Evidence for innovation: project development grants
95%data completenessThis initiative supports seven project-development grants and one capacity-strengthening consultancy. The project-development grants were recommended for funding through the Evidence for Innovation call for proposals. This funding opportunity has two streams: full research grants (‘direct-entry') and project-development grants (‘stage 1’). The project-development grants were introduced in the expectation that some teams would benefit from additional time and support to undertake background studies and networking activities before submitting an in-depth proposal. The overall aim of this funding opportunity is to generate new evidence on the performance and the distributional impacts of innovation-support programs for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), with a geographic focus on the least-developed countries. This integrative approach to understanding both the firm/economic performance of SME-support programs as well as their social impacts integrates equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) analyses. It stems from an interest in promoting evidence-informed decision-making as well as understanding how economic policies can support social-development goals (such as gender equality). The research findings are expected to demonstrate the strengths and weaknesses of targeted and non-targeted EDI initiatives for the SME sector and the collaboration with innovation agencies is expected to influence their policies and practices. Development grants will support teams in two or more countries to undertake preliminary analysis of innovation-support policies or programs for the SME sector, network with public and/or private agencies implementing SME-support programs and develop a concrete proposal for an in-depth study. During this 12-month period, the responsible officer and consultants supported through this grant will organize peer-learning webinars and methodological training to support teams developing their research proposals. This project supports teams in Bangladesh, Benin, Cambodia, Ghana, the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Nepal, Senegal, Somalia, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Enabling near-term results for climate adaptation in Africa and Asia beyond CARIAA
75%data completenessThe Collaborative Adaptation Research Initiative in Africa and Asia (CARIAA) aims to build the resilience of poor people to climate change by supporting a network of consortia to conduct high-calibre research and policy engagement in hot spots in Africa and Asia. It is jointly funded by the UK’s Department for International Development and IDRC. This project seeks to address results that are at risk with the formal closure of four consortia. After four-and-a-half years of activity, each consortium has achieved impressive results, generated knowledge, and built capacity intended to enhance the resilience of vulnerable people living in climate “hot spots”. This final project is intended to build on these results. Specifically, Advance Services for Social and Administrative Reforms, India (ASSAR) will work with the Ethiopian government to manage the invasive Prosopis plant species. Deltas, Vulnerability and Climate Change: Migration and Adaptation, UK (DECCMA) will develop proposals for climate financing and modelling for adaptation in deltas. Himalayan Adaptation, Water and Resilience, Nepal (HI-AWARE) will analyze the drivers of migration in Nepal, assess the feasibility of scaling up pilot adaptation solutions in Pakistan and Bangladesh, and scope efforts to address heat stress in India and Pakistan. Pathways to Resilience in Semi-Arid Economies, UK (PRISE) will sustain its coordination function to seize policy windows with local government to enable private-sector adaptation in semi-arid lands.

Philanthropy-funded awards for emerging researchers
80%data completenessIDRC is committed to developing a critical mass of trained and experienced researchers and innovators in Canada and in low and middle-income countries to promote sustainable and inclusive development globally. Over the years, a number of individuals (former IDRC governors and employees) have gifted and designated funds in support of awards for emerging researchers. This project will provide the mechanism by which philanthropy-funded awards will be managed by the Centre. In general, these awards will fund academic study and related opportunities for masters and doctoral students. Over a five-year period, the project will support awards for up to 28 Canadians and developing country nationals. This project will complement IDRC’s annual awards project. Both the philanthropy-funded and IDRC-funded awards will nurture emerging leaders in the application of research to solve development problems, providing a new generation with opportunities to participate actively in crafting innovative solutions to real world problems, and to build careers in relevant fields.
