As the world’s most populous region, South Asia also has some of the world’s highest rates of unplanned pregnancies, maternal deaths, unsafe abortions, child marriages and sexual violence. There is also a mismatched demand and supply of sexual, reproductive and maternal health (SRMH) services. Artificial intelligence (AI) tools hold enormous promise for improving public decision-making, increasing productivity and overcoming human resource constraints in public health. However, using these tools carries risks, especially for vulnerable groups in the form of biases arising from the data and models being used and the decisions that they may drive. This project aims to create a research network titled Artificial Intelligence for Sexual and Reproductive Health for South Asia (AI-SAROSH, which translates to “Oh Angel” in Farsi) for identifying, supporting and encouraging cross-learning between multidisciplinary initiatives targeting key issues in SRMH using AI that is ethical, rights-based and inclusive. Expected outcomes include improved understanding of needs, agents, and solutions pathways; strengthened national AI innovation ecosystems in SRMH; and actionable knowledge feeding into policy and practice channels, leading to improved outcomes in SRMH in South Asia. The network will be managed by a consortium between PHC Global, a private limited company in Pakistan, and GTA Foundation, a non-profit based in Nepal. The project is a part of a CAD15.5 million collaborative investment in the Artificial Intelligence for Global Health (AI4GH) initiative.

Micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) face numerous challenges to their development and growth. Given the importance of the MSME sector to Nepal’s economy, the government has implemented numerous innovation support programs to encourage the creation and growth of enterprises. Access to finance, appropriate technology, and training are examples of support services provided by the government and international donors. The government is also relying on these programs to advance social development goals such as reducing poverty and creating employment for youth, women, and marginalized communities. However, there are few robust studies demonstrating what works well and why, and whether the intended beneficiaries are indeed benefiting. This project, led by the Nepal Development Research Institute, will implement a three-prong study that will assess the impact of two innovation support programs and pilot a third intervention to test whether follow-up training can accelerate the growth of MSMEs and promote inclusive innovation. The research will focus on the Micro-enterprise Development Programme for Poverty Alleviation managed by the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies and the Youth and Small Self-employment Fund managed by the YSEF Secretariat. Additionally, the team will develop and implement a training program for firms benefiting from these programs to test the effect of additional training in supporting firm growth. The findings will contribute to both scholarly and public policy debates. Specifically, the team will devise evidence-informed recommendations on how these programs could be improved from an equity, diversity and inclusion perspective and what services benefit micro and small firms on the one hand, and firms with growth potential on the other. This project received Stage 1 funding through the 2020 Evidence for Innovation open competition and a Stage 2 grant in 2022.

Climate change adaptation interventions are commonly designed for current resident populations, and do not account for the mobility and immobility of people, including marginalized populations, who are exposed to climate risks. While migration is a common and often effective risk-spreading adaptation strategy, it is frequently portrayed as a failure to adapt. This project seeks to generate new knowledge on the evaluation of adaptations that involve migration, mobility and immobility across South Asian countries. Researchers will co-create, jointly with action partners, a set of evaluative tools to facilitate inclusive migration as adaptation that meets goals of human well-being and broader climate-resilient development. The research will focus on populations facing planned relocation, immobile and left-behind populations as well as urban migration destinations in Bangladesh, Bhutan, India and Nepal. Research sites will span mountain, coastal, dryland and urban contexts to represent all major dimensions of the mobility spectrum. The project will contribute evidence-based best practices to enable successful adaptations for immobile populations and facilitate safe mobility for populations who aspire to move and integrate into destinations. The project will also strengthen the capacity of a broad range of civil society actors to discuss and promote inclusive and equitable migration as adaptation that preserves the rights and dignity of people on the move. This project is part of the Climate Adaptation and Resilience initiative (CLARE) co-funded by the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office and IDRC. CLARE is a five-year, CAD120-million initiative that aims to enable inclusive and sustainable action to build resilience to climate change and natural hazards for people across Africa and the Asia-Pacific.
