F.a: Establishing the Rights of Marginalized Indigenous Tamang Children through Culturally Sensitive Learning

There are several ethnic groups and indigenous people in Nepal, and the country has internationally committed to improve the rights of indigenous people. The tamang language is part of Tibetan Burman languages, and it’s among the five most spoken languag es in Nepal. Implementing linguistic rights has been a huge challenge for Nepal, in which over 100 languages are spoken and in which structural reforms are still ongoing. Even though time has been reserved for education of both Nepalese and a local languag e, English is often taught instead of a local language due to lack of linguistic knowledge and negative attitudes. The project continues directly from a project previously funded by KIOS. The aim is to promote right to education on one’s mother tongue am ongst children speaking Tamang language. Also the continuation of the project seeks to enhance tamang-speaking children’s cultural and educational rights in schools as well as inform about linguistic and cultural rights to the larger public. Childspace F oundation Nepal was founded in 2003 by democracy and human rights activists belonging in tamang linguistic minority and indigenous population. The organization was originally registered as Helping Society Nepal in 2003, but the name was changed into Childs pace Foundation Nepla in 2011. The organisation’s activities focus especially on improving the status and rights of tamang minority and, on a larger scale, on enhancing the rights of indigenous people and ethnic minorities. www.childspacefoundation.org
