Support for Education and Science partners to position research for use and move research into action
The core objective of IDRC’s Strategy 2030 on knowledge sharing recognizes that there is more the Centre could do to share knowledge and encourage uptake by specific, segmented audiences and stakeholders. An internal knowledge-translation steering group focused on giving greater priority to moving research into action raised several challenges to supporting knowledge-translation efforts. For example, research that is co-produced with users such as policymakers or community groups takes time and resources to ensure genuine, collaborative research agenda setting and proposal co-design. Another key challenge is that opportunities for research to influence policies, practices, behaviours and/or innovations can be unpredictable and can happen within or outside project timelines, necessitating cumbersome project extension/supplements or even entirely new project proposals for funding. In response, the Centre is making research planning funds available for proposal co-design between researchers and knowledge users and making flexible/responsive funds available for past and/or present grantees to quickly act on unforeseen opportunities. This project will complement the knowledge-translation efforts of grantees that are already embedded in research projects funded by IDRC’s Education and Science program. It will serve as an added layer of support, equipping past, present and future partners with the resources required to position research for use and move research-generated evidence into action.
