BRC s Nepal Earthquake recovery programme in partnership with the Nepal Red Cross Society will support 50 communities (reaching around 140 000 people) across the Kathmandu valley in the areas of shelter livelihoods community health and WASH over the next 2 years. It will include training of masons carpenters and home owners in safer building techniques and restoring water supplies; cash grants and skills training to increase the income of families affected by the earthquake and training in community health first aid and psycho-social support.

Two earthquakes in April and May caused massive damage in central Nepal killing 8 856 people destroying 543 000 homes and affecting 5.6 million people. The Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS) launched an immediate relief effort with other 8 000 volunteers taking part. 29 Red Cross and Red Crescent directly supported the response as well as the IFRC and ICRC and in total the RCRC Movement has provided emergency shelter to over 500 000 people water and hygiene to over 500 000 and medical care to over 50 000. BRC launched an appeal for funds on the day of the earthquake and by 01/08/15 has raised 13.1million including a 4.1million from the DEC. Of this 5.9million has been committed to the emergency response efforts including: 1.4million of relief items sent from BRC stocks in Kuala Lumpur and Dubai including tarpaulins mosquito nets blankets and hygiene kits. 3.8million supporting IFRC emergency operations including shelter and cash distributions. Deployment of 11 delegates to be part of FACT the IFRC coordination unit overseeing the operation. Deployment of the Mass Sanitation Emergency Response Unit a four-person team that is providing safe drinking water clean toilets and hand washing facilities in Sindhupalchok the worst-affected district. As thousands struggle in the aftermath of this devastating earthquake we have launched the Nepal Earthquake Appeal.

As the number of COVID-19 cases in Nepal rapidly increased in April and early May, the nation’s public health system quickly reached its limits. Hospital beds are currently in short or supply in health facilities across the country, and facilities are facing critical shortages of life-saving oxygen, other critical medical supplies, and personal protective equipment (PPE). Prospects for rapidly increasing supply have been hampered by the India’s moratorium on exports of critical medical supplies and lockdown measures imposed by the Government of Nepal in the face of the country’s second wave, including a nearly full moratorium on international flights, which has reduced options for transporting medical supplies into the country. In addition to driving a spike in morbidity, the rise in COVID-19 cases in Nepal and in neighboring India, is also expected to have a strong negative impact on the ability of Nepali’s ability to address their basic needs. Within Nepal, GoN lockdown measures imposed on April 29 and currently in force have severally limited the function of markets and transportation of agricultural production and other goods, and disrupted informal economic activities on which a large portion of the population depends. At the same time, migrant workers are returning to Nepal from India having lost their primary source—and in many cases, only source—of income. Caritas Nepal (CN) and Catholic Relief Services (CRS) Nepal expect to support 1-2 under-resourced government or community-funded hospitals in several districts. As supplies are procured, CN/CRS will apply a targeting criteria based on bed occupancy, stock-out of supplies and municipal caseload to target activities to areas most in-need. With the majority of arriving aid currently being focused in the Kathmandu Valley, CN/CRS expects to initially prioritize districts outside the valley. CN/CRS will also distribute home isolation kits and provide awareness raising messages.

This project, led by CAFOD’s partner Catholic Relief Services, aims to meet the immediate needs of vulnerable families and communities affected by the 2015 earthquake in Nepal. This project continues Caritas Nepal's work enabling earthquake-affected communities in 4 earthquake-affected Districts of Nepal - Dolakha, Sindhupalchowk, Sindhuli and Kavrepalanchowk - to rebuild safer and dignified lives. Caritas Nepal will support the families and individuals most affected by the earthquake to rebuild their houses, restore access to safe water and sanitation facilities, restore livelihoods and enhance their resilience to future disasters. Caritas Nepal will use a holistic recovery approach that integrates permanent Shelter, Livelihood, WASH, Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), school construction support and Protection solutions. Their holistic approach will apply community-driven, people-centred, participatory methods for recovery and reconstruction. Caritas Nepal is working with 5 local partners to implement WASH and Livelihoods components in some districts, and is directly implementing the other activities with communities. The project will continue work implemented in 8 locations (VDCs) during the first year of the project. 6 VDCs (Orang, Bulung, Thokarpa, Kalika, Chandenimandan and Balthali) will continue to receive the full package of Shelter support (including housing grants and technical assistance) and WASH, Livelihood, DRR, School Reconstruction and Protection and Psychosocial interventions. In Baseswar and Hariharpurgadhi VDCs all sectors except for shelter will be supported. In 6 new locations to be covered from mid-2017 onwards, Caritas Nepal will provide shelter technical assistance and limited livelihoods support.

This is the DEC phase 2a shelter project with CRS in Gorkha, was initially running for 18 months from November 2015 to April 2017 but was extended to phase 2b and will run until the end of April 2018. Project Development Objective The overall project development objective is to enhance the availability and reliability of transport connectivity for rural communities in the 3 additional highly earthquake affected districts with 33 SNRTP participating districts. SNRTP – Project Components Component A (institutional strengthening and technical assistance): Component A of SNRTP will fund three categories of activities, including: ¿ Institutional strengthening and technical assistance; ¿ Third party monitoring of physical works under Component B of the project; and ¿ An impact study of selected project interventions. Target districts will receive technical assistance from Component A for: ¿ Updating District Transport Master Plans (DTMPs) and Multi-Year Rolling Maintenance Plans (MYRMP); There will be an opportunity for any district in Nepal to receive limited support from Component A in the following specific areas: (i) assistance to develop or update District Transport Master Plans (DTMPs); and (ii) introduction and operationalization of length-person or similar schemes to undertake routine maintenance on rural roads and bridges. 1.4.2 Component B (Civil Works): Component B will support districts to implement physical works needed for (i) upgrading or rehabilitating rural transport infrastructure; and (ii) maintaining rural transport infrastructure. There will be two funding windows within component B as follows: Window 1 will support routine and periodic maintenance of roads and crossing structures using a simplified output-based disbursement approach that ties a portion of payments to the completion of works. Window 1 will support maintenance of all season roads and crossing structures. Access to these funds will depend on a district’s ability to: ¿ Pass the Minimum Conditions; and ¿ Satisfy a basic set of project-specific criteria. Window 1 funding will disburse on the basis of verified physical outputs achieved. This will require compliance with all safeguards and procurement guidelines. SNRTP districts will co-fund a portion of maintenance costs from their own financial resources to complement Window 1 funding. Within Window 1, SNRTP will support districts to operationalize group-based routine length person schemes for routine maintenance with support from the International Labor Organization (ILO). Window 2 will support road upgrading and or rehabilitation) and new crossing structure construction as needed to provide all-weather connectivity. Roads upgrading and new crossing structure construction under Window 2 must be complementary such that access along the integrated road linkage becomes possible year-round. Investments in road upgrading and new crossing structures may occur in parallel. However, Window 2 will not support upgrading for road linkages without supporting crossing structures. Similarly, districts will not receive Window 2 funds for developing new crossing structures on roads that only provide seasonal access. Component C (Market Infrastructure): Component C will fund investments in market related infrastructure along roads that offer all season connectivity to project districts. A key aim of Component C will be to pilot an approach for linking infrastructure investments in rural transport infrastructure with infrastructure investments in locations that provide economic opportunity.
