Child Labour-Free Carpets – Deep Due Diligence for Dutch Companies

This project aims to expand and broaden a comprehensive solution to child labour in carpet manufacturing supply chains in India and Nepal, which will, in turn, strengthen corporate due diligence of Dutch retailers and wholesalers in line with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)’s guidelines and recent human rights legislation. According to GoodWeave’s nearly three decades of experience in the carpet sector in South Asia, more than 90% of all child labour cases are identified in subcontracted production, where visibility is scarce and monitoring efforts do not reach informal worksites, enabling child labour to remain undetected.By engaging Dutch companies that source from at-risk hotspots, GoodWeave will establish supply chain transparency, down to the most remote home-based worksites, identify cases of child labour and at-risk children in these hotspots, and build capacity of brands, producers and local partners to address cases through remediation and prevention programmes. Activities include supply chain mapping, inspection and monitoring of both child labour and linked risks, such as wage levels; remediation of identified child labour cases; implementation of child labour prevention programming; and building of replicable examples for corporate conduct to address child labour. Capacity building will be provided to participating brands and in-country producers to ensure strengthened child labour policies and procedures, and verification of their effectiveness. The project also includes company engagement and public communications that promote partner companies as models and tell the stories of former child labourers. This will connect consumers and other market players with the impact that their choices have on maker communities, thus supporting project sustainability. The long-term vision is to strengthen participating companies’ and producers' due diligence in carpet production in India and Nepal to insulate their supply chains from child labour.
