Gender and Adolescence: Global Evidence (GAGE) is a nine-year (2015-2024) mixed methods longitudinal research and evaluation study. It follows the lives of 20,000 adolescents in six low- and middle-income countries in Africa (Ethiopia and Rwanda), Asia (Bangladesh and Nepal) and the Middle East (Jordan and Lebanon). GAGE is generating evidence on ‘what works’ to enable adolescent girls and boys to emerge from poverty and fast-track social change for young people, their families and communities. It aims to explore what strategies are most effective in transforming girls’ and boys’ lives at specific junctures in adolescence.

Elives project is implemented in Bara, Rautahat, Sarlahi and Mahottari districts. These districts rank lowly in the overall Human Development Index (HDI) as well as in Human Poverty Index (HPI). In spite of potential in goat and vegetable sub-sectors, productivity remain low in these districts. Private sector service providers are largely absent outside of the district head quarters and towns making it practically impossible for poor households to take advantage of commercial agricultural opportunities. There are weak links with key value chain actors, such as input suppliers, service providers and output buyers. Smallholder farmers are unable to make informed decisions due to lack of information on technology and markets. The Eastern Gangetic Plains is one of the most densely populated, poverty stricken belts in South Asia. Behind this persisting poverty are deeply entrenched social structures of class and caste, with a high incidence of inequitable landlord-tenant relations. This is combined with poor access to irrigation water in the dry season, limited irrigation capacity and low agricultural innovation. The overall aim of the project is to improve the livelihood of woman, marginal and tenant farmers through improved water use and increased dry season agricultural production.
