Increased access and awareness to safe drinking water and sanitation to dalits and poor households of Mahottari District, Nepal

The purpose of the project is to provide access to clean drinking water or toilets to the 216 households that previously did not have such access. This will provide basic sanitation for the residents of the community, which was previously non-existent. In addition, the awareness of the residents should be raised for the importance of hygiene, especially the regular washing of hands. As concrete measures, 30 hand pipes (connections for clean drinking water) and 30 latrines are to be installed in the community, each of which can be used jointly by seven to eight households. A fund will be set up for the maintenance of the facilities, into which all users will pay a small amount. In addition, to promote hygiene awareness, children's clubs will be established in the affected community to educate children on the use of soap and the importance of hand washing. Hygiene kits containing basic necessities such as soap and toilet brushes will be distributed in public places such as schools and administrative offices.
