Development projects in Nepal

Meeting Targets and Maintaining Epidemic Control (TMEC) will help meet or exceed PEPFAR targets for reaching adults, key, and priority populations by finding those who have not yet been identified as positive, linking those who are positive to treatment, and by keeping those on treatment virally suppressed. This mechanism will work with a range of stakeholders to ensure that host government health systems and host countries in general are able to maintain program gains with appropriately decreasing dependence on PEPFAR/USAID. EpiC can support USAID's response to address COVID-19, by preventing, preparing for, responding to, and bolstering health systems to address COVID-19 and re-emergence. Within the scope, EpiC can support Pillar 2 activities, including emergency health response, strengthening global health security in affected countries, and health systems support.

The CORE Group Polio Project (CGPP) began in Ethiopia in November 2001 and has addressed a variety of challenges by reaching hard-to-reach communities with vaccination services and surveillance. As a country at high risk for importation from neighboring conflict-affected Somalia and South Sudan, Ethiopia continues to maintain high immunization rates and excellent surveillance. The country has been free of wild polio virus since January 2014. CGPP-Ethiopia presently collaborates with six international NGOs (CARE Ethiopia, Catholic Relief Services, Save the Children, World Vision Ethiopia, International Rescue Committee and African Medical Research Foundation) and five local NGOs.

Main source of income for people has been work at factories, fields and other temporary work - all of it had to stop. There is a huge amount of people from the Dalit community (untouchables) and they rely on their daily income. People with no citizenship or other paperwork cannot claim support from the government and have no access to food.

Every year hundreds of Nepali children are turned into "paper orphans" just because their parents cannot care for them and work at the same time. One of the only affordable day-care centers in Kathmandu, the Orchid Garden, has the solution to this problem. A safe, affordable place for children to stay and learn while poor parents work to just get that day's meal. Perhaps as many as 60% of Nepal's "orphans" are economic orphans and should not be in institutions, but in day care. (source UNICEF)
