The Climate Leadership and Action for Indigenous Women in Nepal (CLAIWN) project seeks to enhance climate rights of Indigenous women and girls in 2 of 3 districts (Sindupalchok, Kavre and Ramechhap) of the middle hills region of Nepal. Project activities include: (1) training Indigenous women and girls as climate action leaders; (2) preparing gender-integrated and Indigenous women-led Community Adaptation Plans of Action (CAPAs); (3) creating a mentorship and support program for Indigenous women and girls climate leaders between Canada and Nepal; (4) establishing an innovation fund to support local climate action initiatives; (5) training of government officials on gendered effects of climate change and barriers to climate action for Indigenous women and girls; (6) creating policy recommendations for gender-responsive and inclusive climate action; and (7) implementing advocacy activities to promote CAPAs and gain local government approval and support. Working closely with Centre for Indigenous Environmental Resources (CIER, Canada) and local partners, Himalayan Grassroots Women’s Natural Resource Management Institution (HIMAWANTI), Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (NEFIN),and the National Federation of Indigenous Women (NFIW), the project benefits 4,000 Indigenous community members, particularly the Tamang People. The project addresses the ecological, livelihood and wellbeing threats that climate change poses to the rights of Indigenous communities in Nepal. This project aligns with the Government of Nepal policies on climate change notably its National Action Programme of Adaptation (NAPA).

This project supports the United Nations Population Fund and United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund Global Programme to End Child Marriage, a multi-donor joint United Nations program. It aims to eliminate child marriage in 12 countries in Africa and South Asia where the rates of child marriage are among the highest: Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Mozambique, Nepal, Niger, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Yemen and Zambia. The project focuses on enabling girls at risk of child marriage to choose and direct their futures, through activities aimed at bringing about change in the empowerment of girls, with the ultimate aim to prevent child marriage and support already married girls. This project seeks to improve access and the quality of reproductive health services for adolescent girls and women of reproductive age in the Kalikot district of Nepal and the Son La province of Vietnam. The project aims to improve health and gender equality (GE) among adolescent girls and women and reduce incidences of child marriages, a form of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV). The project takes an integrated and holistic approach to empower local adolescent girls and women to exercise their reproductive rights and ensure access to health and reproductive services when needed. Project activities include: (1) conduct participatory-action research (PAR) to enable the identification of community-driven solutions; (2) engaging with local community leaders and health system stakeholders to build the capacity of local health workers, administrators, teachers, young people, and other relevant community actors; (3) promoting the quality of reproductive health services and their use by girls and women, especially for marginalized populations; (4) tackling cultural norms that enable SGBV, including child marriages; (5) consult with beneficiaries in the communities to understand their specific need and respond with appropriate curriculum and training on planning, delivering, monitoring and evaluating gender-responsive health services; and (6) developing appropriate curriculum and train teachers & student facilitators to advance the comprehensiveness and effectiveness of the current reproductive health education programs within the communities. The project expects to reach approximately 1,600 adolescent boys and girls (800 in school and 800 from the community) and directly influence 2,500 women and 2,500 men, members of 60 community groups in Vietnam. In Nepal, the project expects to reach approximately 4,500 adolescents women, 2,000 adolescents man adolescents, 30 local health workers, 45 women community health volunteers, 45 community committees, and 25 religious leaders. This project works in partnership with International Nepal Fellowship (INF) in Nepal and the Center for Creative Initiatives in Health and Population (CCIHP) in Vietnam.
