Advocacy Initiative (IR)
International Rivers has played a key role in supporting civil society networks to understand hydro-power and to be better prepared to fight against bad projects, and advocate for their rivers and livelihoods. IR, along with Oxfam, has been key in supporting thedevelopment and operations of the regional Save the Mekong Coalition, and we continue to play a key convening and capacity buildingrole within that network. As a result of our ongoing campaigning to raise awareness in the region about the valueof the Mekong River and the need to protect this vital resource, regional governments have begun to recognize that critical knowledge gaps still remain in understanding dam impacts, and that timely scientific and economic analysis can help influence decision-making in the politicalrealm.
