Enhancing Livelihoods of Smallholder farmers in Central Terai Districts of Nepal (ELIVES)

Elives project is implemented in Bara, Rautahat, Sarlahi and Mahottari districts. These districts rank lowly in the overall Human Development Index (HDI) as well as in Human Poverty Index (HPI). In spite of potential in goat and vegetable sub-sectors, productivity remain low in these districts. Private sector service providers are largely absent outside of the district head quarters and towns making it practically impossible for poor households to take advantage of commercial agricultural opportunities. There are weak links with key value chain actors, such as input suppliers, service providers and output buyers. Smallholder farmers are unable to make informed decisions due to lack of information on technology and markets. Project interventions will support government's effort to reach to smallholder farmers in commercial livestock and agricultural development through local capacity building and strengthening market linkages.;

Poverty is the core problem of the project areas and beneficiaries, resulting problems that include food insecurity and widespread malnutrition, illiteracy and lack of access to employment opportunities and inaccessibility to basic facilities such as water and sanitation. Most Dalits are deprived of their basic human rights such as citizenship and land-rights. Similarly most children are deprived even of primary education, and there are cases of high early drop-outs. Caste and gender based discriminations against women and socially excluded people still prevail thus depriving them of public service delivery such as income generating, health, education, and access to social security benefits. The project, that covers three districts, Morang, Sarlahi and Chit wan, aims to tackle these problems with the objective that the poor and excluded people are socially, economically and legally empowered.

NEPALI FAMILIES IN LOCKDOWN RISK STARVATION. Despite being a rural region, many villagers in Sarlahi (southern Nepal) don't own land & cross the border to India for work. Now with no work, no savings, the monsoon arriving; the people are at great risk. Although the Gov't is providing some general relief, it's not enough. Our focus is on the vulnerable: pregnant women & women with newborn or young children. We provide basic nutritious food - rice, lentils, mustard oil, chick peas, flour, ghee.

F.a: BETTER CHILDHOOD BETTER FUTURE IN NEPAL

Nepal has a variety of development challenges related to the nonfulfillment of human rights that need to be addressed. This Country Programme aims to catalyse and equip the local churches and other civil societies to act as strong societal advocates to ful fil the rights of vulnerable children and youth. In local partnership with AGN churches, Rescue Nepal, Relative Nepal, Transformation Nepal and New Life Service Association, the Country Programme improves children and other beneficiary rights, especially i n regards to their rights to health, education, and adequate living standards. The health component of the Country Programme is addressing the health situation, hygiene and sanitation, and unsafe drinking water that have resulted in the poor health situati on in village development areas of Basauti, Pabera, Gadariya, Pahalmanpur and Udasipur in the Kailali district. The Education component of the Country Programme is addressing the improvement on the quality of basic education, school management skills, know ledge and skills of parents in schools, and village development areas of Ishworpur Muncipality in Sarlahi district, in Ramgorpalpur and Hattisarwa in the Mahottari district, Janakpur Muncipality and in Bateshwar, Bagchaura, Mithileshwar Nikas, Bhutahi Pate rwa, Lagmagadhaghuthi and Tulsiyahi Nikash in the Dhanusha district. The adequate standard of living component of the Country Programme addresses the strengthening of institutional facilities and providing awareness and skills to improve livelihood of the families in Pokali, Ragani, Khijichandeshwori, Khijifalate and Khijikati village development areas of the Okhaldhunga district. The capacity building and advocacy components of the Country Programme are implemented with and within the AGN Church denominati on. On the grass root level, the AGN church partner is a motivated social and development actor throughout Nepal. The Country Programme is expected to directly benefit 57 000 people and 305 000 people indirectly already during the Programme period. Moreove r, the Programme will have many multiplier effects for the development of Nepal.

F.a: No Child Left Behind

The communities in the region are poor, marginalised and politically unstable. Education and skill levels are low and child labour and child marriages are common. School dropout-count is high. The earthquake of 2014 caused massive infrastructural destructi on in some areas (e.g. schools were destroyed) and significantly weakened the income of families. Education can bring hope and open possibilities for children, youth and the communities. The project has improved 19 state schools’ teaching by providing su pport for teaching, materials and teaching facilities. The project has supported youth through vocational course centres’ training. Especially challenged communities’ girls have been given preparing education, which enables a later transition to a norm al primary school. Equivalent work will continue in 2016. The project is expected to improve vulnerable children’s, youth’s and communities’ quality of life. The purpose is to increase the knowledge and skill levels of communities, where the project acts (in Bhaktapur, Sarlah and Rukum). The project results in children’s improved primary education and youth’s vocational skills in the project area. Beneficiaries of the project are children, youth, their parents and teachers. Fida partners with a lo cal NGO, Transformation Nepal (TFN).

USC Canada - Program 2010-2015

This program contributes to enhanced food security, nutrition and resilience to climate change through agro-ecological practices and seed improvements in nine countries by: (1) significantly increasing the production of food for 15,000 households; (2) stimulating sustainable economic growth by promoting community economic activities for 7,000 households; and (3) increasing household income by an estimated 20%. The nine countries and regions of intervention are Bangladesh (Thakurgaon and Nilphamari), Bolivia (Potosi) , Ethiopia (South Wollo zone), Honduras (Yoro, Intibucá, Francisco Morazán and Comayagua), Mali (Douentza and Mopti), Senegal (Podor), Burkina Faso (Soum), Nepal (Kaski, Banke, Makawanpur, Sarlahi, Humla and Lalitpura) and Timor Lest(Aileu and Manatuto). Key activities include: (1) training partner staff in monitoring and conducting baseline studies and assessments; (2) strengthening the capacity of community seed banks by creating additional seed banks, providing training in plant breeding, and control of post-harvest losses; (3) improving agricultural infrastructure for soil and water conservation, providing training on cropping methodologies and promoting agroforestry; (4) training farmers in post-harvest processing, providing training on micro-enterprises and strengthening the capacity of farmers' and women's associations; (5) undertaking gender analyses and gender audits with all USC partners to provide them with leadership training and to promote women-led agricultural production and income-generating activities for women; and (6) engaging Canadians by hosting several hundred community events across Canada, developing short videos, and producing publications related to food security. Frame agreement with NGO (Fida Int.)

Water and Sanitation Project WATSAN. The project purpose is the decreased incidence of intestinal deceases in rural communities in target VDCs in Kailali District, Far West, Nepal. Fida's partner, the New Life Service Association (NSA), will have project a ctivities like awareness raising and capacity building of communities on health, sanitation and hygiene and water supply and toilet construction. It will use community mobilization and work in close coordination with partner agencies. The project will form Health and Sanitation groups (called WASH groups) in each VDC to address the root causes (contaminated water, poor sanitation and personal hygiene practices) of the main problem, high incidence of the intestinal diseases.
