Strengthening quality infrastructure for sustainable economic development

Despite a continuous economic growth, Nepal is still one of the least developed countries worldwide and faces high barriers to the participation in international trade. People show expandable trust in the safety of domestically produced goods and food. This project will help Nepali quality infrastructure stakeholders to offer notedly more demand-oriented services. These are elemental for social and economic development, consumer protection and access to international markets. For this purpose, the Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology shall expand their supply of metrological and accreditation services. The Department of Food Technology and Quality Control’s capacity to analyse pesticides shall be enhanced. Private pharmaceutical and dairy associations shall offer more quality assuring services for their members. To achieve this, the project mainly provides training and capacity building. Additionally, measuring instruments for relevant applications will be procured. All users of quality assurance services make up the project’s target group. This includes industrial and trade businesses as well as the public sector. They shall be reached through cooperation with the Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology as well as further public bodies for food control and industry associations. The project primarily operates in Nepal’s capital Kathmandu. Furthermore, decentralised public laboratories and dairies in selected provinces are supported.
