The Canadian International Food Security Research Fund (CIFSRF) supports applied research projects that address food security challenges in the developing world. It is jointly funded, coordinated, and implemented in collaboration with the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and uses the combined expertise of both organizations to maximize the impact of the projects funded. Through investments in applied research, the CIFSRF contributes to the development of more productive, sustainable, and gender-sensitive agricultural techniques for women subsistence farmers, with the ultimate goal of making food sources more secure and accessible, and the food produced more nutritious, for poor households - particularly for women and girls, who face the heaviest burden of chronic hunger and malnutrition in developing countries. One of the objectives of the CIFSRF is to ensure that the results generated by the research funded are used to inform food security policies, programs, and on-the-ground development activities. Partnership is also an important aspect of the CIFSRF. All the research projects funded are jointly conducted by Canadian and developing country-based organizations, such as academic institutions, private sector organizations, civil society organizations, or research institutions. These partnerships harness Canada's expertise in agriculture and nutritional science and combine it with first-hand knowledge and expertise in developing countries, to maximize the benefit for development activities.

The project aims to improve the health of poor rural populations in Ramechhap District by providing clean water, sanitation services, and low-smoke cooking technologies for 20,054 women, 16,009 children, and 3,958 men. The project helps communities build and install household toilets, gravity-flow water systems that deliver clean water year-round through public taps, toilets, and smokeless domestic cooking stoves that reduce in-house smoke emission and fuel consumption. It promotes effective use of local resources and involves community participation. The project provides materials and technical support for building low-cost water, sanitation, and cooking facilities. The local communities contribute labour and materials such as sand and gravel. World Neighbours Canada is working in partnership with Tamakoshi Sewa Samiti to implement this project.

As part of the 2009-2015 Volunteer Cooperation Program, Cuso International places 1400 sector-focused skilled volunteers to build the capacity of partner organizations in 26 countries. Volunteer placements are both long- and short-term in nature, and include multiple types of volunteering options: North-South, South-South, South-North, national, Diaspora and business partnerships. Volunteers focus on capacity building (through sharing of knowledge, methodologies, and/or tools relating to specific capacity areas) and enhancing the ability of partners to influence development policy. Partners include local civil society organizations, national and local governments and various networks and associations. Cuso International also delivers a public engagement program in Canada designed to deepen understanding amongst Canadians and create opportunities for informed action on international development issues. Cuso International works in the following sectors: Education, with a particular focus on the inclusion of women and girls in educational options; HIV and AIDS, with a particular focus on the vulnerability of woman and girls, and the rights of people to have access to services; Participation and Governance / Access to Justice, by aiming to empower poor and marginalized groups, especially women, to fulfill rights of access to basic services, and by ensuring access to justice for women and children; Youth Social and Economic Inclusion, by creating opportunities for training and employment for young women and men facing poverty, underemployment and social exclusion; Protecting Environments; Managing Natural Resources, by strengthening community-level governance mechanisms, including the participation of women in community decision-making, aimed at better local management of natural resources; Gender Equality, by incorporating GE as a crosscutting theme throughout all programming components, and through local GE capacity building activities with partners. An amount of $80,622 has been added to the total amount for each of the Volunteer Cooperation Agency programs for CIDA-led program evaluations.

The Uniterra international voluntary program aims to contribute to poverty reduction and sustainable development through national and regional sectoral approaches in 13 developing countries with the support of 2,500 volunteers. The Uniterra program focuses on strengthening the capacity of 225 key organizations that work in private sector development, governance, health, and education. More specifically, the program focuses on improving access to health and education services, markets, and political participation; fostering equality between women and men; engaging organizations in political dialogue in specific sectoral issues; and raising awareness among Canadians of national, regional, and global issues with regards to private sector development, governance, health, education, and equality between women and men. The Uniterra program is jointly operated by the Centre for International Studies and Cooperation (CECI) and World University Services of Canada (WUSC).

Students from countries on the OECD/DAC's list of recipient countries studying at a Swedish university can apply for scholarships to finance their education in Sweden. Students who participate in the program are given increased international understanding and development of methods and working methods when studying at a Swedish university. Through the program, Swedish universities are given a strategic and competitive tool on the global education market. They can offer international mobility programmes and skills development for students from low- and middle-income countries by recruiting specially qualified fee-paying students from these countries. The funds are used to reduce the whole or some part of the tuition fees for the students who are awarded scholarships. The scholarship program stimulates and facilitates mobility, international cooperation and contributes to the supply of skills.

The Peace Rights and Governance programme (PRGP) is designed to support initiatives by state and non-state actors, the sole aim of which is to foster social cohesion and thereby help Nepal to ensure political stability and peace in the medium term. The promotion of conflict transformation is a central objective of all programme components, sub-components and projects at all levels and across all aspects of the PRGP. The program has a total budget of DKK 200 mio. for a period of 5 years from 2014-2018. The program comprises of 3 components: I) Peace building and democratic development II) Local Governance and III) Access to Justice and human rights. Component I will be implemented by the Nepal Peace Trust Fund (NPTF), Election Commission and the multi donor Governance Facility (GF). Component II will be implemented by Ministry of Federal Affairs and local development. Component III will be implemented by National Human Rights Commission, the Governance Facility and other partners. Different interventions designed under the PRGP will contribute to peace-building, improve the effectiveness of the state and increase partnerships with civil society.

The purpose of this project is to establish a small community-based not-for-profit business led and operated by women, to cultivate, harvest, weave, laminate, and distribute low-cost corrugated bamboo roofing sheets. The roofing sheets are used by the Habitat for Humanity International - Nepal (HFHI-Nepal) Save and Build microfinance housing program for low-income families. The project aims to make housing more affordable for the lowest-income families by reducing the material cost of roofs and ensuring a continuing supply of roofing sheets for HFHI-Nepal. The project also aims to create income-generating opportunities for low-income families involved in each step of the fabrication process. This is one of two components of a project valued at $493,080. The first component has been completed.

The project "Enhancing Access to Justice for Women in Asia and the Pacific. Bridging the gap between formal and informal systems through women's empowerment" is a five-year program with an overarching goal to enhance access to justice for women in both formal and informal justice systems. he project is built on previous experiences The objective of the project is to build on previous global and regional work on Access to Justice for women e.g. The work and experience made by ICJ under the European funded ASEAN program. During the project ICJ consolidated network of lawyers working on Human rights cases in the region and established relationships with courts across the region. ICJ initiated regional judicial dialogues with senior judges in South East Asia. One important outcome was the development and adoption, in 2016, of the Bangkok General Guidance on Applying a Gender Perspective for judges. ICJ has also experiences from intervening in emblematic cases regarding the interpretation of and application of laws that expressively discriminate against women and LGBT people. The project also builds on the experiences made in the regional project UN Women CEDAW South Est Asia regional program 2011-2016 focusing on knowledge generation and exchange, stock taking and priority setting for advancing the implementation of CEDAW in the region. The overall goal was reduced discrimination against women in South-East Asia and enhanced South-East Asia regional processes that facilitate CEDAW implementation. In addition, the UN Office of the High Commissioner for human rights (OHCHR) regional office has the global mandate for human rights and supports justice processes that are consistent with international law and good practices and brings a comparative advantage in supporting judicial reform efforts to protect human rights. OHCHR has expertise and experiences to address issues related to womens access to justice. The UN Women project included important research in several countries with plural legal systems and concluded that there are substantial gaps in women's access to justice in countries with plural legal systems. In addition, negative gender stereotyping and discriminatory attitudes among judges, prosecutors and police were pervasive. Discriminatory legislation is another serious obstacle for Women's access to justice. The project has a geographical focus on 6 countries in Asia and Pacific: Indonesia, Philippines and Timor Leste, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Pacific Island Countries. Against this background the A2J project has he project has three specific outputs: 1.) Advocacy is conducted to promote the adoption of domestic laws and court decisions in the target countries consistent with international human rights law and standards, including CEDAW 2.) Gender discriminatory attitudes and stereotyped behaviours towards women are acknowledged and addressed by formal and informal justice providers in the target countries. 3.) Grassroots women's organizations and community-based women's organizations are empowered and well positioned to document, monitor, liase and facilitate interaction with formal and informal justice providers. The programme results are based on the theory of change that if there is: i. A legal enabling environment for women to access gender-responsive justice is created by advocating for laws and court decisions that are consistent with international human rights law and standards, including the CEDAW; ii. Plural justice systems are gender-responsive because gaps between formal and informal settings are bridged through increased understanding and awareness of justice system providers of womens rights; iii. Grassroots womens organizations and community-based womens organizations are empowered and well positioned to document and facilitate interactions between and with formal and informal justice providers, and their resilience is enhanced to build a just and sustainable future; Then, womens access to justice will be enhanced in the Asia Pacific region.
