Using science-based technology to estimate the population of wild Asian elephants and address conservation challenges of human-elephant conflict in Western Nepal
1) estimate the wild elephant population in the western region of Nepal through non-invasive genetic capture-mark-recapture methodology; 2) assess spatio-temporal movement patterns of problem elephants using satellite collars and monitoring by park staff; and 3) form, train, and equip six Rapid Response Teams composed of park staff to respond to and collect data on HEC incidents. Past FWS support has funded these activities in Eastern and Central Nepal, this project will give Nepalese authorities a systematic and robust data set from across the Terai landscape to base management and policy decisions regarding Asian elephants.
