(Nepal): Peace Corps (PC) returned to Nepal in late 2012. USAID and PC signed a five-year Inter-Agency Agreement (IAA) in December 2011. USAID is contributing $10 million to the IAA. This innovative program utilizes a whole-of-government approach, bringing together the comparative advantages of PC and USAID in implementing two Presidential Initiatives: Global Health Initiative (GHI) and Feed the Future (FTF).In FY 2014, $500,000 in GHI funds and $135,000 in FTF funds will be used for volunteer support costs, volunteer infrastructure support, and staff salaries. Thirty-five new Peace Corps Volunteers (PCVs) will join the previous 50 in Nepal in FY 2014. The PCVs will support both FTF and GHI objectives. PCVs will work in nutrition, business, and agriculture, and may also support capacity building, monitoring and evaluation, and community assessments.

(Nepal): The DFID-USAID co-funded Family Planning (FP) activity aims to generate new knowledge for better evidence-based programing that improves the health of women and children in Nepal through increased access to and utilization of FP methods. The activity specifically focuses on service delivery for women from vulnerable groups with low contraceptive prevalence and high fertility. Using FY 2015 funds, the project will support the testing of innovative models in six different districts with the purpose of gathering evidence for scale-up of effective FP interventions. Some examples of models to be tested include the introduction of interpersonal communication through female community health volunteers, roving providers to the poorly-staffed public health facilities and the provision of comprehensive FP services through mobile camps. Furthermore, this co-funded project will help support upcoming DFID-supported Nepal Health Sector Support Program in coordination with government counterparts.

A powerful 7.8 Richter magnitude earthquake hit central Nepal on April 25, 2015, causing over 8,700 deaths and more than 22,000 injuries. Hundreds of thousands of homes were flattened, some 15,000 government buildings and 288,797 residential buildings were destroyed, and some 8,000 schools and 1,000 health facilities were damaged. Over half of Nepal's districts were affected by this event. Through this project, the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) will carry out rehabilitation and reconstruction in Dhungentar, Nepal, covering about 100 severely affected households. The focus of the intervention includes restoration of housing and public buildings, restoration of basic infrastructure such as roads and irrigation systems, and development of local capacity for better disaster mitigation and risk management through knowledge gathering, sharing, and dissemination. The goal is to build resilient mountain community model villages, with climate- and earthquake-resilient housing, and to ensure sustainable livelihoods. Communities will be actively involved in the project through their village development councils. Training will be provided to community members in sustainable rehabilitation and reconstruction in a post-disaster scenario. The efforts will help the mountain communities to better prepare for climate and non-climate hazards and the knowledge generated through the project will be shared throughout the region for better disaster planning and preparedness.

The project aims at strengthening rights and safety of forest trade union members and individual wood workers and improve the ecological values of the forests in Nepal by educating wood workers on sustainable forest management and biodiversity protection. Increased memberships of forest trade unions and safe working conditions is also an objective. Capacity of government agencies and trade unions to advocate for policies is increased to support sustainable forestry to address climate change.Effective partic ipation of the formal and informal forestry sector workers and local communities is essential to ensure successful implementation of sustainable forest management and biodiversity protection. Many workers working under community forest user groups (CFUG) a re unorganised which has resulted in problems with health and safety issues and rights of workers. In addition workers lack knowledge on sustainable harvesting and other forest management methods.

This project represents emergency support of $10M to contribute to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF)/United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Global Programme to End Child Marriage’s COVID-19 response at the country level. Project activities include: (1) supporting the program to empower young, feminist innovators to address child marriage by partnering with innovation hubs. These hubs bring these innovators together from across Africa and South Asia to enhance their understanding of the issues around child marriage and aggregate their creative abilities to address child marriage; (2) supporting the program to launch a global communications campaign on boys and gender equality, using the lens of COVID-19 and child marriage. This campaign engages men and boys to act as champions of gender equality and to interrogate and transform harmful masculinities from an early age; and (3) supporting the program to ramp up its use of digital technologies to address child marriage by developing a coherent, uniform digital system to ensure strategic oversight, adaptability, interoperability and scale in addressing the challenges of ending child marriage in the context of COVID-19. These digital platforms facilitate the faster learning and program adaptation needed to inform Global Programme actions in the path to ending child marriage by 2030. The project supports the UNICEF/UNFPA Global Programme to End Child Marriage, a multi-donor joint United Nations program aimed at eliminating child marriage in 12 countries in Africa and South Asia where the rates of child marriage are among the highest: Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Mozambique, Nepal, Niger, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Yemen and Zambia. The project focuses on enabling girls at risk of child marriage to choose and direct their own futures, through activities aimed at the empowerment of girls, with the ultimate aim to prevent child marriage and support already married girls. The COVID-19 pandemic is disrupting programmers aimed at ending harmful practices. UNFPA estimates this could lead, over the next decade, to 2 million additional cases of female genital mutilation/cutting and 13 million additional cases of child, early and forced marriage that would have been otherwise averted.
