Hariyo Ban II (Green Forests II) Program

(Nepal): USAID's Hariyo Ban II activity reduces threats to biological diversity and the impacts of climate change within two conservation landscapes: Terai Arc Landscape (TAL) and Chitwan Annapurna Landscape (CHAL) covering 40 percent of Nepal. It applies an integrated landscape perspective to biodiversity conservation and sustainable forests and watersheds management in partnership with community groups in four biodiversity corridors in TAL and three sub-river basins in CHAL that complement policy support at federal, provincial, and local levels. .With FY 2019 funds, Hariyo Ban II will provide technical assistance to improve the management of 200,000 hectares of biodiverse forests and buffer zones surrounding national parks. It will support conservation and enterprise activities benefiting over 10,000 people. USAID will invest in risk reduction activities that build resilience, benefiting about 30,000 people, and will integrate gender equity and social inclusion considerations into the policies of 100 forest user groups. The activity will safeguard biological diversity, combat wildlife crime, and promote judicious use of natural resources, thereby preserving Nepal's long-term economic prospects. .USAID/Nepal awarded the activity to World Wide Fund for Nature because of its technical expertise in managing natural resources development activities and its long established working relationships with host-country government and non-government stakeholders. The activity builds self-reliance and advances key objectives of the U.S. Government's Indo-Pacific Strategy by addressing threats to biodiversity and supporting resilience-building measures. Hariyo Ban II contributes to Embassy Kathmandu's ICS Goal Two: Increase America's prosperity by developing Nepal as a reliable economic partner, and Mission Objective 2.3, Nepal establishes environmentally sustainable practices and demonstrates increased capacity to safeguard natural resources..
