The project aims to increase agricultural productivity and food and nutrition security by enhancing the use of reliable and affordable energy solutions for production, irrigation, processing, storing, packaging, and marketing of locally grown farm products. Extensive use of energy-based and climate smart technology will help the farmers reduce the cost of production and increase local food supply throughout the year. At the same time this will also support women and marginalized groups through economic empowerment through job creation while contributing to environment.Focus will also be on support to increase cultivation of local indegenous crops thar are climate resilience. Increased crop diversity a focus. The project will be implemented by UNDP in 11 local governments of Sudurpashchim and Karnali provinces (5 in Karnali and 6 in Sudurpashchim) in close collaboration with the local governments and in partnership with Alternative Energy Promotion Center (AEPC), WFP, ICIMOD and other local partners (like LiBird, CEAPRED, SAPROS etc) working on food security issues. To some extent the project builds on earlier investment in the renewable energy sector in these districts. The intended impact is Improved Food and Nutritional Security of the communities of selected areas of Nepal. There are three outcomes that are expected to contribute to the overall impact.
