Nepal’s mountain food system faces severe challenges due to loss of agrobiodiversity, out-migration, feminization of agriculture, low productivity, and growing climate risks. Poor diets, gender barriers, and weak local solutions further limit resilience.Target Group & Area: 2,000 households in three municipalities of Bajura and Mugu.Overall Objective: Empower women smallholders and CSAs to build resilient local food systems. Empowering women and community-based organizations of Western Mountain for a resilient local food system (EMPOWER)
The proposed project aims to strengthen resilient local food systems by empowering women smallholders, marginalized communities, and civil society actors in Budhinanda Municipality (Bajura district, Sudurpaschim province) and Khatyad Municipality (Mugu district, Karnali province). Over a period of 44 months (November 2025 - June 2029), the project will directly benefit 1,600 smallholder farming households (3,200 individu-als), primarily women-headed, by improving their food, nutrition, and income security through the adoption of agroecological farming practices. The project will also work with elected representatives, extension workers from local and provincial govern-ments, and community-based organizations, including producer groups and resource user associations, to build institutional capacities for sustainable agricultural govern-ance. Implemented in partnership with LI-BIRD (Local Initiatives for Biodiversity Re-search and Development), KCDC (Karnali Community Development Centre), and FWEAN (Federation of Women Entrepreneurs Associations of Nepal), the initiative will ensure effective execution, local ownership, and long-term impact.

RISE Bajura: Resilient, Inclusive, Sustainable Development and Empowerment of Farmers and Vulnerable Households
This project employs the Community-Led-Inclusive-Development Approach (CLIDA), a participatory approach focused on empowering target community groups through self-determination and responsibility for project activities. The aim is for 1.600 households to develop sustainable self-help structures within the target group by working closely with communities and focusing on their needs. This includes planning, implementation, observation, and evaluation with active participation from village communities, utilizing various Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) tools. The project targets two main objectives: improving living conditions through sustainable agricultural practices and income-generating activities, and enhancing resilience against disasters and climate change impacts. Actions include training in climate-smart agriculture, sustainable livestock farming, disaster preparedness, and climate change adaptation. Additionally, preparatory measures like assessments and various training sessions are carried out to enhance the knowledge and skills of the target groups, thereby sustainably improving their living conditions and resilience.

SDG 4, Just Education: Ensure equal access to education and opportunities for children and young people from remote communities in Bajura Nepal.
In Nepal, recent federal restructuring coincides with educational challenges: while primary school enrollment is high (91%), secondary rates are low (38.9%). Access to education remains limited, depriving children of prospects. Poverty, unemployment, and unproductive agriculture plague project communities, hindering Nepals development. In Bajura district, despite a 97% enrollment rate, learning outcomes for grade 8 students range from 41-46%. This project aims to address these disparities by providing equitable education and development opportunities, aligning with SDG 4. The goal is to ensure 10,000 children and 2,100 youth in 13 communities have equal access to quality education and future opportunities. Subgoals include establishing monitoring mechanisms, enhancing schooling systems, and strengthening rural economies to reduce vulnerability among children and youth. Structural and social sustainability will be achieved through community involvement and the establishment of Civil Society Organizations.

Improving Maternal Health and Reducing Malnutrition for 1,000 women and their children in Bajura, Far West of Nepal
Province 7 is one of the most remote and poorest areas of Nepal (HDI: 0.31) with 62.5% of population living in poverty (CBN) and ranked most vulnerable in Nepal (DFID 2017). The project will aim to reduce maternal mortality rates and improved local structures of maternal healthcare provision for 1,000 women in two communities in Province 7 - Rugin and Bichhaya - and improve agricultural productivity and production and income for vulnerable women, by empowering 625 women through productive resources, inputs, confidence, and knowledge. The project will support poor and vulnerable families (including infants) to have better access to safe, nutritious food all year round and improved resilient agricultural practices which will strengthen capacity for adaptation to climate change, extreme weather, and other disasters.

Supporting frontline health worker in remote Nepal
PHASE Nepal works in remote and isolated areas of Nepal supporting free primary health care, livelihood and education improvement, supporting PWDs, disaster risk reduction, research and now Covid-19 response. PHASE Nepal provides direct health services to more than 90,000 patients/year in remote Humla, Mugu, Bajura, Sindhupalchok and Gorkha. Thus, this project aims to save lives of health workers and community workers by supporting their treatment incase of possible infection & complications.

Shakti Phase 2 - Empowering Civil Society in
The project aims to contribute to a sustainable and empowered civil society by mobilising marginalised people in three districts in rural Nepal - Kanchanpur, Kailali and Bajura. The project focuses on education and empowerment in the areas of Gender Equality and Social Inclusion; Youth; Climate Resilience and Food Security. It will also seek to strengthen the capacity of local and provincial governments to make and implement policies that reflect the needs of constituents relating to these areas.

Joint Recovery Action Plan (JRAP) - Western Nepal Earthquake
According to the National Emergency Operations Centre, 62,000 homes were affected (35,455 partially damaged and 26,557 completely damaged) by the earthquake which struck Jajarkot district in Karnali province in November 2023. To address the temporary shelter needs of affected families by three earthquakes of Jajarkot, Bajura and Doti, the Government of Nepal endorsed the Temporary Housing Construction Procedure for Earthquake Affected Households and pledged 1.41 billion Nepalese rupees to support reconstruction and recovery efforts. Through this project, the International Organization for Migration is supporting the Government of Nepal in creating an enabling environment for the long-term recovery and reconstruction of earthquake-affected communities. The project is contributing towards the empowerment of affected populations and those in vulnerable situations to become agents of their own recovery through rebuilding their homes as well as reducing future disaster risks.
