PAANI
(Nepal): USAID/Nepal's PAANI activity enhances Nepal's ability to manage water resources for its multiple uses and users through improved conservation and management of freshwater biodiversity in 12 priority watersheds of the Karnali, Mahakali, and Rapti river basins in Western Nepal. PAANI will strengthen the resilience of targeted human and ecological communities through increased knowledge of aquatic resources, behavior change, establishment of networks among stakeholders, and improvement of the ability of local communities to manage climate vulnerabilities. PAANI will develop watershed and basin-level plans and use surveys to demonstrate the biodiversity benefits of reduced threats and associated economic gains. It will also set up a long-term funding mechanism for river basin management and innovation for aquatic biodiversity conservation, and produce analyses for hydropower design to minimize impact on aquatic biodiversity. PAANI will support Community Based Anti-Poaching Units for protecting river stretches and aquatic biodiversity and will report illegal activities to the appropriate authorities for action..USAID chose to partner with DAI Global to implement this activity due to its strong technical expertise in managing natural resources development activities. PAANI contributes to the Agency's Indo-Pacific Strategy focus area of Natural Resources Management for a Prosperous Indo-Pacific. PAANI also contributes to Embassy Kathmandu's Integrated Country Strategy Goal Two: Increase America's prosperity by developing Nepal as a reliable economic partner, and Mission Objective 2.3, Nepal establishes environmentally sustainable practices and demonstrates increased capacity to safeguard natural resources..
