UPSCALING ELEPHANT CONSERVATION EFFORTS IN CENTRAL AND EASTERN NEPAL
The goal of this project is to work in partnership with the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation (DNPWC) and local communities to ensure the long-term survival and recovery of the wild Asian elephant population of the central and eastern Terai Arc landscape of Nepal. Project objectives are to: (1) strengthen capacity to respond to and minimize human-elephant conflict; and (2) improve tolerance towards wild elephants through behavior change-focused education and outreach programs. Project activities are to: (1) set up a well-equipped seven-person elephant response team (ERT) to monitor individual problem elephants and provide rapid response to human-elephant conflict (HEC) events; (2) form and strengthen 30 community-based rapid response teams (RRTs) in high-HEC villages who will work in coordination with ERTs to provide rapid response to HEC events; (3) develop a landscape-wide database on HEC for DNPWC to inform and improve policies and management actions; (4) train 50 youths as trainers on human-elephant co-existence (HECx) and mobilize them to organize 150 village-level HECx education sessions; (5) produce and broadcast an FM radio program and distribute posters and education materials on elephants and HEC to schools and the public; and (6) conduct a detailed social survey using focus groups and a semi.structured questionnaire to collect baseline information on attitudes of the community towards elephants and HEC mitigation measures.
