Hand Washing Project in Nepal

The pilot program will be part of the ongoing emergency WASH program and will target mothers that have been displaced by the earthquake in Kathmandu Valley. The program will be comprised of 3 phases: PHASE 1: Formative baseline study. The formative baseline analysis will be comprised of focus group discussions, observations and a questionnaire survey. The objectives are to assess levels of hand washing with soap (HWWS) knowledge and practice among mothers as well as to understand motivators and barriers around HWWS at critical junctures. The most appropriate communication channels for reaching mothers in a peri -urban context will also be identified. PHASE 2: Materials development and pre -testing. The findings from phase one will feed into the development of targeted HWWS behaviour change strategy and set of promotional materials. The materials will be pre -tested with mothers to ensure they are accepted and understood, attractive, engaging, and motivating. Materials will be shared with relevant stakeholders. PHASE 3: Implementation, Monitoring & Evaluation. The hand washing program will be implemented over a 4 week period. During this time the program will be monitored and mothers will have an opportunity to provide and receive feedback. An endline evaluation will be conducted post intervention.
