Nepal Reconstruction Engineering Services (NRES)
(Nepal): In 2015, earthquakes in Nepal damaged more than 8,200 schools and 1,200 health facilities, presenting a monumental reconstruction demand to ensure that the newly built, rebuilt, or retrofitted structures would withstand the next disaster. The Nepal Reconstruction Engineering Services (NRES) activity strengthens the GON's ability to manage reconstruction and independently deliver services, utilize disaster-resilient designs, adopt improved building, health, and safety codes in construction management, and inclusively engage with communities to encourage sustainability. With FY 2020 funding, NRES will continue to oversee the completion of construction of education facilities, and further strengthen the ability of construction workers and architect-engineering firms to meet the country's growing demand for disaster-resilient building techniques by providing online and on-the-job training. NRES designed and USAID constructed public facilities accommodate the needs of people with disabilities, women, and girls. The NRES activity is implemented by CDM International, an engineering and construction firm with a strong track record of effectively managing the construction of public infrastructure projects, integrating government interests, and employing industry best practices. NRES supports Embassy Kathmandu's ICS Goal Three: Exercise American leadership to transform Nepal into a more self-reliant, independent, and resilient partner for the United States and Mission Objective 3.3, Nepal strengthens its ability to mitigate, prepare for, respond to, and recover from shocks and fulfills the U.S. commitment to support the reconstruction of seismically safe public infrastructure damaged in the 2015 earthquakes supporting the GON's goal of meeting reconstruction needs by 2021.
