Suaahara (Integrated Nutrition Program)

(Nepal): In FY 2014, USAID will support the improvement of the nutritional status of women and children under five years, with an increased emphasis on the '1,000 days period' which is between pregnancy and a child's second birthday. This activity, known as the Suaahara Integrated Nutrition Program, will work in 25 districts using multi-sectorial and community-based nutrition interventions. Likely to expand to an additional 16 districts in 2014, this activity will concentrate on evidence-based, age-appropriate feeding practices such as exclusive breastfeeding, infant and young child feeding, maternal nutrition, essential hygiene actions including safe drinking water and safe disposal of feces, healthy timing and spacing for pregnancy and the dangers of smoking for mothers and their babies. Suaahara also includes a cross-cutting component that aims to increase access to diversified, nutrient-dense food through home-based gardening and poultry farming.
