F.a: Protection and Promotion of the Rights of Women Human Rights Defenders

In Nepalese society, women are subject to discrimination, and women human rights defenders statue is not sufficiently recognized, even in the Nepal's human rights movement. Before WOREC's 2006 campaign, women human rights defenders’ status, rights, and t he need for protection in the first place had not been raised. The change has been made, but slowly, which is why women human rights defenders are still harassedin their work. Violence against female human rights defenders and even murders are not uncommon . Perpetrators may be government officers, family members or other members of the community. WOREC has recently been involved in the drafting a legislative initiatives related safety of women human rights defenders. The project's main objective is to stren gthen women human rights defenders in the capacity of human rights, particularly women's rights, promoting and improving the conditions for the work of human rights defenders. The primary target group of the project are especially women human rights defend ers who are involved in WORECin networks and women's groups. In particular, the project takes into account the women who work for Dalits, indigenous, madhesien, the disabled, the Muslims and the victims of violence involved. The project capacitates other b eneficiaries, such as community leaders and communities of men, as well as with national-level advocacy of women's rights. Women’s Rehabilitation Centre WOREC was founded in 1991, is registered as a national NGO, which is working with grassroots actors in Nepal, in order to remove the prevailing economic, social, cultural and human rights injustices and for the promotion of social justice and sustainable living conditions for grassroots communities. http://www.worecnepal.org/
