for funding for the high tech nursery. Financial management to be further improved by recruiting a stronger manager/accountant and follow up the action plan.

Towards sustainable member services
85%data completenessAgriterra and CTCF have been cooperating on different fields since 2012. From its inception in 2010 CTCF has developed into a cooperation with 98 member coops (representing 6000 tea farmers) with a combined market share of 25% in the orthodox tea in Nepal. CTCF has become a strong and well known federation both internally as well as in the field of lobby and advocacy and service provision to its members. The cooperation between Agriterra and CTCF in 2017 will have an evaluative character. Having worked together for 5 years it is time to evaluate and see if continuation of cooperation in the future is required and what this cooperation should be focussing on (which business case/BHAG to be realized). Apart from evaluative activities the Action Plan will bring specific focus towards youth involvement in CTCF and its members. This Action Plan will also assist CTCF in testing paid service provision to its members through having them pay for the Agriterra Basic FMT.
