ICIMOD Water Resources Management in South Asia
The Intergovernmental Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) initiative provides funding for a 'multi-disciplinary river basin resource management programme' targeting the Koshi River Basin, covering parts of China, Nepal, and India. The overall goal is to contribute to inclusive poverty reduction and enhanced resilience to climate change by securing and sustaining freshwater ecosystem services. Australia's contribution will: develop a basin wide knowledge based in a web-based information sharing platform; propose options for improved agriculture in different geo-climatic parts of the basin; and provide detailed case studies of the underlying causes and management options for a range of water hazards. Improving the management of the waters of the Himalayan Rivers is critical to improving the livelihood of more than 500 million of the world's poorest people. The total value of this multi-country initiative is $3.0 million over 4 years, starting 2011-12.
