Philanthropy-funded awards for emerging researchers

IDRC is committed to developing a critical mass of trained and experienced researchers and innovators in Canada and in low and middle-income countries to promote sustainable and inclusive development globally. Over the years, a number of individuals (former IDRC governors and employees) have gifted and designated funds in support of awards for emerging researchers. This project will provide the mechanism by which philanthropy-funded awards will be managed by the Centre. In general, these awards will fund academic study and related opportunities for masters and doctoral students. Over a five-year period, the project will support awards for up to 28 Canadians and developing country nationals. This project will complement IDRC’s annual awards project. Both the philanthropy-funded and IDRC-funded awards will nurture emerging leaders in the application of research to solve development problems, providing a new generation with opportunities to participate actively in crafting innovative solutions to real world problems, and to build careers in relevant fields.
